Tommy Fleetwood Split With NIKE. What’s Next?

Tommy Fleetwood just finished T-4 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and he looked fantastic doing it, but what was he wearing?? Maybe more importantly, what wasn’t he wearing?

Other than his shoes, no NIKE.

Fleetwood had been with NIKE for the last 16 years. Now, they’ve split. Given what he did to finish last season, NIKE should’ve rolled out the red carpet to keep him. They didn’t.

Here’s what Fleetwood had to say: “Our contract [with NIKE] was ending and it just turned out like we, you know, sort of didn’t end up in a place where I’m wearing NIKE stuff this year. Who knows what’s going to happen in the future.”

Who knows who was really being stubborn. They both had leverage so I could see it going either way.

Regardless, here’s where I think he could end up.

Likeliest destinations

There are a few likely characters in play here. In my head, I’m looking at money, brand fit and general common sense. These guys lead the pack:

adidas — One of the few companies with pockets as deep as NIKE. They’ve diversified their golf look as of late, bringing back some traditional, more relaxed-fit options. He would join Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, Xander Schauffele and a few other stars, but given Schauffele’s slight decline in the past year and Aberg’s plateau, Fleetwood would be their clear No. 1 guy.

I know Morikawa just won. Doesn’t matter. Fleetwood would be their guy.

lululemon — lululemon has already teamed up with a few stars (Max Homa and Min Woo Lee) to make their mark on the PGA Tour. In a practice round for a DP World Tour event in Dubai, Fleetwood was seen rocking some relaxed-fit golf lululemon trousers and a trendy cropped polo.

J.Lindberg — Premium European fashion brand (looking to expand their roster, I hear). Whether Fleetwood goes their way or not, they’d love to get him. This signing would give them two top ~15 guys in Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland. They’re big on the mix of golf and lifestyle which seems to suit Fleetwood. The money could be right here, too.

Not-so-likely (but still possible) destinations

These are the brands I don’t think could put up a competitive offer against NIKE—but, hey, you never know. It’s fun to speculate.

Sun Day Red — Fleetwood is a TaylorMade guy. TaylorMade owns Sun Day Red. Tiger Woods and the Sun Day Red team have indicated that they’re looking to build out an athlete roster of top professionals. Fleetwood is a “top professional.” He is already a TaylorMade club and ball endorser. He would become Sun Day Red’s first big-time pro outside of Tiger.

With TaylorMade’s backing, the money could be right but I’m not so sure about the brand fit.

Malbon — Fleetwood was seen practicing in a Malbon crewneck yesterday, which was supposedly loaned to him by Jason Day. Is Tommy just enjoying free agency, or is this a sign of things to come? Malbon has their guy in Day (who is playing great right now) but Fleetwood would give them an even better chance to get Malbon in front of cameras late on Sunday.

Brand fit could be right, but do they have the money for him? Hard to say.

Students Golf — These guys are under the radar but we’ve seen Fleetwood rock Students during his TGL match with LAGC. I don’t imagine they have the pockets right now to deliver a massive deal but he might be willing to forgo a big check to be a really involved creative brand partner with an emerging golf brand.

Brand fit, good. Common sense, you could argue. Money? I’m not so sure.

So where will Fleetwood sign?

No legitimate rumors right now. All we know is he’s out on NIKE. It seems Fleetwood is enjoying his time as a free agent—donning club logos during tournament play, experimenting with emerging brands like Students. He’s truly in no hurry to link arms with anyone. But my best bet?

adidas.

I think adidas gives him everything he could ask for: face of their golf brand, creative freedom in their partnership, money.

I don’t think Malbon or Students is ready to dish that cash. J.Lindberg could make sense but it just feels a little plain for Fleetwood. Lululemon actually feels like a great fit. I wouldn’t be surprised by that.

Given TaylorMade’s ownership of Sun Day Red, there’s definite chemistry there but they have some intense standards from what I can tell. Not sure Fleetwood would enjoy that move long-term.

What do y’all think? Bad idea to split with NIKE? And where will he go next?

Sun Day Red does not only sponsor Tiger as stated, they debuted with Karl Vilips last year.

Greyson is another brand even Uniqlo as well. I think he would match up with Greyson well.

Nike are a dull brand. Jack of all trades and master of none. They really aren’t anything other than a footwear company. Nothing else they make is remotely impressive.

Why not another sports brand like Under Armour? I realise Puma may only want to go with players who have Cobra in the bag but I think UA would be a great fit. Again, solid move to get more Brits interested in the brand and bigger than a Spieth IMHO so takes over the brand a bit….

UA would be smart to try to snag him. I just feel like UA lacks awareness for the current cultural moment. Stuck a decade in the past. That could just be me though

I’ll throw a flyer out there- with Tommy being one of the primary faces of British golf, how about Burberry. They haven’t had a brand ambassador since Adam Scott. With Burberry’s recent resurgence in streetwear circles, it just might be the right time for them to jump back into golf apparel. And Tommy would look good in the elevated tartans and plaids Burberry is known for. Just a random thought from the fringe…

woooow could be special. very high end, which I think Tommy could enjoy, but maybe a little narrow in scope and presence in golf. Great thought though

Nike clothes are horrendous and always have been. Cheesy and their style ages very poorly, IMHO.
Just about anywhere Tommy goes will be an improvement. I look forward to seeing if he goes somewhere with some creativity and class. We shall see……

Adidas isn’t cool. Sorry. Fleetwood is. Sunday Red is corporate and he’d have potential conflict with his ideas v Tigers.

Lululemon, he might give it a go. They have to match his professionalism to their glamor gym gig. He could take $ and stock and a short contract to see if it works.

He’s Euro. but not staid so No to Lindberg. His appeal needs to be attractive to USA and World. Hard sell.

Stay away from Mabon, too expensive.

Fun article, but you lost me at, “J.Lindberg could make sense but it just feels a little plain for Fleetwood.” JL is a LOT of things, but plain ain’t one of them. If anything, I would think JL is too “out there” for Fleetwood.

I think the way Hovland represents them is a little plain. I’m sure Tommy would take advantage of more of what JL has to offer, so I hear you.

I think they’ve got fantastic stuff. If he goes that direction, I think he could do it better. Fair take Alex!

I like the idea of Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger, sophistication and classy look, very different to the mass market of Nike and the name coincidence with Tommy is a potential cool play! Just a thought. Not a fan of Nike myself anyway, leaving the magic dollar aside.

Tommy H is a big player in F1. Even prior to US’s plunge into F1 with Lewis H. They could be a good fit.

Good for him wherever he ends up but I don’t care. Not buying clothes just because someone who already has more money than he needs is getting paid to publicize a logo. Everyone needs clothes but that’s got little to do with the actual game of golf.

Well. If you’ve played golf as long as I have you will remember the days of cotton polos and heavy khakais – even if you wore shorts sweating into cotton on a 90 degree day was like having a soaked beach towel around you neck – wet heaviness not good. Golf clothing has become another form of equipment- quality and performance matter – logo not so much

Well these guys continue to get paid, and I’m sure the brands can justify it with some numbers. How convincing are the numbers?? Who’s to say? I hear you though.

This comment is part of why everyone loves Tommy. He’s as big a fan as the rest of us. I always try to grab something from a course I play even if it’s just a ball marker. Looking through the closet I’ve got polos from annual trips with the boys, favorites I’ve played over the years, and a windbreaker from a place I worked at years ago. It’s like a wearable scrapbook of triumphs and heartbreaks. And he’s right, some of them have damn cool logos.
“Who knows what’s going to happen in the future. But this is cool. I feel like I’m a big golf fan. I really like golf stuff, so it’s quite nice to be wearing Pebble Beach clothing. I mean, my kids would absolutely love this stuff so I feel pretty lucky to have it on… I do like it. I mean there’s some amazing logos around the world and I also think they’re just like memorable pieces, right, when you come to a special place. My collection’s got a bit bigger, that’s for sure.”

It seems like everyone (if they can afford it) should experience a season of free agency. Wear the stuff you like, wear club gear, experiment with your style a little bit. Love what Tommy’s been able to do

It’s the British way. He’s a northern lad from a working class background.

I don’t know what it is about the majority of US golfers, perhaps the, overly conservative, bible thumping, Republican background, probably grew up rich and from a country club background, but they seem insular, lack banter, humour and camaraderie, but by and large, they just aren’t very likeable.
There’s exceptions such as Billy Horschel, Joel Dahmen etc, but most just don’t seem very personable and also are overly media trained to the point where any personality is simply extinguished.
Would you rather go for a pint with the European Ryder Cup or the US Ryder Cup team? No brainer.
