Should Luke Kwon Be The Most Hated Man On YouTube Golf?

The past week on YouTube golf has been centered around the Internet Invitational, a six-episode series featuring 48 of the most popular golf personalities on YouTube.

The tournament, run by Barstool Sports and Bob Does Sports, is off to a rousing start as more than five million viewers tuned in for the first episode. The second and third episodes have been released as buzz around the event is strong.

A defining part of that buzz centered around Luke Kwon, the ex-Good Good member who now has his own channel.

Kwon, a good player who has toiled on the Asian Tour, slept in past his 9:30 a.m. tee time during the first episode of the Internet Invitational. By the time he showed up for his two-man scramble match, he was assessed a four-hole penalty that doomed any possibility of a comeback in the nine-hole match.

The format for the first part of the event was two teams of 24 battling it out so Kwon’s mistake ended up being a big blow to his side’s chances. He was arguably the best player on his team and many assumed he would cruise to victory, even with high-handicap partner, PFT Commenter of Pardon My Take fame.

Instead, the Purple team trailed 8-4 in the morning session and watched their afternoon comeback bid fall just short. Kwon won his afternoon match alongside famous NFL coach Jon Gruden, but it was too little, too late.

Kwon showing up late to his tee time was just one part of the issue. Had he profusely apologized for the error (who shows up late for a 9:30 a.m. tee time when you are sleeping in a cabin 100 yards from the first tee?), it likely would have been diffused the situation.

The much bigger problem YouTube golf fans had was that many felt Kwon seemed unapologetic and brash to the point of disrespecting PFT—someone who is highly celebrated in the sports entertainment world—and his other teammates.

This included the day before the match when Kwon insinuated PFT wouldn’t even have to play since they would be using all of Kwon’s shots. It continued when Kwon showed up late the following day and appeared to be making fun of his partner’s game.

A few teammates, like Ryan Whitney of Spittin Chiclets, let Kwon have it.

The reaction has been heated

Rarely, if ever, have we seen a reaction like this in the YouTube golf space.

There has been near unanimous agreement that Kwon was a total idiot, both for sleeping in and following it up with a dismissive attitude. He’s not quite on Brian Kelly level—the former LSU football coach is universally loathed in a way that might bring America back together—but Kwon has been taking attacks from all angles since the video aired last week.

This all led to Kwon finally addressing the situation this week on his own channel, talking for a full 18 minutes about how sorry he was to sleep in and not apologize. He said the chirping towards PFT was normal banter he would have with his buddies.

Should Kwon be the most hated guy on YouTube golf?

It’s totally inexcusable for a grown-ass man to sleep through a 9:30 a.m. tee time and it’s even more inexcusable to be a dick to your own teammate once you do show up.

Even in his apology video, Kwon acts like he is above YouTube golf. This was an event with $1.7 million in purse money so I’m not sure why he feels like it was such a throwaway.

Kwon’s personality is nonchalant and cocky, so that’s just part of his brand. It went a little too far this time, though.

Some will say this was all staged. Maybe it was, but I don’t think Kwon would sign up for everyone hating him like this. It’s not great business for his own channel.

With all of this being said, the Kwon hate has jumped the shark. The message has been received and I’m guessing he feels terrible about what went down.

There are other people in the video who come off just as cocky as Kwon. Roger Steele and DOD King are two examples. I’m not sure why they are getting a free pass for being so brash.

Ultimately, YouTube golf has a reality TV element to it where people are watching if they have some emotional response to characters. This is all a show and an entertaining one at that.

Should Luke Kwon be the biggest villain in the YouTube golf world? Is it someone else?

Should he have slept in? No. Should he have been more apologetic in the aftermath? Of course. To be as negative towards the guy as this article is, is kind of crazy to me. Portnoy saw an opportunity to milk every ounce of content out of a guy JUST missing the tee time (PFT was still playing out hole 1 when Kwon got to the tee box) and ensure that the majority of the negativity going towards someone not named Dave or on the Barstool staff. The Barstool employees found a way to make sure they got the most viewable content from the situation and continued to fan the flames even when all of the non-Barstool people pushed it to the side. Whitney going so hard after Kwon despite being the fakest scratch golfer on Earth definitely didn’t help the average viewer’s perspective on Kwon either. Such a nothing-burger that kinda ruined the Internet Invitational overall, IMO.

Divot Dudes dropped a video yesterday featuring Kwon and Wesley Bryan. The content of the video kind of goes against what Kwon was trying to get across in his apology video….

Portnoy is a bigger dick than Kwon will ever be. I watched Kwon for years and is one of thr nicest guys on YouTube. To put him in the same boat as DOD and steele is outrageous.

OMG they spent so much time on Kwon. It’s edited for god’s sake so they put that much Kwon content in the final film on purpose. It became tedious to listen to the complaints over and over and over. But screw Kwon for missing the tee time. It showed no class or respect for his teammate and team. Whoever that Whitney guy is could have been so much more effective in calling Kwon out if he didn’t behave like such a dick while doing it. Lesson for all of us there.

I want two things from YouTube golf: golf and laughs. Why Portnoy though he needed to go out of his way to manufacture a villain I’ll never understand. And for it to be Kwon of all people? They had plenty of unlikeable characters on hand for that already. DOD, Whitney, honestly most of the boring barstool guys…

Dude, it’s YouTube golf. It’s not like it really matters in the scheme of things. Luke is right – he played REAL professional golf and had to quit due to an accident that nearly killed him. He knows it’s just a lark.

I get it, he was late and let his team down. What is worse is the way Protnoy acted. He made a ruling, then changed it, then went around bragging about it. The dude has such low self-esteem that he had to brag about punishing someone else. Dude, go somewhere else, you’ve ruined the invitational with your behavior.

The tournament would’ve been so much better if everyone related to barstool would’ve been left out.

I think Roger showed more humility. Regardless, Roger and DOD (whom I find grating) were at least good teammates. Kwon, whom I otherwise like, acted as if he didn’t care at all about his teammates until he got called out.

I was more upset with BDS and Barstool than Luke. The concept was very good but the Language was horrific. I turned the sound down and watched it in silence. Not a fan of Barstool but I like BDS personalities without the language. I’m a retired veteran, so I’ve heard my share of language but this was over the top.

yes. I think Luke Quan is an arrogant douche. He played the war with me when he was with a good good even though I like the fact that he is a stick… however. Missing the teatime shows you don’t give a shit. And the other kid was really counting on him. I mean they were playing for $1 million. That’s just showing you’re a douche.

Kwon showed up late and rightly should have been assessed a penalty of not being able to play the first hole. Dave Portnoy ignored the official ruling and made it a four hole penalty. Two things can be true at the same time. Whiney Whit should be just as mad at Dave. One hole and Kwon has a chance to earn a point. Four holes gives him no chance.

Forget the fact that Whit earned his team zero points. A lot of people on Kwon’s team could have checked on him too…

I love Kwon but I don’t think these type of events are a good fit. Even at the Creator Classic he seemed almost embarrassed to win. He just needs to do his thing and leave the circuses and scrambles to the folks who are geared towards that type of content.

It seems to me that the folks that produced/edited the first video went out of their way to villainize Kwon. They spent way too much time on that. And a couple of the golfers were over the top with the f-bomb tirades against him. It is the same manipulation used in all reality shows.

I’ve been a fan of Kwon’s, but he deserved the backlash with his unapologetic attitude. We all mess up(if he was really tired from travel, as he stated in the video, why didn’t he enlist backup from a team mate to wake him?), but I feel he didn’t show any self awareness of how he affected the team of 24 golfers he was a crucial part of. A more remorseful attitude in the moment would have lessened the backlash. That being said, let’s move on and forgive him.

Nah. Leave him alone. I think Kwan is a different dude. And I think he struggles socially. All that being said, I thought it was great drama. And think about plot line for the sequel.

This is the best YouTube golf tournament so far. Way better than the creator classics. Well done Barstool and BDS

Barstool is made up of a bunch a professional writers who have developed into internet personalities/celebrities. It’s their job to spin things and make it buzzworthy. They did just that. Luke totally messed up by accidentally sleeping through his alarm then being his cocky self in the aftermath. Even though everybody else squashed, Portnoy caused a bigger flame with the 4 hole penalty then the rest of team Barstool spread the hate like wildfire. Luke gifted them with this material, and they definitely used it to create a villain character and hype up the event…and it worked. BryanBros confirmed that it wasn’t THAT bad behind the camera.
