TaylorMade Launches Radar-Ready TRK-R Versions Of TP5 And TP5x Golf Balls

With the release of TRK-R versions of its TP5 and TP5x golf balls, TaylorMade has joined Titleist in offering versions of its flagship golf balls optimized to work with radar-based launch monitors in limited-flight environments.

Why TRK-R?

As we’ve discussed before, radar-based launch monitors like Trackman and Flightscope struggle to accurately capture spin rates in limited-flight environments. The problem is exacerbated for higher swing speed players where there’s even less time for the devices that power many indoor fittings to track the golf ball.

TRK-R seeks to resolve, or at least mitigate, the spin rate capture issue.

Embedded silver

While Titleist hasn’t been particularly specific about how it creates the radar reflective mark that makes RCT work, TaylorMade says its approach leverages a small amount of liquid silver laid out in what the company describes as a non-symmetrical infinity pattern.

The reflective markings allow radar-based launch monitors to more accurately capture spin rates. TaylorMade notes that the embedded silver does not impact performance and while not specifically addressed in the information provided by the company, it’s possible the new balls may help fend off werewolves.

The balls are on the USGA list meaning they can be used for tournament play.

The release of TP5 TRK-R balls dovetails with other TaylorMade fitting initiatives like Foresight-ready QI35 SelectFit heads with embedded markers and a fresh approach to shaft fitting based on closure rate.

Pricing and availability

TP5 and TP5x TRK-R golf balls will retail for $64.99 per dozen. You can buy them directly from TaylorMade.com and they are available for fittings at certified TaylorMade fitting locations starting Jan. 23.

Just wanted to say, I’ve had these for about a month now and am wondering if anyone else is having issues with them. I feel like 1 out of every 3 balls I hit on TM4 gives me the italics/bad spin reading.

Never saw this with the two different RCT balls I had from Titleist (AVX/Left Dash).

Wondering if its a bad batch or if anyone else was seeing this.

Make a ball that you can track with your phone. It’ll speed up play and make the game more enjoyable

Hopefully soon, there will be confirmations from the various launch monitor vendors with their confirmation/endorsement of the compatibility before spending money on them.
