The $30 Accessory I Never Leave Home Without

One of the most underrated and perhaps underutilized golf accessories actually has nothing at all to do with golf.

I’m convinced that a good water bottle is worth its weight in gold. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent a few years living and golfing in the heat of Arizona … but an insulated water bottle is an absolute must have golf accessory.

There are a few things I look for in a water bottle. It should:

  1. Be able to fit in a cupholder or golf cart
  2. Keep water/ice cold for at least 8 hours
  3. Be easy to drink from and somewhat spillproof

The water bottle that checks all of these boxes for me is the Owala FreeSip. The unique FreeSip top allows you to chug (when you really need to catch up on hydration) or sip through the integrated straw. It’s leakproof and keeps my water (or Diet Coke) cool for hours on end.

When I say I don’t golf without it, I mean it. This sub-$30 water bottle is, for my money, the best you can buy.

Got one same day delivered on Tuesday after reading this article. Found out my roommate has had one for over a year and loves his. My early report: build quality seems great, straw works really well, and its kept water pretty dang cold for upwards of 18 hours. That was just inside the house, so not exactly a stress test but still.

I used to love Owalas but then mine started having a nasty tendency to get moldy within the rubber parts of the lid. Didn’t matter how often or thoroughly I cleaned it. They also dent and scratch super easily so I’d instead spend a bit more and get a Yeti Rambler. Super sturdy bottle that you can even hit someone over the head with when they try to swipe your Scotty Cameron out of your bag!

For the past 2+ years my go-to 24oz insulated water bottle that fits all your conditions is a Hydroflask. I’m in Puerto Rico, so yeah, we got the heat, too…and humidity!
