Why McIlroy Deserves Player Of The Year Honors Over Scheffler

Voting for the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year award is now open.

Did any of you play in at least 15 official FedExCup events during the 2025 season? If so, get out your phone and vote before Dec. 12 when the poll closes.

Your choices are Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Ben Griffin—although only Scheffler and McIlroy stand a realistic chance of winning.

Before you vote, would you mind listening to my pitch for McIlroy?

Ah, yes. MGS readers might assume that I would prefer world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to win the award for the fourth consecutive season (jeez, Scottie, take it easy on everyone).

McIlroy isn’t among my favorite players given recent antics and Scheffler did win six times this year.

Usually when you win two majors like Scheffler did, the vote is a forgone conclusion.

Maybe it still is—but I’m actually vouching for McIlroy this time around.

Let’s do a little resume comparison

By the raw numbers, I will admit Scheffler was better than McIlroy in most categories this season.

Keep in mind this is only based on Tour competition so the Ryder Cup doesn’t technically count in this particular vote (although there are other POTY awards given out that do consider it).

If it did count, McIlroy’s 3-1-1 record would easily trump Scheffler’s 1-4-0 mark (although Scheffler did beat McIlroy in singles, which cuts into that deficit slightly).

Players ChampionshipWin T20
MastersWin4th
PGA ChampionshipT47Win
U.S. OpenT19T7
Open ChampionshipT7Win

For what it’s worth, Scheffler was T4 in the final FedEx Cup standings while McIlroy was T23.

Scheffler didn’t capture any wins until May—his year got off to a slow start because of a freak injury involving ravioli—but then he started cooking.

His six wins were the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, PGA Championship, Memorial Tournament, The Open Championship, BMW Championship and Procore Championship.

McIlroy’s three wins were the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the Players Championship and the Masters.

As a point of pure consistency, Scheffler clearly had the better of play.

So why am I arguing that McIlroy should win Player of the Year?

This is a very straightforward argument. It won’t be enough for some people.

McIlroy won the Masters, capturing his white whale and becoming just the sixth player in history to win the career Grand Slam.

That win is clearly the story of the year in golf. It’s one of the stories of the year in sports.

To me, it’s a trump card over anything else.

If that was McIlroy’s only win on the season, then maybe it wouldn’t have the power to overcome Scheffler’s resume.

But McIlroy’s three victories are nearly equivalent to Scheffler’s six wins, even without considering the historic implications of his Masters win.

He won a signature event at Pebble Beach and then the Players Championship, which has arguably the best field in golf, prior to getting the green jacket.

Two of Scheffler’s six wins came at lower-tier events with mediocre fields. McIlroy didn’t play in either of them.

So it ultimately feels more like two majors and two signature event wins (Scheffler) versus one major and two signature event wins (McIlroy).

I know the Ryder Cup doesn’t count for this vote but consider that McIlroy accomplished the only two meaningful goals he really had left as a player: to win the Masters and win an away Ryder Cup.

He rose to the occasion for both of those. Ultimately, I think the Masters alone is enough.

This award is not exactly the Cy Young in baseball. Nobody really cares that much about who wins.

It’s still a fun debate to have.

I am going against the grain here but I’m on Team McIlroy for PGA Tour Player of the Year.

So Sean is a God hater and although Scotty won more and had a lower scoring average he wants Rory to win. I thought POTY was about golf not religious discrimination

POY is Scottie Scheffler and It’s not even close. Congrats to Rory on completing the career grand slam, but there is zero joy in watching him and his childish interviews and pouting in the media. The greatest are compared by majors and for Scheffler to have 2 wins, a 4th and 7th is incredible. This is player of the year, not career slam of the year. Looking forward to watching Scottie dominate again in 2026.

I thought the player of the year award was just that, player of the year, not lifetime achievement award. Scheffler had the better individual season, Rory reached a career milestone with the grand slam. That would be like giving LeBron MVP in 2023 for passing Kareem even though Embiid had the better season.

What do you mean “Rory’s recent antics”?

      I don’t buy that “logic”.
At least he has something about him, something most of the US players don’t.
Although even Patrick Reed had something about him. He engendered an emotion, unlike Scheffler who I’d rather listen to my hair grow than watch.
There are just far too many dull players on the PGA who have no charisma, personality or get up and go, they are Kier Starmers.

If you break scoring average down by rounds. Who was best in round 1, round 2, etc… Scottie Sheffler led the tour in scoring for every round. Over the last 40 years the only other player to do that was Tiger in 2000. He was 77% better in strokes gained. He only had one tournament where he finished under 2.0 strokes gained for the tournament. One out of 21 tournaments. Rory finished under 2.0 strokes gained for a tournament 7 times out the 22 tournaments he played.

In majors + Players + Tour Championship, the strokes gained versus the field.
      Scottie: 2.1, 3.3, 4.4, 3.1, 4.6, 2.6
      Rory: 4.1, 4.1, 0.9, 2.3, 2.8, 0.6

Scottie had a better major season and was more consistent. His worst finish of the year was T25th. He was in the top 10 (including wins) in the last 16 of the 21 tournaments he played in and finished in the top 5 (including wins) 12 times. Rory’s worst finish was a missed cut. He finished outside the top 25 3 times. He finished in the top 10 (including wins) 12 times and finished in the top 5 (including wins) 9 times.

I don’t even think it is even close. Scottie had the better year in every way possible. If you want to romanticize it by giving to the guy who finally got the monkey off his back would be a disservice to how good Scottie was this year.

Scheffler is the most boring #1 in any sport on the planet.
He might well be an effective player, but he brings nothing to the spectating element and zero entertainment value to golf. He sucks the joy out of the game.
He’s as boring on the course as he is off it. The Pete Sampras of golf. Hopefully he retires to be a full time Christian soon and he can bore the pews to death.

Nothing to do with that, but no one wants a dull and dreary bible thumper as world number one on or off the course. There’s nothing more pointless than a gullible US evangelist thanking his imaginary friend when he wins again. I wonder why he bothers practicing if his fairy tale helped him?

He just as no redeeming qualities at all which make you want to watch him at all. A real snoozefest and the most boring #1 we have had in the game for decades.

Dude are you okay? I get it if your personal beliefs don’t align with his but going on a 3 paragraph diatribe about that being the reason you don’t like him is weird. Also if you think he’s a “snoozefest” on the course then I don’t know what you want to see. Just watch Bryson pretend to be a human on YouTube and break 50 at a muni I guess.

Ditto to Mark’s comments . Grow up. Tiger was/is the most entertaining on or off the course, notwithstanding a couple of car wrecks. Perhaps these guys are number one year after year due to their serious towards the game. Wife beater— geezz

You guys just don’t get it, you can be the most effective participant of any sport, but it doesn’t mean you’re fun to watch or that you entertain.
There is nothing about Scheffler which makes him likeable, worth supporting or which engages or entertains the spectator. He’s a supreme golfer and his results speak volumes, and if I were him I’d be happy to be so, I can’t blame him for being as good as he is, HOWEVER watching golf is not about watching yet another tedious and monotonous romp to victory, it’s about being entertaining and creating drama, and I don’t see that in someone as dull, dreary and charisma free as Scheffler.

I don’t like De Chambeau, I think he’s a vile, half-witted oaf but at least he engenders emotion in people by being a pantomime villain, and you can say the same for Reed or in fact someone like Hatton who actually wears his heart on his sleeve, Scheffler is just beige, and I can’t blame him for that, I just don’t want to watch him. Fair enough?

Most golf fans from a pure golf spectacle would much rather watch McIlroy than Scheffler.

It is a tough call. Both Rory and Scottie are well deserving. There is no denying that Rory did more to solidify his ranking amongst the greatest and his emotional win at the Masters will go down in history. Scottie had ANOTHER great year. Winning two majors is HUGE by any metric, but in the end Rory did more to cement his position in the Pantheon of golf. Scottie has many more years to go and in the end will be right up there with the great six Grand Slammers.

Horrible take lol. It’s player of the YEAR not a career achievement award.
