Rory McIlroy Embarrassed Himself By Stealing Phone From Fan

I’ve defended Rory McIlroy a lot over the years.

He was put in a tough spot with the PGA Tour-LIV saga—even when he has taken 180-degree opinion turns on golf’s divide, I’ve generally accepted that the situation is complicated and his intentions are genuine (relative to his peers, at least). I appreciate that he has been willing to speak his mind and be honest with media.

Having said that, Rory has had a tough week at the Players Championship.

Things got off to an awkward start during his pre-tournament press conference. Rory, who is leading the charge with TGL, basically scoffed at the idea of watching YouTube golf.

“I’m not of that generation,” McIlroy said. “I’d much rather watch this golf tournament on Saturday and Sunday than watch YouTube golf.”

OK, that’s fine. McIlroy is trying to champion a totally unserious entertainment league that is borrowing a lot of concepts from YouTube golf, a platform that is probably growing the game more than Rory is at this point—but I respect that he likes pure competitive golf more.

If I were him, I would have thrown a little more support behind YouTube golf there. But it’s not a big deal.

Then McIlroy gave another uncomfortable but reasonable quote about how he would never play senior tour golf, saying “something has gone terribly wrong” if he’s still competing at that age.

Again, it’s fine. It’s a little weird Rory is giving such a strong quote about hit-and-giggle golf that wouldn’t happen for another 15 years. I’m not sure if he intended this, but it came off a little dismissive—like his golf is more transactional and business-like as opposed to a passion he is following.

Apparently he already knows he won’t be interested in playing fun golf at that age. I have no issue with that. It’s his life.

I just bring that up to show he was clearly in the mindset of letting things rip this week in Florida.

That is a good thing on the whole—but it crossed the line into a real embarrassment during Tuesday’s practice round.

The heckler heard ’round the world

On Tuesday afternoon, McIlroy was teeing off on the daunting 18th hole.

We’re talking about practice here (Allen Iverson voice), so the vibe is chill. McIlroy pulled his tee shot into the water. Not ideal, but it also didn’t count—it’s just a practice round.

This is where the story gets interesting. Standing near the tee was Luke Potter, a University of Texas golfer who had just won a nearby college tournament. Potter is not some random hack. He is the No. 60 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and has legitimate aspirations of playing professional golf.

Potter, standing next to one of his teammates, decided to heckle Rory.

“Just like the 2011 Masters,” Potter said, referencing McIlroy’s painful Sunday meltdown at Augusta.

It was loud enough for McIlroy to hear. And he was definitely offended enough to make a stand.

He walked toward Potter and his teammate, reached his arm across the rope line and said to Potter’s teammate, “Can I see your phone?”

Frozen in shock, the kid let McIlroy take his phone. And away Rory went with the phone.

The kids were escorted off property shortly after that. The phone was returned.

The incident was caught on video, so we have a great view of Rory stealing the phone—I mean, that is what I would call it in that moment, even if it was returned.

That video has now gone viral, even extending into some national news outlets.

Potter later apologized to McIlroy and Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. He has taken a lot of heat for heckling the world’s No. 2 golfer.

“Look, I just made a mistake, and I take ownership for it,” Potter said.

Potter’s college coach, John Fields, told Golf.com that it was an embarrasing moment for his program.

“With regards to our University of Texas program, I mean it’s an embarrassing moment. It is particularly sensitive to me because our program is built on respect for the game, and I would tell you that we coach 18- to 22-year-olds on a normal basis and they don’t always make the right call, and that’s my responsibility as a coach and when they do make a mistake it’s a learning moment.”

For Rory’s part, he has avoided the situation since it happened. After being asked twice in his Thursday interview about taking the phone, McIlroy gave two non-answers and went on his way.

McIlroy is soft as hell

Two things are true at the same time here.

Given his position as an aspiring pro golfer, Potter probably shouldn’t have heckled McIlroy.

It wasn’t a smart move for someone in his position. Would he want to be heckled in a couple of years if he’s a Tour rookie? No. And I’m sure he regrets it.

But I’m looking at this more from Rory’s perspective.

You are a professional athlete who plays golf all over the world. You are 35 years old and have a kid.

You are lauded as a self-aware, well-read, mature person.

It’s baked into professional golf that people are going to say stupid things. These are entertainment events where alcohol is flowing. The entire point of professional golf is to be an interesting product that fans enjoy. Without that element, there is no PGA Tour.

Is it right that people heckle? No, and fans seem to get bolder every year with what they are willing to say. Golf is not played in a football stadium full of white noise where players can barely hear fans in the front row. There should be a baseline of decorum at a tournament.

The heckling isn’t good, but it’s also expected. This is a professional sporting event.

Rory has to be bigger than some young kid shouting a pretty mild heckle at him. This wasn’t even a barb that crossed the line as a personal insult—it’s just the equivalent of saying “you suck” to any professional athlete.

To me, this is a soft move. And I think if you look at Rory’s history, he’s not particularly evolved in the thick skin department.

Rory getting butt-hurt is exponentially more embarrassing than some kid who yelled a stupid comment to make his buddy laugh.

And then he has the opportunity to own up to his mistake after Thursday’s round. Instead, Rory gives a “next question” answer.

Scottie Scheffler literally got arrested for no reason and acted way cooler than this.

What do you think? Let me know below in the comments.

Your calling Mcilroy soft, but your stance on upholding the standards, etiquette, decorum of our game is what is soft. I have no sympathy for Luke Potter, he should no better. This kind of behaviour is infecting the values of our game, there are too many people joining our sport without knowledge of the manner to which the sport is played. Im all for growing the game, increasing the fan base and getting more people playing our great sport but there has to be a line drawn in the sand as to what behaviour is tolerated on a golf course. This was evidenced at the most recent Ryder Cup in New York, absolutely deplorable behaviour, American fans and the PGA should be ashamed of themselves.

You’re way too hard on Rory. He didn’t yell or take a swing at him. If that happened to Tiger in the Steve Williams era, Williams would have taken his phone and slammed it on the ground. Just like he did to a photographer. All he did was “ask” for the phone and he gave it to him. He made his point and the fan later apologized. I think you’re really the one that is butt hurt. Yes the fan has a right to his opinions but should also have understood that “no one” can be expected to just stand there and take it. And for Potter “GROW UP”.

In the disagreement camp also. Aside from the cultural spiral away from just common courtesy and decency we are living through, many spectators seem to believe their mission in life is to judge and yammer away as if they were a multi-major winner. I’m not interested in another spectator’s pedestrian opinion or bro inspired commentary. Regardless of the sport or the event, I’m happy to be entertained by athletes that have committed a significant portion of their lives to compete at the highest level.

Definitely pathetic. I mean it was a practice round, it was relatively light-hearted, and he didn’t scream it in his backswing. I mean can the guy ever look like he’s having an ounce of fun? Maybe he should spend a little more time with guys like Homa and lean into the game a little bit. Tiger or Daly probably would have been like “Oh yeah?” dropped another ball and stuck it to a foot and said “how do you like that?”

It’s just so hard to root for a guy that just seems so miserable all the time on the course. Is it really that wrong to like the guys who seems to have some fun out there with everything else going on around us?

You don’t get to tap on the cage and antagonize the lion until it swipes at you from behind the cage bars. This is real life. These golfers are people. They aren’t there just to amuse you like caged animals. You want to talk shit be prepared for the consequences. We’ve got NBA players going after fans on the exits when they get heckled…meanwhile Rory casually walked up to a dude and took his phone. It was fcking brilliant. Well, hopefully the “kid” learned a lesson, but then again, given what the coach said it sounds like this lesson is something he should already have learned, now he learned it in a more public and harsh way. Good for Rory. Rory has earned his superstar golf status, this kid has yet to do anything – was taking the phone wrong? Not really – what if he had taken a video and was going to send it viral? Doesn’t Rory have rights to his own likeness (this is a rhetorical question). Potter got his phone back, I know it is hard for a 20 year old to live without their phone for 5 minutes, but actually it is possible. One aspect of golf I always appreciated, more than any other sport I have played, is the genteel nature of it – we have golf “etiquette” – there is no “etiquette” in football or basketball. We have rules about keeping the course picked up and tidy and playable for those behind us. Bad fans are the same ones who leave the divots in the greens and don’t replace the fairway turf.

Why are you criticizing Rory for holding the kid accountable. There is heckling, then there is making a personal attack. When past events that people probably don’t want to remember are used as ammunition in attacking one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game, why would you not expect something to happen.
The amateur should have some respect for the game and the players who play it. He doesn’t have the disadvantage of having a career playing a game under the microscope and in public. He would be lucky to every be half as good as Rory. One of the biggest problems of today is people are not held accountable for their words. The kid probably deserved to be punched in the teeth but obviously Rory can’t do that.
Moreover, the guy writing this article has no credibility when calling anyone soft. He’s likely never hit a putt worth anything, let alone millions of dollars. No respect for the author. He has no perspective, no experience and probably should find a different job.

Is it me or does the Golf Channel ignore this complete lack of class from Rory but spend days on Colin Morikawa being honest and and not wanting to be interviewed by the press asking dumb questions about a loss? This is the issue with for the general golfing public (not the Rory, JT,Ricky fanboys), not Colin not talking to the press but the unmitigated bias to the predominantly white privileged Golf Frat Boys Club of the Golf Channel coverage. Colin saying I owe you guys nothing, he is right. The winner needs to be gracious and generous with their time being thankful for the priveliedge. Anyone who losses owes the press nothing. First of all the intention of the press interviewing a person that losses like that is getting details on a car crash, morbid and unethical. The pure evil that is Brandel Chamblee trying to say that we learn so much from interviewing someone right after a devastating loss is bulls*it! We can learn enough the next time they are interviewed. Once again the bias of the Golf Channel is sickening. It’s just like Charles Barkley rant about ESPNs coverage of the Lakers. Probably an unpopular opinion, but Potter got a lesson in humility. Sure, athletes, like McIlroy, wouldn’t get paid what they get paid without the fans. That said, there is a level of decorum in golf that everyone who is calling McIlroy thin skinned over is missing. McIlroy took Potter’s phone over a jibe, some think it’s extreme. That said, Potter handed it to McIlroy, McIlroy didn’t mug him. Potter likely realized he made a mistake and was worried about the consequences when McIlroy walked up to him and confronted him.

McIlroy obviously gave the phone to security to have the Potter disciplined for his actions, and Potter deserved to get confronted. Potter isn’t some ignorant child, he is 22 years old, been competing in golf for years, and is #60 in the WAGR.

I love YouTube golf and I think it’s about time some of the stuffier aspects (like requiring collared shirts on a public course, especially during weekdays) get relaxed. I think these sorts of things are growing the game. Diluting the civility of the game by being disrespectful on the golf course isn’t one of those things. If you make jibes with your friends while you play, awesome, so do I, but we know each other and it’s expected. A lot of people play the game for other reasons, so ruining the game for them with insults that amuse you is thoughtless and rude.

If you bet money on a golfer and they let you down, that’s on you, not them. It doesn’t give you any right to heckle or demean them while they compete or practice. McIlroy wasn’t thin skinned, he held Potter accountable for his actions, especially since Potter is an ambassador for the game.

Thinking you have the right to yell an insult to another golfer, especially as a spectator, is just plain disrespectful. Yelling an insult at someone you aren’t competing against, who has money on the line totally unrelated to you, isn’t needed in the game of golf.

Rory didn’t take Potter’s phone. He took his teammate’s phone. And it wasn’t harmless. He tried multiple times to enter the phone, presumably to delete the video, but was locked out. That is indefensible. Sorry, but there is no excuse for Rory’s actions in this instance.

      Sorry, I forgot to add:
He turned Pro when he was 18.
He never went to “college” as one would say in the US, he didn’t do those programmes, didn’t do such curriculums, didn’t associate himself with such teams, and certainly none of that type of “education” – all he read was a bit of stuff during his Nor’n Irish high school days, when he was mostly playing golf!!! What did he read???? Probably nothing!!!!
And all he’s ever had was his inner circle – his father, his mum, his caddies, his sponsors and business manager like Chubby Chandler.
That’s it!!!! He’s been on his “lone” journey just playing golf, he never got himself read!!!
He’s just an athlete jock type without a brain, even though it’s golf, he’s still that dumb sports athlete jock type. He doesn’t know what it’s like to be in the “real world” he’s been protected from all that for all his life pretty much.

Rory is a spoilt little rich kid. Spoilt. Used to getting his own way. He also bad mouths other golfers on how they earn a living. If he’d have taken my phone I’d have jumped the ropes and tackled him, then called the police. He can’t stop running his mouth but has nothing to say. Take all his interviews and condense to a message. You’re left with nothing other than his hatred of golfers. Don’t listen to him. He may be good at golf, but that’s it. Spoilt little rich kid.

We should be sporting Rory. Anyone who follows the game and sport should know the value he adds. He is far from spoiled and has earned his place as a world champion golfer. As a spectator at tournaments, and someone who just attended the API at Bay Hill, I witnessed the disrespect of people and what golfers listen to. More people should be removed. The gallery is lucky to be allowed to stand feet from these golfers, and they show their respect and support with stupidity. That college golfer should have known better. Although he made a mistake, he should be forgiven, but there are consequences. … I’m sad for those replying with comments against Rory. It’s ridiculous to say you’d tackle him if he took your phone. Give me a break. We talk about bullying in this world, and here’s a collegiate golfer who’s lucky enough to be at a tournament with champion golfers .. as yourself what example he set? All Rory did was ask the young man for his phone and call away.. some of these people are acting like Rory did something criminal..
      He WAS the bigger person.
Thank you Rory! It is always a pleasure to watch you golf. Last week at Bay Hill he was one of the golfers on pro-am day that was walking and talking with his group. Others were not doing that. Before we find it SO easy to make comments, let’s step back and think for a minute.

“YOU ARE A LAUDED AS A SELF-AWARE, MATURE, WELL-READ PERSON”
      – no, he is NOT.
He is JUST A GOLFER. An ATHLETE, in SPORTS.
He is not anything else, not even a SALESPERSON. All he’s ever done is hit a golf ball. NOTHING ELSE.
Just like any other Professional Athlete in any big world-wide sport – whether it be football (soccer), tennis, or whatever-
these athletes should NEVER be considered SELF-AWARE, MATURE, WELL-READ PERSON – they just play sports.
Being heckled is part of the game, sure, and reacting this way was totally justified. If that was an MMA fighter, a boxer – I am sure the “athlete” would have run into the crowd to pummel the guy.
      However –
YOU, Sean, are the one who is supposed to be mature, and well-read, as a writer, a professional writer, who uses observational skills and knowledge of vocabulary and writing to earn a living, to expound on matters of the subjects interests –
and this is a biased, prejudiced, twisted, demented, and an utterly mistaken take on the subject.
If, and when, Rors decide to hang up playing and take up Captain positions and become officers in a company or club or association to run such things and runs them well – then we might say at that point, once he has gained success in them with his verbiage and actions, we may say he is SELF-AWARE, MATURE, WELL-READ PERSON.
Not now. He’s just a guy who hits balls.
However, that Potter kid – totally won’t be able to live this down. He F’ed up royally.

That being said, Rory is an interesting guy. As great as he is, and he is great, it’s beginning to feel like history will remember him for other stuff. “Only” winning four (or how he ends up getting) majors. The drought. Divorcegate. Amanda? LIV martyr. That time he “stole” a kid’s phone over something so small. It’s like Rory can’t seem to get out of his own way and just be an elite golfer.

I think it’ll make people like this think twice before they act like this on the course. At the end of the day, no matter who they are, Rory is a lot better than them and will obliterate them in a 1 on 1 contest, and even the best make mistakes so STFU and enjoy the golf. You don’t need to be a smartass.

This is really not a BIGGIE except for the hyper-sensitive reaction made by Rory McIlroy! Luke said exactly what I would have thought after Rory duck-hooked a shot way left into the water on 18. Potter was just being funny and only said “Just like the 2011 Masters!” Played TPC about 10 times and never hit it in the water off the tee on 18? And it is all a big ‘so-what’ as Rory should just grow-up, block-it-out, play the course with composure and maybe a MAJOR will come his way after 11 years!??!

Rory and other PGA tour players help out these content creators by going on there channels…PGA players are a big part of there existence. YT content creators honestly have a fairly easy job and make a lot of residual income off limted skill in their ownright. I would imagine many off them wsnted to be professional golfers but were likely not good enough. I’d rather watch a skilled golfer like Rory vs a YT content creator. In term of the kid heckling Rory…he is a kid..but s kid with bad manners and a lack of respect for one of the greats. Glad Rory did what he did. Here’s my problem with your assessment. If Rory hadn’t reacted that strongly, nothing would have been done about the kid’s asshole behavior. He would have continued going through his life thinking it was perfectly OK being an asshole. And as someone who aspires to be one of the guys he just heckled, he really ought to know better. And now, hopefully he does.

I reject the viewpoint that “it comes with the territory”. Just because the behavior is common doesn’t make it less dick-headed. The only reason it is as prevalent as it is, is the difficulty of policing it. Not impossible mind you – do you think this kid would have dared to say this at Augusta National and risked being banned for life? I personally wish they WOULD try to police it better. And put not just hecklers, but any moron trying to time his scream of “Mashed potatoes!” or “Ba-ba-booey!” or or “Go in the hole!” (this last on a par 5 tee shot) just after impact, into stocks at the entrance of the course as a warning to other morons.

I don’t get your “Entitled much?” comment. I still maintain this is not a freedom of speech issue. If you want to argue that the kid had the right to say what he did, that’s a different argument. And my counter argument would be that his attendance is probably subject to certain conditions imposed by the owners of the venue, who could eject him from the premises if they wanted to.

The message here is wrong. An aspiring professional golfer should know better than to heckle the #2. In a game that is steeped in decorum, and tradition. The kid here is wrong, and received the correct punishment. However, he is only sorry because he got caught. The argument that Rory should just brush it off only creates a precedent for additional bad behavior. It is simple, keep your mouth shut and watch some golf. FAFO.

“a game that is steeped in decorum, and tradition.” Yeah, invented by a bunch of bored, drunk Scottish noblemen who had serfs working themselves to death to serve their masters. It’s just like when the morons on the Golf Channel prattle on about a golf course being “hallowed ground”. Hallowed ground is Gettysburg, Antietam, Iowa Jima, Pearl Harbor, etc. Not some tract of land where a a game of hitting a little ball into a hole is played. And BTW, I play over 70 rounds a year, but it’s not a religion, just a diversion from the reality of life.

this was a pathetic display to be so offended by something so mild (and a 14 year old reference!) that you walk up and literally steal the kid’s phone.
that is inexcusable. Rory should be going out of his way to apologize to Potter.
it’s no wonder people mock golfers for needing it to be completely quiet to hit a golf ball. every other sport players must perform at their peak under unbelievable strain and stress and noise, and a professional golfer (unlike the rest of us) just can’t hit a ball even if a bird chirps in his/her backswing? come on. grow up, Rory.

So Rory has won 27 times on the PGA tour and you are saying he has soft skin.
Obviously you have never felt the heat coming down the stretch to win a PGA tournament, or a Major for that matter.
Neither have I but I have in competitive amateur and senior amateur tournament, and guess what, it isn’t for the faint of heart. Believe me you have to “man up” at some point…
You are calling a future hall of fame golfer soft, not even close. As for the kid with the cell phone, no one knows “exactly” what and how long the kid was heckling Rory and we don’t know if it was disrupting just Rory or everyone in the group. I agree. If the golfers can’t take the bad part of the crowds, then they should not compete in high profile events. The kid didn’t do anything profane or inappropriate; he absolutely shouldn’t not have been removed. McIlroy (whom I like) should be fined by the tour. He should be the one apologizing to the commissioner.

I’ll also throw in his multiple exchanges with Robby Berger of Bob Does Sports. Rory seems to have a problem with the power of YouTube golf and can’t seem to give an answer without any amount of contempt. Not sure why Bob is the most frequent target because he’s such a likeable guy. A little much at times, but likeable.
