PUMA Reimagines Golf Spikes For New PHANTOMCAT NITRO

Today, PUMA Golf announced its most advanced golf shoe ever.

Introducing the PHANTOMCAT NITRO. Bolstered by PUMA’s responsive NITRO foam and new FLEXSPIKE cleats, the PHANTOMCAT NITRO aims to strike a chord with golfers looking for a comfortable and stable spiked golf shoe.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest (and, hopefully, greatest) from PUMA Golf.

Tech Specs

  • NITRO foam in heel
  • Anatomically shaped last
  • Roomier toe box
  • FLEXSPIKE cleats
  • Leather upper
  • Retail of $180

Reinventing the Wheel (or Cleat)

The real story of PUMA’s new PHANTOMCAT NITRO is the FLEXSPIKE cleats.

Rather than going with something tried and tested, like the SoftSpikes Tour Flex Pro, PUMA bet on themselves and created their own cleat.

And, man, is it interesting.

The idea of the new FLEXSPIKE cleats is simple: increase surface contact with the ground through a series of contact points.

The larger, amoeba-shaped cleats also help to distribute weight evenly, making them more flexible and comfortable when walking.

While I can’t comment on performance yet, color me intrigued by the departure from the norm by PUMA. It will either pay off big or it’ll come back to bite them in the long run.

Smooth and Stable

The PUMA PHANTOMCAT NITRO is bolstered by PUMA’s nitrogen-infused foam, fittingly dubbed “NITRO.”

Found only in the heel, it provides a responsive cushion without feeling overly firm.

My experience with it has been positive. PUMA Golf first used it in last year’s Alphacat NITRO. I found it comfortable, stable and pretty smooth overall.

In addition to the NITRO foam, the PHANTOMCAT NITRO features a TPU outsole to boost the overall stability of the shoes. As is standard, the PHANTOMCAT NITRO comes with a one-year waterproof warranty.

Available Now

Is the new PHANTOMCAT NITRO a winner in PUMA Golf’s growing portfolio of shoes? The jury is still out. But if they manage to marry stellar traction from the new FLEXSPIKE cleats with the comfortable NITRO ride, they may have something worth buying.

You can buy the new PHANTOMCAT NITRO now at PUMA Golf.

Softspikes ‘solved’ this puzzle, Puma’s just refusing to accept reality in hopes of selling a new pair of $200 shoes to suckers every year…

They are definitely cool looking – non-replaceable spikes at that price point is a non-negotiable for many. Will be interesting to see how they stay in the Puma line.

So when they wear out I just throw them away, right? For $180? I’ll pass.

I’m convinced the purpose of many of these spikeless golf shoes is to make it look like you’re not wearing golf shoes.

What they really are is a new twist on spikeless golf shoes. $180 with assured wear-out for any regular golfers.
If you really want spikeless shoes you get much better comfort, traction, lifespan, quality from “hiking” shoes from the likes of Merrell, North Face, Columbia, etc. They are cheaper too. I’ve done this a few pairs now. totally happy, and friends are starting to convert.
Sounds like a good MGS article.

I’m in the same boat as Jimmy…
I like the idea of these new spikes but they’re obviously not replaceable. So how long will they last? 50 rounds, 75 rounds, 100 rounds? My current pair of spiked Biom’s have gone 1/2 a season and I haven’t even had to replace the spikes yet. I’ve had shoes that haave lasted for 2-3 years at about 100 rounds a year, just by changing spikes. I don’t see that happening with any kind of non replaceable spikes, no matter how cool or innovative. Ricky and Justin Suh will just get new ones when they wear out – we have to pay.

I really don’t like the idea of these permanent spikes. Has anyone tried them for long enough to speak to how well they hold up? I know Nike has some options with similarly non-replaceable spikes. I can go through quite a few sets of soft spikes before the shoes are worn out. I know these are harder, but will they last a couple of years?
