We can say with very little hesitation that L.A.B. Golf has this limited-edition collaboration stuff down pat.
Earlier this year, we saw a jaw-dropping (and, to be honest, a little head-scratching) limited-edition collab with Uncrustables. You can question the concept but certainly not the execution.
Well, L.A.B. is at it again, this time in support of something a little more worthy than packaged PB&J sandwiches. L.A.B. is teaming up with Golden State Warriors superstar and golf freak Steph Curry to create the Underrated Golf Tour x L.A.B. Golf Limited Edition Collection. L.A.B has created the line to support Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour.
And, like the Uncrustables collab, this one’s kinda badass and worthy of a little examination.
What is the Underrated Golf Tour?
Curry launched the Underrated Golf Tour (UGT) in 2022 to make competitive golf and all of its life lessons more accessible, equitable and inclusive for young players, particularly student-athletes from underrepresented and underserved communities.
Beyond tournaments, the UGT provides young golfers with leadership development, mentorship, exposure to college coaches and the golf industry. Curry says the mission is about “creating access and opening doors for young athletes who might not have seen themselves in this space before.”
Boy and girl junior golfers ages 12 through 18 can participate in Underrated and there is no cost for participating athletes. Space is limited and approved athletes get to play in local qualifiers.
Earlier this year, L.A.B. signed on as the “Official Putter” of the UGT. It supports the tour with on-site fittings and provides custom-built putters for all participants at the five national competitions in the U.S. It also provides putters to the top four European players, two boys and two girls.
Now, let’s get to the limited-edition collection
The Underrated Golf Tour x L.A.B. Golf collection features two limited-edition L.A.B. putters, a VZN.1i and an OZ.1i. Both are tricked out in a custom black, silver and red color scheme with a black stainless-steel insert. Both the TPT shaft and the custom pistol grip feature UGT logos.
The putter comes with a limited-edition headcover, divot tool and ball marker. It all ships in a specially crafted branded box which is itself a keepsake. We saw the Uncrustable’s box over the summer at L.A.B. headquarters and it’s seriously sturdy. I’ve lived in houses that weren’t as well built.
The limited-edition package costs $1,750 and can be ordered directly from the L.A.B. website. You can buy the headcover ($100) and the ball marker/divot tool combo ($35) separately.
Wait. How much?
L.A.B. kind of broke the mold with the Uncrustables limited-edition drop. Those putters ran $2,000 and L.A.B. sold out in days. This offering is a little different, however. L.A.B. is donating a portion of the proceeds to Underrated to support the UGT. As mentioned, the UGT does not charge kids to participate in its program. It also pays travel costs for participants (and a parent or guardian) who qualify for the national events.
If you buy one of these putters, that’s what you’re supporting.
One could, if one was so inclined, consider $1,750 for a putter to support making golf more accessible to underrepresented and underserved communities to be a tad ironic. After all, nothing says “accessible and inclusive” like a $1,750 putter, right?
That conclusion, however, willfully misses the point and borders on being deliberately obtuse.
No one expects the kids to pay $1,750 for this putter. There is, remember, no charge to athletes to participate in UGT. Additionally, L.A.B. Golf’s partnership provides participants with custom putters. This limited-edition collection is purely a fundraising and branding initiative in support of what Curry has created: a successful and beneficial program.
Underrated just last week partnered with Vessel on limited-edition golf bags. It previously partnered with Golf Pride on limited-edition grips.
