The Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company Is Not Dead Yet

Ben Hogan’s website is back up, sort of.

It seems like the old boy isn’t dead yet.

Hogan 22

Hogan President and CEO Scott White says the website went back up Thursday so Hogan can continue to sell clubs direct to consumers.

“The phone has been ringing off the hook by “serious golfers” who are just now realizing our situation and want to buy clubs,” White told MyGolfSpy.

“We’re trying to raise short-term operating funds via the sale of existing inventory, while attracting new, long-term investors simultaneously. It’s a challenge!” – Scott White, Ben Hogan President/CEO

White says it’s still the company’s intention to emerge from its voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy as a leaner, more efficient and profitable entity.  To that end, Hogan has moved into a much smaller space – Callaway’s old Tour Shop offices – and they’re making clubs daily.

“We have only a handful of full-time employees, but we have re-employed a dozen or so craftspeople and assemblers on a contract basis to build clubs.”

If you go to benhogangolf.com, much of the website is functional, but most importantly the “Buy Now” function is inoperative. White says that’s because the Buy Now function is tied to its old operating system, which is no longer in use.

If you want to order clubs, you’ll need to do so either by phone (844-53-HOGAN) or via email — [email protected].

Hogan announced its re-entry into the golf equipment world in January of 2015, introducing the Ft. Worth 15 irons and TK 15 wedges. The company added to the line in 2016 with the game improvement PTx irons and the VKTR hybrids. But last August, company founder Terry Koehler announced he was stepping down from his roles as President and CEO and was replaced by White. At the time, Koehler said his departure was a voluntary retirement.

On January 3rd of this year, Hogan dropped the bombshell that it was laying off its entire Sales and Marketing team, as well as much of its office staff and assembly department. At the time White said the move was a voluntary initiative to restructure the company into a “leaner, more efficient” operation, and that assembly staff would be brought back gradually on a contract basis. Sources told MyGolfSpy that Hogan had not paid many of its suppliers for quite some time.

Less than a month later it was learned that Hogan had filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and had shut down its website, along with all of its social media accounts.

This is the first sign of life from Hogan since the end of January. The company is far from out of the woods, but it has a pulse.

Bought 3 wedges recently but they wouldn’t install my preferred grip, plus they were extremely condescending in trying to explain the cost-benefit of their product. I cancelled the order.

Already owned a full set of Ft. Worth irons when I bought 2 hybrids in early April. Arrived about 2 weeks later. $82.50 per club plus shipping. Can’t beat that.

I’ve had the same problem with customer service both via phone and email…nothing.
It’s a shame, because this company and the name on its product should stand for the finest, and it seems at this point you’d get better service from an email in China.

I am so happy to see the company is still hanging on. I play the PTX irons and I love them! The quality of the products are on excellent and on par with any of the major OEM’s.

I am not sure I understand the argument that the irons are expensive like PXG ($300 an iron). The PTX irons at full price are $150 an iron, which is on par with forged offerings from Titleist, Callaway, Mizuno and Taylormade.

In my oppinion, if Ben Hogan golf company is to be successful going forward, they will need to adjust their go to market strategy. They have primarily relied upon the internet, “green grass” and large scale (e.g. PGA super store, Golfsmith) retailers for distribution. They will need to engage the mid-sized and small retail shops. Additionally, the companies lack of a easy to find fully stocked fitting carts certainly puts them at a disadvantage as the industry’s continues evolve into having most sets sold being custom fit.

Glad to see there is still some signs of life… hoping for the best!

Glad to see they are still alive; hookin’ and a jabbin’ I’ve wanted a set since they’ve debuted but with the price it’ll have to wait. But all in all I’m glad they’re back.

Loved the brand and it will always remain in my heart. As a European distributor just ordered another few hundred sets. Clubs are one of the best quality around. This is everybodys chance to order something awesome. At the same chance you are part of helping them out of trouble, who knows how important your contribution can be. Worst case scenario you only bought the best irons on the market and they will give you joy for years to come.

And what will my warranty be if they go under and I have an issue down the road? No thanks!
Unless they lower their inflated prices…. They leaned towards PXG pricing and I wouldn’t pay that much for a likely gone company that’s gone chapter 11

Excellent! It would have been a shame to lose such a great line of products. I hope the Hogan company can figure out a more sustainable business model.

I’m rooting for them but they really need to change the business model. I was a big fan of the SCOR wedges and I was excited when they purchased the Ben Hogan brand to expand the product line; however, trying to find a fitter or golf store that actually carry the club was impossible. It hard for me to put down $800 for a new set without a swing is NO GO for me

Two years ago at the PGA show, I couldn’t get Hogan to talk to me, I am a buyer for a pretty big golf shop, and we were interested, but everytime I could find someone to talk to me, they would get pulled away to talk to a buddy or something, so we said forget it.
