Happy Birthday, Mr. Trevino!

We don’t typically publish articles on Sundays but, for this putter, we had to make an exception. The new Toulon Small Batch Dallas putter is named after the city its inspiration, Lee Trevino, calls home.

Toulon is releasing the Small Batch Dallas today because it’s Mr. Trevino’s 85th birthday.

If one of my favorite golfers has a big birthday on a Sunday, then Sunday is the perfect day to discuss this putter and celebrate one of golf’s iconic players.

Your definition of golf’s Golden Era?

What do you consider golf’s golden era? That time period that you look back upon as the best time to be a fan of the game. Your response is likely correlated with how old you are.

For me, I’d probably pick the Tiger Woods in his prime era as my favorite but I think the 1970s and ’80s were also very entertaining. As a young kid, I enjoyed watching the larger-than-life personas such as Nicklaus, Weiskopf, Ballesteros, Player, Palmer and, of course, Trevino battle it out on TV.

Of all of those guys, Trevino seemed like the guy who was having the most fun out there. As a kid, that made an impression on me.

A special putter for that guy who was angry at Happy?

For some of you, Lee Trevino, the player, was well before your time. You may only know him from Happy Gilmore cameos. Trevino shaking his head disapprovingly at Happy’s on-course antics was cinematic gold.

The more important historical reference is that Trevino won six majors. Dude was always smiling but he was a stick. When he won the 1984 PGA Championship that this putter commemorates, he was 44 and shot four rounds in the 60s that week.

Not too shabby.

You may have missed watching Trevino live but you can find a bunch of the old television broadcasts on YouTube. Here is a 40 second clip from the 1984 PGA Championship. Search a little and you will find many more highlights.

An old putter design made new

Toulon Small Batch Dallas is a modern interpretation of a classic head design. It started as a PING A-Blade and then grew into a putter with more modern proportions.

Why an A-Blade?

That brings us back to Trevino. In 1984, was in a puttinghe slump. Like a “hitting 18 greens and having 36 putts” slump. For someone known to have a spectacular short game, this was unacceptable and not a recipe for winning tournaments.

The story goes that Trevino’s wife bought him a PING A-Blade in a golf shop for about $50. She picked that putter since two other golfers had already won with the A-Blade that season. The off-the-rack didn’t fit his playing specifications so Trevino bent the putter to fit by standing on it in the parking lot.

Soon after, he used that putter to win the 1984 PGA Championship by four strokes, giving the putter a memorable big kiss after the 72nd hole.

Super Mex Golf

In addition to this putter, there is another way the Toulon and Trevino stories overlap. Golf has become a family business for both families. Sean Toulon runs Toulon Golf with his sons Tony and Preston.

(Joe Toulon is still works for Odyssey and thus found his seating assignment to be at the kids’ table yet again this Thanksgiving.)

Trevino’s son Daniel started the golf apparel business Super Mex Golf, named after one of his father’s old nicknames. The idea behind the brand was to put a modern spin on the designs that Lee Trevino wore during his playing career.

Like some of you, I had never heard of Super Mex Golf. I’m a fan. I love that Trevino sees his logo not only as a nod to his Mexican heritage but also as a symbol for what can be accomplished with hard work.

Some logos are nothing more than brand advertisements. The Super Mex Golf logo stands for something larger and is associated with one of golf’s most charismatic golfers.

Final thoughts on the Toulon Small Batch Dallas

I admit I didn’t really talk much about the actual Toulon Small Batch Dallas putter today. It looks amazing. I love how Toulon tweaked the A-Blade design to make it their own. Truth be told, this is one of my favorite blade shapes, especially with this neck. I’d probably be kissing this one, too, after finishing rounds. The Toulon Dallas is a looker and, as per usual, it is made of Rolex steel.

I suppose the association with Lee Trevino distracted me from the putter itself. He is one of my favorite golfers and I still find his energy and smile inspiring. Can you imagine how great it would be to sit around a fire pit and listen to Trevino tell stories about his 85 years on this planet?

I’d pull up a chair and listen long past when the embers were cool.
