What’s in Your Bag? Random WITB of the Week

Perhaps one of the most interesting things about golf is that no two golfers are alike, and thus, neither are their bags.

Each week we’re going to highlight a random WITB from the MyGolfSpy Forum, for no reason other than curiosity. It’s always good to see what other golfers are playing. Have a WITB you’d like to share? Head over to the forum.

In the meantime, buckle up and take in our first submission, courtesy of Rob Person

Rob’s Comments:

Having gone through a number of changes in the last few months,  I’m happy to say that not a single club is the same as when I started playing a few years ago.

Through both testing opportunities, and with the help of fellow spies knowledge, it has been fantastic to play with these clubs!  I’ve seen great gains in both my on course management and scoring!

Would you game this bag? Drop a comment down below and let me know if you would PLAY or TRADE.

Gotta play it! Rob knows what he’s doing and if it made it into his bag I would definitely play 18 with it

Whoa! Thanks for the first article feature !
I may be biased, but I definitely am playing these! 😆 🤣 😂
The next step for me is either shaft changes to the drivee/woods, or a complete top end overhaul.

Cobra RadSpeed XB 10.5 Driver set to +1, Mitsubishi Diamana ZF SR-flex
Cobra F9 14.5 FW set to +1.5, Mitsubishi Diamana RF R-flex
Cobra King Tec 3H (2021 version), Xcaliber Rapid Taper RTI75 R-flex
Cobra King Utility 4 iron (2020 version), Xcaliber Rapid Taper RTI75 R-flex
      Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal 5i – GW, Nippon 950GH Neo R-flex
      Mizuno S23 SW (54 S-grind), Nippon Pro Modus 3 105 Wedge flex
Callaway JAWS Raw LW (60 Z-grind), TT DG 115 Spinner Wedge flex
      Evnroll ER2 putter w/Gravity grip

tl;dr version: My current bag is as set as it ever gets. I am a confirmed shaft ‘ho’, and will try any reasonably priced shaft that I think has a chance of fitting my swing. That said, I really like the Diamana ZF.

      Long version:

I’ve been playing Cobra drivers and woods for a long time. I started with a BioCell driver which I hit slightly better than the Ping that was out at the same time. Bought it during the following off season, when the price dropped way down (I paid $134 for it on Amazon, brand new with free shipping). I’ve stuck with Cobra because all the shafts I’ve accumulated over the years fit without changing the tips, and the prices on Cobra woods drop sooner and faster than any of the other big names. I moved to an F9 with an Evenflow Blue shaft, which I played for several years. I picked up the RadSpeed XB head early this year, partly because the seller (ProClubs) measured it as matching the stated loft, and I always wondered whether the drivers I’ve played were anywhere near their stated loft. Then I switched to the Diamana ZF when I found them for $70.

The FW just went back into my bag recently. I struggled with my FW woods for the past few years, but I’ve fixed some swing flaws which made it a useful club again. The Diamana RF (also $70) is a new addition, and works well in this setup.

The hybrid and utility are both go to clubs for me for long approaches and recoveries from mishit tee shots. The Rapid Taper shafts are rocket launchers. I think their R-flex plays a bit firm. Interestingly, the 3H hits low bullets while the 4i hits high but piercing shots. I will use either of these off the tee on shorter holes where the penalty for an offline drive is severe.

The irons were not a planned purchase. I had been playing Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Forged irons with Nippon 950GH stiff shafts for 9 years. I had bought that set specifically because they were the only irons that came stock with those shafts. They were the only shafts I tried (vs TT DGs, Project Xs and even KBS Tours) that felt like they were working for me, and not the other way around. Last year, I went to what was supposed to be a demo day session for the Mizuno S23 wedge, only to find they didn’t have the shaft I wanted to try. So the fitter had me hit a JPX 923 7 iron to try to figure out what shaft I should be hitting. When I tried the 950GH Neos in R-flex, I remembered how easy it was to launch the Nikes when I first got them 9 years before, and I got the same feeling with the new shafts. I’m about to turn 71 years old, so I was 69 at the time, and I realized it was time to move down to R-flex. The new irons have given me back a lot of the distance and trajectory I had lost over the years, and I don’t feel like I’m working as hard as I had been to load the stiff shafts in my old set.

The S23 SW is the club I’d wanted to try at the demo day last year when I ended up buying the JPX 923s. I realized that I hit a lot of full sand wedge approaches (it’s my 100 yd club) and I might be better off with a more forgiving club (vs a “players” SW), and it’s probably as good out of the bunkers I typically play. I just made the change, so we’ll see.

The JAWS Z-grind LW gives me a low bounce option around the green and out of firm bunkers. Along with the S-grind SW I get the versatility I need.

The Evnroll ER2 putter was purchased right when it was introduced, without my ever having seen one in person (I figured I could always return it). I just liked the look of the wide Anser-style. It was by far the most expensive putter I’d ever bought (in fact, the most expensive single club), and I’ve never regretted buying it. I was immediately comfortable with the look and alignment at address, the way it swings and the feel at impact. I can’t imagine that it’ll ever leave my bag.

If you enjoy the game, time for an upgrade. Newer clubs are advanced.
