TaylorMade Hopes You’ll Bet $500 on Black.

About this time last year, one of the hottest mallets in the marketplace was the TaylorMade Spider Tour X Proto. Everyone was interested in picking up the milled-face Spider X prototype that Scottie Scheffler was experimenting with.

The retail Spider Tour X Proto that TaylorMade sold wasn’t quite the same as the one Scheffler was using on the PGA Tour but it was close enough to promote putter purchases.

In 2024, we saw Scheffler have a huge year with his Spider, albeit one closer to the Spider Tour X stock offering than the milled-face prototype. I’m sure TaylorMade sold a lot of those Spider models as well but the Spider Tour X Proto was still cooler.

It’s back and in black

Just in time for Black Friday, TaylorMade is rereleasing the Spider Tour X Proto. This time, there are a couple of new options. This time around, you can purchase your Spider Tour X Proto with a small slant or L-neck hosel. You can also choose the original gunmetal finish or a completely blacked-out version.

Is your Spider milled or mushy?

Do you prefer a putter with a milled face or do you prefer an insert? We definitely have two camps out there on this issue and they are unlikely to waver from their face preference conviction.

For the record, the correct face style is the one that puts the ball in the hole.

(And is milled metal, obviously.)

Regardless, the best thing about the Spider Tour X Proto is that it lets the milled-face player finally put a Spider into play.

Final thoughts on the TaylorMade Spider Tour X Proto Black putters

I was surprised by this release. The Spider Tour X Proto was a hot putter in November 2023 but it seems like so much has changed in the putter market since then. Case in point: Scheffler switching from his Spider Tour X Proto putter to a version of the Spider Tour X with an insert.

Will golfers still flock to the Spider Tour X Proto like they did last year?

I’m thinking yes. The Spider Tour X Proto in black is a hot-looking version of the Spider. The milled face and murdered-out aesthetic are just the sort of things people look for in a non-retail putter.

Some will want the feel and performance of the milled face while others are attracted to the non-retail look of the Spider Tour X Proto Black. For some, getting both of those things will be worth the $500 price tag.

Nice review but simply changing some colors and adding a substantial cost dollars will make this a niche product. And Zero torque is the way to go.

God’s way of telling you that you have too much money. $500 for a putter? I know for some that 5 bills is “couch cushion” change but isn’t this getting a little ridiculous. Anyway if you but one let us know how it feels. After you have had it for 6 months.

I do no think this will be a great success (by Taylormade standards of course). It is an “aging” design, price is even higher than before.
However the biggest issue, is that the market is focusing on 0 torque putters, these will get most of the attention. All it will take is for one of the top20 (by popularity) to go on a winning spree using a “good looking” design (like Odyssey for the world to flock to them.

Thanks for the putter content, as always! Do you think the milled face is “slower” than the true roll? As someone who routinely jabs the ball several feet past the hole, I’m always looking for a putter that’s slower off the face. Any other recommendations for slow faces?
