Tour Pros Chase The Newest Gear But Justin Thomas Just Won With A $75 Club from 2015

New golf clubs hit the market every year promising more distance, better forgiveness and tighter dispersion. But, sometimes, even the best players in the world choose to stick with what already works.
Case in point: Justin Thomas just won on the PGA Tour with a $75 fairway wood from 2015 in his bag. Interestingly, it’s not the only “older” club he’s relying on.

Titleist 915 Fd 5-Wood

The older of the two clubs in Thomas’s setup is his Titleist 915 Fd 5-wood, set at 18 degrees with a B3 SureFit hosel setting.

Originally launched in late 2014, the 915 Fd was known for its low spin, penetrating ball flight and a compact, player-friendly head that better players loved.

Today, you can often find a Titleist 915 Fd used for around $75 or less

Titleist TS3 3-Wood

Thomas’s 3-wood isn’t brand-new, either. He plays the Titleist TS3 3-wood at 15 degrees in the A1 SureFit setting paired with a Mitsubishi Tensei AV Raw Blue 85 TX shaft.

The TS3 was released in 2018 and was known for offering players a boost in ball speed and forgiveness compared to previous Titleist models. The TS3 is considered the “better player” option compared to the TS2 offering. It has lower spin and a more compact profile.

A used TS3 is typically around $150.

Older fairway woods are staying in Tour bags

Thomas isn’t the only one hanging onto older fairway woods. Several golf professionals are staying with older models while updating irons, drivers and wedges more frequently. Here are a few other examples we have seen in 2025.

There’s a common thread: Once players find a club they trust, they’re reluctant to swap it out

Final thoughts

Maybe it’s not quite time to swap out your fairway woods? How old are the ones you are playing?

If a Tour pro like Justin Thomas can win with a 10-year-old fairway wood, there’s no reason the rest of us need to feel pressured into buying the newest release. Go for a fitting and see if there’s a genuine reason to upgrade. For some clubs, it may not be worth it.

Still use a TM Rescue 4 utility with a stiff steel shaft from 2009. Also swap in 3W depending on course and it’s TM RBZ Tour 13.5deg from 2011.

Rest of the bag is new-ish (Cobra Ltd X LS driver, Ping i59 irons)

I have Adams OS hybrids from 2007 or 2008 (3,4,5) in the bag and they will stay there until I find something I can hit longer and higher. To me anyway they are the best things I can find for my game.

Why not? If it works for you, go for it. I picked up a like new TS1 driver with a stiff shaft and at 74 yo it works great for me. Woowho. Go for it Justin.

I’ve heard that a few guys still have some Nike Vapor irons in their rotation. Go with what works.
