Is PXG Headed Into Darkness?

Is PXG Headed Into Darkness?

A couple weeks ago we passed along patent details for a yet unseen PXG driver, today we’ve got the first look at a USGA approved driver that while not identical, does bear some similarities to those patent drawings.

darkness

We’re working to get some additional details, but what we see here suggest a less aggressive approach to movable weights. This one has but a paltry 10 screws.

Our preliminary mass properties report on the current 0811 driver suggest it’s an excellent low/back CG offering not too far off from Cobra’s FLY-Z and PING’s G30. The DARKNESS appears to be a bit different.

What we see here suggests something more inline with a mid CG offering. What we politely refer to internally as safe from a mass properties perspective.

This could be the next PXG driver, or it could be a one-off for one of PXG’s new troops. Whichever it proves to be, don’t read too much into the DARKNESS name. It’s a nickname for PXG founder, Bob Parsons, and often finds its way onto PXG prototypes.

We’ll update this story with any additional information we receive.

Jericho if you’re swinging your putter upwards of 36 times it’s definitely not you’re money maker, no matter what the cost.

I personally play the 0311T irons, they have been a great addition to my bag over my MP 69s- club and a half extra in yards and much more forgiving. Bottom line, I bought them because I liked the performance and I could.

Anyone have info on how the purchase process works?
When I consider a purchase, price is always a factor but the value in the product or service is always the motivation to buy or invest.
I guess my question is where is the value that justifies the price?
I am sure there is more to come on this looking forward to the pitch.

I’m pretty sure these have to be custom fitted. Their website indicates where one can get fitted. There is only a small percentage of regular golfers who will go for a real fitting. The percentage of casual golfers is close to zero. Trust me I, personally am not a candidate for these clubs but I have been fitted by a recognized club fitter a couple of times. You’ll notice there is no mention of a stock shaft here. My experience is that a quality aftermarket shaft has a mean price of about $250-$350. So the fitted finished product could be close to a grand. But the PXG fitted finished product probably isn’t that far out of whack from a properly fitted Taylor Made or Titleist driver with a quality aftermarket shaft. Most of their fitters also sell Titleist, TMAG, Callaway etc. so one just has to make the decision to take the plunge and get fitted. Many of these fitters include the cost of the fitting ($75-$125) in the final cost of the club. So once that commitment is made he/she can test the PXG against other heads using the same or different shafts, flex etc. and monitoring the difference is spin, club speed, trajectory etc. You may walk out with a PXG, you may walk out with a Cleveland or any other brand head. If you decide on keeping your current club-you’re out the cost of the fitting.

These may well perform and there may be a buyer out there for which this is the best possible fit. I’d guess it is a much higher percentage than those that will actually be good fits and be willing or able to spend the money, which is kind of a shame. At that price point, PXG is going to self select into some customers (and an automatic revenue stream), but will also self select out of others.

I don’t have any issues with PXG. While I’ve owned some high end JDM stuff (and currently have a JDM club in my bag), I doubt I’d go for PXG. I’m a “less is more” kind of person when it comes to adjustability.

Frankly, all this fuss is just laughable.
But for a good fitting, no driver can be noticeably better than any other one. No doubt hiwever some guys will be happy to show that they paid a lot for their golf clubs…

I’m sure that they will sell some clubs, look at some of the offerings from Japan pretty much in the same price point. However for me, I don’t think my iron game is at the point where I can adjust a few weights around to get a different trajectory or feel. By the way, I don’t think that I could afford the range balls trying to dial it in with all of the different combinations! JMO.

I’d like to see the data on that one. Not saying one club may not work better then anither. But in todays world of drivers thingscare more equal then not! No one club with all things equal is giving anyone 21 more yards unless they set it up that way to make one look better then the other for marketing purposes. Meaning put boyh clubs on iron byron and there’s no way all oems are not within 10 yards.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the company philosophy is to make clubs the average Joe couldn’t afford. He actually planned on this, and he claims his clubs are not for everyone. Just like a Ferrari is not for everyone, same concept. People are just bitter that they cannot afford them. Is kind of like saying nobody is going to pay 250k for a Ferrari. Well, guess what, there’s a market for everything. And at the end of the day, he makes more money in one set sold, than 3 sold by another manufacturer. By the way, buying a Ferrari doesn’t make you a better driver.
