The 10 Worst Golf Courses In America

You know all about the top courses in the United States. Those are the places revered for their history and design.

The thing is that most of us don’t play those courses. We’re out here grinding on average munis and dog tracks, making do with mediocre conditions.

That’s not to say there aren’t some amazing budget courses out there. Muni golf can be awesome if the course is maintained well. Those facilities represent the heartbeat of our golf population.

But for every decent course, there is another one with dirt for greens. For every beautifully manicured tee box, there is another that is sharply crowned and infested with weeds. For every great pro shop employee, there is another who will laugh in your face while telling you the course is closed.

And some courses are so dilapidated that they are virtually unplayable.

We’re not talking about average conditions—and we’re not even talking about poorly designed golf holes that were apparently built by someone taking hallucinogens.

We’re talking about places that are in such disrepair that it would be foolish to play there.

These are the very worst courses in America.

I scoured the internet for days, searching for the absolute bottom of the barrel, Google reviews that left me speechless.

This, my friends, is what I found.

Like a good train wreck, you can’t take your eyes off these monstrosities.

10. Pelham Bay and Split Rock Golf Courses (Bronx, New York)

I get that you don’t go to the Bronx for great golf, but Pelham Bay and Split Rock takes the experience of playing golf in NYC to a new low.

The golf course itself is fine.

The problem? You can barely even get on the course because of mosquitos.

What the reviewers say:

“Didn’t even make it to the first tee. Swarms of mosquitoes so bad it looked like a horror movie. Half the golfers were retreating like they’d seen a ghost while covered in bites and welts. I asked for a refund since I literally didn’t play, and they said no. Apparently, blood donation is part of the experience. Never again.”

“This was by far the worst round of golf I have ever played. To start, there were so many delays that we teed off almost 20 minutes late. Things only got worse from there. From the first hole, we were absolutely swarmed by mosquitos—any time we touched the grass, they attacked. I was literally eaten alive and came home with hundreds of bites on my arms, legs, and even through my shirt on my back. I can’t believe we had to pay ~$97 for this experience. I will be telling everyone I know to avoid this course. DO NOT PLAY HERE.”

“Worst course ever. Played Friday morning and literally 1000s of mosquitoes. Got over 100 bites in the 1st 2 holes. Had to quit and was told no refunds and needed to talk to gm. I think that’s why they make you prepaid on golf now so that you would have to jump through hoops to get resolution.”

9. Stoneybrook East Golf Club (Orlando, Florida)

Who needs Disney World when you have (checks notes) a golf course with a 2.6 rating?

Not only is it universally hated, but Stoneybrook East is charging golfers $65 to play what their customers agree is barely a golf course.

It might be in slightly better shape than some of the others on this list, but we’re splitting hairs.

What the reviewers say:

“Basically unplayable. Fairways bad, tee boxes bad also. Embarrassed to say I paid $65 to play here this morning.”

“You guys really charged a kid $260 for nine holes cause his other 2 didn’t show up for a foursome. This is the biggest dump of a course I ever seen in my lifetime.”

“Better off burning your money. Bunkers are dirt. Collars on the greens are dirt. Should turn this course into a housing complex.”

8. Blackhawk Golf Club (Pflugerville, Texas)

The term “cow pasture” is thrown around a lot in golf circles. Blackhawk Golf Club just north of Austin might literally be a cow pasture based on the reviews I found.

In addition to the completely unplayable conditions, many reviewers said that the staff is extremely rude.

What the reviewers say:

“I’m down to play anywhere, really am not picky… but this course was essentially unplayable. Could be a fun course if it was even in like 3/10 shape but it’s legitimately a cow pasture.”

“Walked in to check in, and the guy at the front desk–an older man who looked like he’d rather be anywhere else–just muttered ‘It’s closed’ with zero explanation or courtesy. When I politely pointed out that our tee time wasn’t for another hour (thinking maybe the course would reopen after a bit of light rain), all he did was vaguely point outside and repeat ‘It’s closed.’ No call, no email, no cancellation notice through GolfNow. Nothing. Just wasted our time and energy.”

“This is one of the few courses I have ever seen with zero grass on some fairways and greens and then large patches of weeds and rough on others. I have hit shots that should leave the ball right next to the green but the ball gets lost due to all the weeds on the fairways.”

7. Nashboro Golf Club (Nashville, Tennessee)

There is a lot that goes into being a terrible golf course. In my hometown of Nashville, one facility dominates the race to the bottom.

Speaking from personal experience, Nashboro is awful in all aspects. It costs about $70 to play, more than most of the courses on this list. The staff is known to be rude. Tee time delays and a lack of carts are common. It often takes more than five hours to play because tee times are set eight minutes apart. You are not allowed to bring your own water on the course. Oh, and you get charged a 10 percent service fee for using a credit card.

And then there is the course, which is pretty gross on all fronts.

What the reviewers say:

“There was a 20-minute delay on our tee time due to a shortage of carts, and they still charged $25 for someone who was just riding along—not playing. At $75 per round, I expected better conditions, instead we were playing on muddy tee boxes and rough greens. Not worth the price or the hassle.”

“Tees boxes were so bad they had most of the tees in the fairways.”

“This is the worst place to play golf in Nashville. It’s priced as a higher end course but my backyard is better maintained than this place… Syringes were found on several fairways, tee boxes were trash, and greens had the most bizarre bumps and crevices. Sadly, that wasn’t even the worst part. The staff was unbelievably rude and dismissive.”

6. Cliffside Golf Course (Gallipolis, Ohio)

With rampant complaints about a ruthlessly mean owner, private money games that kick the golfing public off the course and conditions that have deteriorated significantly over the years, it doesn’t appear like Cliffside will be winning any awards—except from me declaring them one of the 10 worst golf courses in America.

The course is also, to no surprise, not on any sort of cliff. Hey, it’s Ohio.

What the reviewers say:

“Hitting out of fairways is like hitting out of rough. If you do hit in the rough you might as well forget that ball and take a drop. You spend most of your time here looking for ball out of rough then playing golf. They use to have beautiful white sand bunkers but now they are grass bunkers.”

“I’ve seen cornfields in better condition. The greens are the slowest and bumpiest I have ever putted on, bunkers? There are none. Tee boxes? 1 inch high. Truly one of the most pathetic golf courses I have ever seen.”

“The owner is inconsiderate and rude. If he’s there, get out or suffer the consequences.”

5. Ponkapoag Golf Course (Canton, Massachusetts)

This is such an awful golf course that the great Rick Reilly actually wrote a book about it.

In this case, conditioning is … an issue.

Reviewers are certain that Ponkapoag’s greens are the worst in the country.

No fancy explanation necessary—this course is just a dirt patch.

What the reviewers say:

“This is absolutely not a real golf course. You are putting through sand pits on every green… We got through three holes and turned around because it wasn’t even worth the walk and they told us no refunds even though this place wouldn’t even qualify as a goat track. I wouldn’t play here if I was paid.”

“There were multiple holes with no green. Just a flag in a fairway with a spray painted circle around it.”

“This course is an absolute disgrace to the sport.”

4. Pinetuck Golf Course (Rock Hill, South Carolina)

Located just south of Charlotte, Pinetuck has been fully dismembered by reviewers.

If they aren’t ripping apart the course’s essentially unplayable greens, they are griping about how the golf carts consistently break down.

Harbour Town doesn’t sound so bad anymore.

What the reviewers say:

“The greens are like infields in baseball. There is no fairway, it’s all rough. And there is CONCRETE UNDERNEATH THE TEE BOXES. This place is a danger to public safety as it took our group of three FOUR DIFFERENT CARTS TO PLAY 11 HOLES.”

“I’m convinced the management reviewed every book out there on golf course management and deliberately decided to do exactly the opposite.”

“Their boast of ‘best greens in Charlotte’ was definitely not true. They were so bad in fact, that we had to incorporate a two putt and good rule. Many cart paths were reminiscent of off-road tracks and were very confusing as to where the next hole was. The tee boxes were designated by literal plastic wiffle balls bolted into the ground.”

3. Norwood Country Club (Norwood, Massachusetts)

The only “country club” on this list, Norwood CC receives the most hilarious course reviews in the country.

Do I really need to say anything? Keep in mind it cost over $50 to play here.

What the reviewers say:

“The ranger pointed me in the direction of the first tee, but then just moments later, as I teed it up on what I thought was the tee box, the old fart came running and yelling at me for teeing off from the parking lot. To be honest, I couldn’t even tell the difference from that and the actual grass.”

“Hole 3 has been underwater since the Clinton administration … The pro shop is stocked like a Soviet supermarket, and the staff act like you’re interrupting their nap every time you ask a question.”

“Calling this a ‘Country Club’ is like calling Burger King ‘fine dining.’ Whoever is in charge of this golf course clearly gave up a long time ago. If they put as much effort into embarrassing themselves screaming at their paying customers online as they did on the course, it would look like Augusta. I should have brought a mop and my floaties instead of golf clubs. I will not be returning to this crime scene.”

2. Victoria Golf Course (Carson, California)

This course earned notoriety after appearing in a famous Bob Does Sports video where Bob pranks Joey Coldcuts into playing a course that is almost all dirt.

The video speaks for itself.

This course is just south of Los Angeles, where I think you might be able to find better golf.

It somehow costs upwards of $40 to play here. And if you’re wondering if the condition has improved in the four years since this video came out … yeah, no.

What the reviewers say:

“Nice course if it had grass and wasn’t full of gopher holes.”

“Honestly this might be on of the worst maintained golf courses in the U.S.”

“Worst conditions of any course I’ve ever played… they also do not sell alcohol because they lost their liquor license.”

1. Leo J. Martin Golf Course (Weston, Massachusetts)

This isn’t a great look, Massachusetts public golf. You’re on this list three times. There are 50 states. I’m no math major, but that isn’t ideal.

With an astonishingly low Google rating of 2.7, Leo J. Martin is only considered a golf course because it calls itself one.

The greens are… just fields with weeds and sand? How is anyone playing golf here?

What the reviewers say:

“Cannot call this place a golf course. Greens and tee boxes nonexistent. Some of the holes are just fairway with a flag in the center. Fairways resemble a stony beach. Perfect place to twist an ankle. Wouldn’t play it again for free.”

“Based on the reviews, my expectations were low. And, it was worse than the reviews. The greens were unputtable. No difference between the fairway and the rough. First course that i requested a refund after 18. This was not golf.”

“Whoever runs this place should be behind bars… I’d rather stare at a wall for 4 hours.”

That’s enough from me. What is the worst golf course you’ve ever played?

Let me know in the comments.

After reading this article I played the number one worst course in America after learning it was a short drive from my house. I made a series about it on TikTok, the first video is of the 16th hole and holy shit is this course BAD!

      https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8ABr7eX/

Consider adding the video to the article! The videos is at like 130k views and is pretty high quality. Shows off the greens pretty well.

Intellectually lazy article. Stoneybrook East is far from one of the worst courses in Florida, much less America. Posting a comment from someone who watched Josh Mayer’s two year old YouTube video is lazy journalism. Most importantly, Stoneybrook is in pretty decent shape right now and is by no means a terrible course.

Hopefully the State of Massachusetts will wake up and use the funds at Ponkey better. They just built a new huge cart barn with brand new electric carts to go green. The workers and staff are really nice and work hard with what they are provided. Both courses have great Donald Ross layouts and it’s sad to see how bad Governor Mora Healy has mismanaged both Ponkey and Leo J Martin ,which is even worse than Ponkey. Norwood is built on a peat bog and depending on the time of year it can be in decent shape ,under water or a baked out savannah.Norwood is owned by Sterling Golf Management who have several decent courses in the area. They need to rework several holes to allow for the build mistakes. If you really want to laugh look at the Norwood Google reviews. People make some good points but every negative review is replied to by management and the excuses are hilarious ! It’s obvious that at some point people were posting reviews just to get to see another lame management response. Norwood does offer good junior programs and most employees are ok but there are a few with attitude issues which are never addressed by management who is probably busy replying to the many negative reviews.

Located on the lower west coast of San Francisco Bay, I played there years ago for my daughter’s wedding side event. The course was wonderful and well maintained.
This past May I played there again, and the conditions were unplayable!

brian, been playing Ponky for 25 years. Its a classic layout, course 1 is very difficult. The problem is that it is run by the state. We have a corrupt Governor who spends millions on criminal illegals. It is so sad to play this course and see first hand how utterly neglectful the upkeep of this course is!!!!!!

I know the staff at Norwood are not pleasant, but putting that course “above” Ponky in the rankings is insane. Norwood is perfectly serviceable for a golf course. You’re interacting with staff for 5 minutes. You’re playing golf for 5 hours. That matters.

Aston Oaks in Cincinnati should be up for consideration. $80 for 18 w/cart for a course without a decent fairway. Most greens are destroyed. Such a poor representation of a Jack Nicklaus course.

Packsaddle Ridge, just outside of Harrisonburg VA could easily be on this list. Hit a ball dead in the middle of the fairway? Good luck finding it in the tall grass. How about a shot, hole high, 10 feet from the cup? Good luck putting over the burnouts on nearly every green.

Sean, I agree with James. Nashboro has a good layout, very good greens and challenging. I think you will find the staff at this time better than ever. To say it’s one of the top ten worst courses in the country is wrong. You can do better than this.

I used to play Victoria a lot. The Goodyear blimp depot is next door. The course has always had problems with salt coming up and killing the grass. It was re-designed in the early 2000s by Arnold Palmer Golf. The old design wasn’t really the problem. It was the salt. Playing a course in that condition actually causes game improvement. Being able to hit a good shot off of dirt with any club is a good skill to have. It separates good swings from so-so ones. You have to hit the ball first. There is less room for error. I liked it because of the ease of getting a starting time. To be fair, it looks worse than I remember although that may be due to which holes they showed. The greens and fringes were always OK and the traps were maintained.

Thank you for your feedback. While we always appreciate hearing from guests, we must respectfully disagree with several points raised in your review.

There are over 9,500 public golf courses across the country, and we’re proud to operate 13 of them. To see one of our courses listed among the “top 10 worst” is disheartening, especially when we’ve worked hard to maintain and improve every course we manage.

Additionally, your comment about our newly redesigned driving range being “mediocre” does not align with the overwhelmingly positive feedback we’ve received from our guests. We’ve invested significantly into this project, and it’s become a key feature for many of our players.

In terms of pricing, our rates are quite reasonable, with 18-hole rounds available for less than $50—far below the price you’ve quoted in your review.

We’re also pleased to report that our business is thriving. With over 32,000 rounds played this year, a 25% increase in season pass memberships, and record-breaking revenue from our driving range, we are seeing great success and growth.

While we respect all opinions, we believe your review doesn’t reflect the reality of the experience we offer. We are committed to providing an exceptional golf experience for all our guests, and we hope you’ll consider giving us another chance in the future.

Thank you for your time and feedback.

I don’t know if there is a cure for Mike the owner of Cliffside in Gallipolis and his Napoleon complex but there is a fix for the course he just doesn’t care enough to fix the greens, fairways, or bunkers. The bar is the best part of the course so make sure you pound back a few so when you start losing balls in the clover on the fairways you won’t care.

Used to play often at Stoneybrook East in Orlando back in the 2005-2015 time frame, and it was one of the best courses around back then! One of their sister courses, Eastwood, went downhill fast (like Stoneybrook East) when the owner wanted to close the course and turn it into apartments. Rumor had it, he purposely only had one greenskeeper there, to let the course overgrow. Heard Stoneybrook E had the same fate

My FIL plays at Stoneybrook to this day and even he has said it’s in horrible shape. They won’t even let you play the back 9 anymore, if you want to play 18 then it’s two front nines for you.

Ironically, there is a ‘sister’ course in west Orlando called Stoneybrook West, with a similar restuarant/pro shop (so same developers but not owned by the same people), that has always been in great shape. Sad what’s become of Stoneybrook East.

Jumping on here to comment on the sorry state of Mass state run golf. The city of Boston does a great job with legendary George Wright and above average Devine. The state runs Ponky and Leo J Martin, both Donald Ross gems! It’s sad to see two incredible layouts in such a state. Leo J has had a temp green on 7 for about 5 years now it seems (not joking). The picture is generous as it seems to be the only green with grass. Poor Donald Ross is rolling over. Norwood is near me but after two rounds of boring golf in terrible conditions I have never been back. Norwood CC is next to a swamp and an airport. The course is a swamp in the Spring and yet inexplicably bone dry and brown in the summer.

I have not played any courses in SC or Hilton Head, but truly I believe California has the best Muni courses in the country. I never played on one there that was not in the top 70% of courses I have played, public or private. And they cost less than all these crappy courses. Plus you play year round! Carts are never a problem. I rarely use them, but they always have well maintained carts. NEVER ran out of power on any of them. Only in a deep drought are the fairways a bit brown, but the greens are always well-maintained. Yes, employees can be salty at times, but in general they are respectful.

I grew up playing golf at Ponky as my grandfather lived next door. Sometimes we’d sneak thru a hole in the chain link fence. More often than not we actually did pay. It was a good layout but was always in terrible condition. When your tee shot looked like it was in the fairway you could still lose your ball because it hit a rock and flew off in who knows what direction. In the winter they let us ride snowmobiles on the course. That certainly didn’t help to improve conditions come golf season.

Unfortunately, this is the new environment…..
Golf course managements believe we as individuals are too uncaring and or lazy to play elsewhere.
I live here in central California and the hype is higher green fees for better quality players $75 on up green fees
Public and semi private golf courses all have the same type of dilemmas
Poor golfer management and poor grounds management and the results shine throughout the golf course

The worst golf course in central Ohio is Timberview. We played a tournament there a few years ago. Their tee boxes were dead and instead of sand and seed they threw down small stone shavings. A couple of the holes had flooded 2 weeks before from a creek and we found a dead fish on one of the green fringes. The fairways were mostly crabgrass and the best green was half burnt out. The cups looked like they had been moved all year(why would you when half the grass on the greens was dead). Truly the worst course I have ever played.

I live in the Nashville area and Riverside Golf Links is far worse than Nashboro from a golf course perspective. Just read the Google reviews with pictures. I agree the service and overall experience at Nashboro can be pretty brutal but the course isn’t that bad. Honestly, most of the public golf in the Nashville area is overpriced. The courses are always full for 5 hour weekend rounds, so they will keep overcharging and not improving the courses.

#5 Ponkey – two 18 hole Donald Ross courses and #1 Leo J. Martin is another Donald Ross.

Both facilities are owned / run by Mass Dept of Conservation and Recreation. Basically operated by political hacks that have run both into the ground, literally. Money from the driving ranges and carts can’t be accounted for…ahem, it just vanishes.

Both Ponkey and Leo J Martin have tremendous potential and yep, both are run like you’d expect from the Commonwealth of MA. Total crap.

Ponky’s #2 is actually a pretty nice Donald Ross (mostly) course. Not in pristine condition, to be sure, but not how it’s described in this story. Martin was a pretty typical muni – rough around the edges, but playable. Why can’t all munis be as well-run and -maintained as George Wright – a gem Boston muni?

Sorry to hear about stony brook. Back in the late 90’s early 2000 it was the place to play sad!

      Hi
You need to “evaluate” Camarillo Spring in Camarillo, CA. While I give them props for finally putting some money into the course, it is beyond terrible.

The Tee boxes are not mowed and not level. On more than one hole, we teed off from the fairway near the box where we could find a level spot. Greens can’t be called greens. They are lumpy, bumpy and contain multiple types of grass, or maybe they’re weeds.

The venue could be beautiful, it’s just too bad that they didn’t build a golf course there.

It was built on a landfill, so you can smell the stink almost year round.

Lancaster host golf course Lancaster PA has to be one of the worst. Years ago was a decent course. Bones are there. But haven’t done anything with the sand bunkers in years and years, overgrown with weeds and maple tree saplings. Lose tons of balls because the rough eats them. Pro shop is the old snack shack. Dirty ripped apart carts parked outside under the trees all the time. Attached to Wyndam resort center so extra shameful. Most people don’t even realize it’s open anymore. Just started showing on Google again recently and has a 1.5 rating. Could be busy with just decent maintenance located in a busy tourist area with dozens of hotels amusement parks etc. Wish I could take over and fix it up!

I see a lot of recommendations online and it’s already obvious there are bad eggs online who will only add to your mystery. I can only recommend one and you can reach them via mail on (zattechrecovery ⓐ gmailcom ) if you need help on recovering what you lost to scammers.

I don’t understand Victoria when the green they show in the video looks better than a lot of bad courses and way better than the other courses on this list.

We called it “Chernobyl” when I played there quite a bit 20 years ago when I needed a cheap and not busy place to play. Supposedly built over a landfill and you could smell fumes from ground at times. Grass would not grow in sections allowing for 350 yard drives.

I played there a lot before I moved the San Jose area in 2008. It always had pretty good greens and aprons and the traps were maintained. See my other comment.

As soon as I saw the title of this article, I said out loud that I would put Leo J. Martin on this list…and then nearly died laughing when I saw it actually was! 25 years ago, it was actually in fairly playable shape, but I guess not anymore.

As a Mass native – these are all justifiably reviewed courses (either from personal or second hand experience). I will say, there are some gems of public golf in the state. Munis like Fresh Pond in Cambridge and Robert Lynch in Boston are well maintained and friendly staff – with some good layouts.

I play Ponky often and one thing is for sure you have to love the game to play here.
There is an upside here. You can play 18 holes in 2 hours with a cart. The carts are new this year. Woohoo.
