PR Disaster For Sun Mountain Raingear

The opening round of the 37th Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, in Newport Wales, got off to a soggy start-we are not talking about the weather. The big story of the day was that U.S. Ryder Cup team ditched their rain suits that were made by Sun Mountain, due to it’s lack of ability to keep players dry. To remedy the situation, U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain, Corey Pavin had officials from the PGA go to the merchandise tent to buy new rain suits

“It didn’t perform the way we would have liked it to perform, so we have remedied that and have some new raingear.” Said Corey Pavin, via @jasonsobel

As reported by Golf.com ,the PGA of America bought as many ProQuip rain suits as they could from the merchandise tent. Spokesman Julius Mason said there was enough to fit only the players and caddies – tan suits for the players, red for the caddies. Said PGA spokesman Julius Mason ” they had Ryder Cup logos, but there was nothing to distinguish this as an American uniform.”

We Meant Water Retaining Not Water Proofing

Biggest complaint by the players is that the rain suits were uncomfortable and weighed them down, because they retain so much water, instead of repel it.

Like we reported earlier, the U.S. Ryder Cup rain suits failed to keep the players dry, resulting in the PGA of America buying new rain gear from the merchandise tent. Here’s the official statement issued from by Sun Mountain:

Sun Mountain has been designing and selling outerwear for more than two decades. We have provided rainwear to 3,000 plus PGA of America Professionals and over 150 tour players, and supplied outerwear to numerous U.S. teams, including the Walker Cup and the 2000 and 2009 Presidents Cup teams. Sun Mountain has staff on the ground at the Ryder Cup working in conjunction with the PGA of America on this issue.

I wonder what issues they are working on in conjunction with the PGA of America?  The irony of all of this is that Sun Mountain’s last tweet from yesterday say’s “Outerwear is out in force with rain during Wednesday’s practice round at the Ryder Cup.”

Perhaps Sun Mountain will play the force majeure card and blame the rain suit failure on the weather. My guess it’s probably a manufacturing defect in the RainFlex fabric. At least I hope so. I’d be curious to know what kind of testing was done with the RainFlex fabric prior to the Ryder Cup?

Um…GORE-TEX Anyone?

I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t a big fan of the rain suits to begin with, which looked liked they belonged at Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, than on a golf course. The biggest error in my opinion was not using a waterproof fabric on the rain suits, like GORE-TEX.  It’s a no brainer that if you are going to play golf in Wales at this time of the year to expect three things: wind, cool temperatures, and rain. Hello! Maybe next time, they’ll consult with the Gorton’s Fisherman for rain suit advice.  Oh wait, they did with the design of the rain  suit bucket hats.

Waterlogged Golf Bags

To make matters worse, we are now hearing complaints from the players that water is getting into the pockets of the Team golf bags as reported by Golf.com’s David Dusek via twitter ” water getting into pockets, stowed towels getting wet, bags getting heavy.” In case you’re wondering te golf bags are made by Belding.

– What do you think? Has Sun Mountain handled this situation properly?

– Are you a big fan of the U.S. Ryder Cup uniforms?

I have a Sun Mountain Rainflex windshirt. I can put it on and put my arm under a running faucet and it repels it. This had to be a manufacturing defect.

I read the Mrs. pavin caused the problem by having the stripes and the player’s names SEWN on to the gear thus causing holes in the material.

At least they didn’t need the gear on Monday. Nice comeback guys. Was SO close. I felt sorry for Hunter Mahan at the press conference. Nobody can say the U.S. plays the Ryder Cup with no emotion ever again!

Heres the odd thing abut this an why I think you saw a company like SunMountain become the official gear provider of the Ryder Cup. I spoke to some of the other companies and they made a good point.

No one wanted like FootJoy or other big apparel companies wanted to mess with this because they were not allowed to have their name put on the gear or be able to sell the gear so they figured there was nothing positive publicity wise that could have come of this only negative. Just like what happened…now ProQuip looks like the great company because they came in to save the day. But if this never would have happened no one would have known that SunMountain even made the gear. And that is why you saw two smaller apparel and bag companies making the gear.

How much would ProQuip have paid to get the US team in their suits??? You can’t buy publicity like that, I think they have just found their advertising campaign for the next few years!!! It rains over here, whether its Scotland, Ireland, England or Wales, especially in October… Sunderland of Scotland, ProQuip or Galvin Green are always the way to go!!!

The fantastic efforts of the US golfers has been let down by the total lack of professionalism by the US team captain. It beggars belief that his wife, the captainess (dear God it’s pitiful), ‘designs’ the gear, hello! Does this seem wrong to anyone?

The rainsuits look more like bad 90’s snowboarding kit. You could fit two players in them they are so baggy, and appear to be as useful as a chocolate teapot. It Wales in October – it rains. Duh!

As for the cardigans, slip on shoes and bellbottoms – oh dear oh dear oh dear. Was Mrs Pavin paid off by Monty perhaps? Certainly the Europeans were laughing out loud.

I read once that Nike took two years to make a rain suit Tiger liked. No wonder he preferred not to wear it, after all he only got slightly more soaking wet than his team mates.

All of my rain gear was bought in Scotland. Sun Mountain will have to answer for the quality of their products; however, I have an earlier SM suit I bought when I was golfing in Michigan. I wore it once.

Yes… the USA looked like a bunch of clowns. You can do a lot with red, whilte, and blue. IMHO it’s all political correctness… let’s feminize these dudes and show the world that we can look good in soft pastels and and warm hues… what are we coming to?

Hats off to Crenshaw and Azinger… nice try Pavin.

First of all: I am German and the european raingear is working properly ;).

But honestly: You don’t have to use GORE-TEX to tailor waterproof raingear. There are many other fabrics out there in the market, that get the job done. I really don’t know, what SM did wrong with their raingear, but GORE is not the only manufacturer for repellend fabrics. I use some winter raingear made by Rukka – no Gore-Tex, but waterproof, windproof and warm.

      Regards,
      Michael

Terrible choices. So far the US team gets worst dressed and worst prepared with leaky suits. Lilac sweater vests and bell bottom slacks, hideous designs on rain suits that for some reason aren’t using Gore-Tex fabric. If Sun Mountain can’t use Gore-Tex then go to someone who can like Zero Restriction. It’s an embarassing situation for all involved in those choices. Anybody notice how poorly tailored the pants are, way too long in the leg with hems dragging on the ground. How can they play their best if they feel like clowns? Why aren’t they styled by a professional and not the captains wife? What are we going to see for the singles matches pink sweaters with high collared black shirts and white pants would be par for the course.

Well what the hell has captin Pavin been doing for the last two years besides looking at sexy pictures of his wife. This should have never been an issue for the US team. Pavin has had his head up his butt since the beginning with wrong player picks and a total lack of leadership. As much as I dislike Monty, he’s out there motivating his team, while Paven stands there with his thumb in is butt saying nothing. “Our players know what to do” says Pavin. Now there’s a motivational approch. The boys should just get on their jets fly home, lick their wounds and call it a day. I just hope our next captin has a pair between his legs.

I am from Scotland however I lived in Dallas for 10 years and I was surprised how loose fitting your clothes are. Look at Tiger, very fit guy yet his trousers(pants) have enough material for a spinnaker on a yacht. Time the USPGA involved European stylists.

I don’t care if these suits deflected water like opposite magnets, they shouldn’t have worn them. Not sure if any of you have ever played roller hockey but these look exactly like the old style roller hockey pants or a 90’s grade school girls soccer team warm up suit.
Sun Mountain has always made quality gear so its not like I would stop buying their bags, jackets, etc…but it is embarrassing.
Also…whats up with the purple sweaters??? Nothing says USA like a lavender cashmere button down sweater vest!
Still fun to watch, GO USA

Outfit designs and tailoring are woefull. Everyone looks like they’re wearing borrowed clothing. . The retro idea is fine in principle but the execution is appalling. Lilac vests that Arnold Palmer would consider frumpy. Saggy grey pullovers with a low crew neck and boarding school shirt collars ? Top that off with the rain suits that made them look like escapees from a highway cleanup detail.

I agree, the rain suits should have been tested. Our team should be prepard for any type of weather. As far as the uniforms….I would like to see our team with classic golf wear uses more Power colors and more Red,White and Blue.

Why does Ryder Cup always bring out the goofiest fashion for the U.S.??

The Euros– who have the reputation for being eccentric– look normal and we always look like a bunch of clowns.

It made no sense at all to send the suits they did. SM should know better. I’m sure they make QUALITY suits, but this definitely was not one of them
