TGL Off To Rough Start As Ratings Decline

TGL is two episodes deep into its second campaign but I’m not sure many of you have noticed.

The first episode, airing on a Sunday afternoon on ABC, drew an average of 646,000 viewers. Last season’s opener, which was on ESPN, drew 919,000 on a Tuesday night.

And then the second episode, played on a Friday night on ESPN2, had 354,000 viewers. Last season’s second episode, which had Tiger Woods, drew just over one million.

The viewership numbers for the first two matches of this current season come from Nielsen Big Data + Panel research while last year’s ratings came via panel data only. Basically, the difference is even more drastic than it appears, by about five percent or so.

If you are a TGL defender, you will point out how the first episode of this season (sans Justin Thomas due to injury) went up against an NFL Sunday, a time slot TGL took to get on ABC where a wider audience is available. And the second episode is actually a 17 percent increase compared to last season’s matches broadcast on ESPN2. Having McIlroy instead of Woods explains most of the difference.

When TGL gets a few more episodes down the line, we’ll get a more accurate reading of where the league stands.

But if you are a TGL hater (or just apathetic towards simulator golf), you might say all of this is starting to smell fishy. “Fishy” as in TGL has been poorly marketed and the audience isn’t buying into it.

You might say the novelty of this experiment has already worn off significantly—and the remaining supporters are more influencers (with a stake in the game) rather than the casual golf fan.

Who is right?

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle

It’s a mixed bag for TGL.

Keep in mind the ratings have always been targeting a high-floor, low-ceiling return. ESPN wants inventory for time slots that historically have performed modestly like a random college basketball game on a Tuesday night in January.

Being on ESPN and having a few marquee players involved will likely keep TGL going for as long as its rich backers want to support it.

This is not anything like LIV which has lost hundreds of millions running golf tournaments. TGL has only a fraction of the operating cost and the league is built for fairly modest ratings (and TGL’s ratings are still much higher than LIV’s, regardless).

Having said that, it’s hard to argue that TGL has much hype at the moment.

I didn’t see a single commercial/social media ad for TGL leading up to the first match nor did I notice many people talking about it. I forgot they were starting until I randomly came across the second match.

One common refrain I’ve heard is people are much more likely to watch YouTube golf if they want to consume golf entertainment in this alternative category. It’s more engaging so that’s a fair criticism.

I’ve been middle-of-the-road on TGL. I’ve enjoyed certain moments and Instagram highlights but have struggled to get invested on more than a superficial basis.

I can’t say I’m a TGL hater. It’s kind of a cool concept and I don’t mind watching bits and pieces.

But does it get me fired up? I don’t think so.

If you thought TGL was a tough sell

Earlier this week, it was announced that TGL is adding a second league with LPGA Tour pros. The WTGL will begin next winter.

This feels like a classic “answer to a question nobody was asking” situation.

It’s great the women are getting a platform here. I love that there is more money going into their pockets.

However, why wouldn’t they just be added into the existing TGL league where they have their own teams competing against the men?

That is something I would be more interested in watching.

To be honest, I rarely watch LPGA Tour golf. I don’t know the characters well enough to say I would suddenly be interested in a simulator league with only women golfers. I barely know them well enough to watch the LPGA majors.

This is no knock on women’s golf which is often a better watch than the men. Hand up, it’s my fault for not watching more. I’m just saying it’s going to be hard to rally people around a women-only sim league.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on TGL and WTGL. What do you think?

When the most memorable moment from the entire first season is Kisner blading it out of the bunker and having it ricochet off the pin…. your product probably sucks….

One issue is moving times and dates. One match is evening, another an afternoon. Chasing an event is too annoying. put it on a certain network, at a certain time, on a particular day of the week and let it be.

are we sure the Saudis aren’t backing this behind the scenes? i don’t know any other entity is (or at least should be) dumb enough to back this ill-conceived venture, let alone a spinoff with only LPGA pros for TV money.
no one is watching and no one is going to watch. as many have commented, the only chance you get is having the unique personalities of YouTubers out here, mix-and-match genders/etc of that. there’s no telling how they’ll explode or play, and you can also put all kinds of unique ‘rules’ in play as mentioned in the comments above.

stilted pros trying to force comedy while playing on a simulator (even with creative holes) is beyond the pale boring. no one cares that Horschel can make a 30 foot putt on a fake green for a hammer. lol

I love TGL for three reason’s. Team environment: When do these guys get to be on a team outside of President’s & Ryder Cup’s? Player Access: We get to see these guys between shots and interact together without caddy’s. Shot Clock: TGL has proven that even slow players can function at a high level with shot clocks. Proves the game can speed up without detriment to the outcome of performance.

TGL is a huge waste of time. BORING. The players are dry, uninteresting and overly self-important. You Tube golf is far better. I would watch You Tubers do this rather than Pros just for the entertainment of it. This could be better with some imagination. Get out of the PGA box. Mix players with regular folks. Pull someone from the audience. DO ANYTHING but the current garbage.

I hardly have time to watch regular golf. I certainly have no time to watch simulator golf if I’m going to do anything with the simulator, I’m going to do it myself.

Get rid of the announcers and just mic up the players better. Make it more like youtube golf. Get rid of the Pre-game crap, get rid of the half time recap. Show some banter between the teams, it’s so stale the way it is now.

I don’t watch “television”, especially sports when my teams aren’t playing. SO, I can tell you first hand that I had ZERO knowledge that TGL had even started. I am on social media A LOT (yes, we all are too much), so I can confirm that TGL is very poorly marketed. But that’s Disney for you. Can’t get out of their own way!!!

agree on a separate women’s sim league being dead on arrival. adding them into tgl would be ideal and improve tgl too.

I only watch it through my DVR. I fast forward through all the opening BS and then through all the in-between crap and “halftime.” I do think they need to add wind and rain and other elements to the game as well. Make the guys think about their shot instead of just put the ball down and hit.
Adding the women into the mix with the guys would definitely be better than the WTGL that’s coming. Mix it up with co-ed teams instead of women-only and men-only teams. I think that would help.

Somewhat fun to watch on a DVR recording, hitting the FF button to get through all the BS and commercials. Watching 2 hours “live” is too much for me. They need to bring some wind and rain challenges into play. Including the women into the league might be interesting as well. Female golfers may tune in.

TGL in 30 is the answer. I would tune in/PVR a 30 minute viewing, but 2 hours of guys hitting into a screen is too much

Unless Caitlin Clark tees it up, including woman will have no influence, and definitely no positive influence on ratings. I like women, even love a couple-few, but I’d change the channel if they appeared on my TV.

I WOULD watch, but simply… Not against the NFL or during the social hours. ha. Also, I cut the cable, so I don’t even have access to the platforms it airs on. So I suppose I’m part of the problem. I WANT to watch it, it’s just not in my current hemisphere of access.

It still has better numbers than liv, but is anyone surprised by that? The reality is it would be more fun to play on that sim than watch these guys do it. There should be a mixed teams with the LPGA and see if that drives anymore viewership.

Dont tell the LIV diehards that. They will say that is because LIV has a world audience and those numbers dont show and are not tracked.

I think they need to lean into the gimmick a little bit more, its sim golf its not that serious. A wheel of miss fortune would be great, at any point in the match either off the tee or in the fairway the other team has to spin a wheel with clubs on it and whatever it lands on they have to hit that shot with that club. Add in the elements, at some point you can change wind direction, or add in rain. Add putt bets, “hey if you miss this putt you gotta tee off with “x” club and if you make it we tee off with that club.

I’m here for this…. that would be a blast. I enjoy a good “One club only on this hole?” challenge when at the sim with friends. It’s a hoot. Plus, I want to see pros hitting green side, flop shot 6 irons. Sincerely.

I live on the west coast and the big problem is that whenever I’ve flipped the channel and seen that it’s on, it’s always just ending. The other issue is, that while it’s not a bad product, it’s basically akin to watching people play video games. You watch it, but don’t digest anything. It’s fun, but I don’t see why any fan would care who wins. And if you’re not invested in an outcome, there’s no point in watching until the end.

I’m out. We have a simulator at home and only use it during the winter months when we can’t golf outside because of the snow. I use it for practice and data, I rarely “play” rounds of golf on it because It just isn’t the same to me. And that is my issue with TGL, it’s practice only and not real rounds of golf. I love to watch the PGA and will often have it on the TV on weekends but this format just doesn’t interest me. I would be more interested if they showed more of the data behind the players swings, like club head speed, ball speed, carry numbers, swing path, club face, launch angles, etc. That would give me some sense of how I measure and stack up to these guys (I know, miles behind them but I would still love to see the data! haha). I think that would help me be interested but as a sport or competition… I am just not interested.

I like TGL and watched last season. I don’t like to chase content. Just like the NBA this season, I have to go to NBA.com to find out what network is carrying a game I want to see tonight. I want to know where it is consistently, time slot and channel wise, or I just go find something else. Mixing TGL and WTGL could be of interest.

Totally agree with other comments. The Women should just have been added to existing teams. Sure they can’t drive as far but their approach and short game can match anyone.

As for the TGL generally…it feels like a mess and a missed opportunity.

They’ve started to correct the missed opportunity by adding in some more interesting holes this year, but come on, there’s a lot more scope there. Anyone else remember those fantasy golf hole calendars you got back in the 80s and 90s. Make some of those.

More seriously thought the production is an absolute mess. Some of the onscreen graphics look like they’re being done live in Microsoft Paint, and the audio is a disaster. At time there’s just dead air, but most of the time I can hear the crowd, the music being played into the arena (tinny and annoying), the commentators and multiple golfers on both sides, all at once.

Final point. Why can’t I play the same course the TGL is using at my local TopTracer or Trackman range> Seems like a huge wasted opportunity!
