Sun Mountain’s New E-Series Stand Bags: Same DNA, New Identity

If you’re a Sun Mountain golf bag fan, this has been your week, hasn’t it?

On Wednesday, we went wild, wild west with the Sun Mountain x Marruci cowboy-themed limited edition golf bag. Today, we’ll take a look at Sun Mountain’s updated mainstream golf bags, the E-Series.

Longtime Sun Mountain fans might notice a slight nomenclature change. The line used to carry the “Eclipse” moniker. But for this release, Sun Mountain is eclipsing Eclipse and sticking with a single-vowel designation.

I suppose, in the interest of brevity, one letter is better than seven, but I digress. The Eclipse name does live on with the existing Eclipse E-15, a top performer in this year’s MyGolfSpy stand bag test.

These new E-Series bags share the same DNA so let’s take a closer look.

The Sun Mountain E-Series: What’s new?

Sun Mountain says the new E-Series represents the “next generation” in the E- (nee Eclipse) Series of stand bags. The line features three bags ranging from light and straightforward to heavier and more feature laden. According to Sun Mountain, the idea is to give golfers flexibility whether they’re walkers, pushers, riders or some combination thereof.

“Golfers don’t always play the same way,” says Sun Mountain Senior Marketing and Brand Strategy Director Gran Lordan. “They might walk one day and ride the next. We wanted to create a lineup that gives golfers the versatility, comfort, quality and functionality they expect from Sun Mountain.”

As a family, the E-Series stand bags all feature full-length dividers, Sun Mountain’s new Ergonomic Dual Strap System and an internal compression bottom to hold your clubs in place. All three are loaded with pockets including two magnetic, lined pockets for your rangefinder and valuables. There are also stretch internal pockets, an internal key clip and a cooler-lined water bottle compartment.

Let’s rack ‘em and stack ‘em

The baby of the family is the E-2.5. Despite the name, it does not weigh 2.5 pounds. It’s 4.4 pounds. It’s designed with balance for golfers who walk most of their rounds. It features a 7.75-inch, four-way top with full-length dividers and nine pockets.

The E-3.5 is more robust and, according to Sun Mountain, designed for the travelling golfer. It has more storage capacity with 11 pockets and an 8.5-inch, four-way top. It’s heavier, but not by much, coming in at five pounds.

The E-4.5 VLO is big brother in this family. It features a 14-way top with 14 full-length dividers. The E-4.5 VLO has 11 pockets and tips the scales at 5.9 pounds. Sun Mountain says the VLO suffix stands for “VLO technology” but it isn’t clear just what that technology is or what it does, other than to say it “combines stand bag versatility with a secure, cart-friendly fit” and VLO creates a “seamless transition from carrying to a cart without sacrificing performance.”

If that means the legs deploy and retract with minimal fuss and don’t accidentally re-deploy when you strap the bag to a cart, count me in. I wouldn’t call that life-altering technology but it’s useful.

Sun Mountain E-Series bags: Price, availability and what the heck’s a denier?

All three E-Series bags are made from 300D polyester. I went ahead and looked that up so you won’t have to. “300D” stands for 300-denier yarn. Denier is a measure of the yarn’s density and 300-denier polyester provides a nice balance between weight and durability.

You’re welcome.

If you’re into dollar-per-denier value, the Sun Mountain E-2.5 might be your best bet. It sells for $290, just under 97 cents per denier.

The E-3.5 runs $300 or a buck a denier. The E-4.5 VLO is $315 or $1.05 per denier.

(There’s no such thing as dollar-per-denier value. But I had you going for a second, didn’t I?)

The new E-Series golf bags are available now at retail and on the Sun Mountain website.
