A Review of the Edison 2.0 Wedges by MyGolfSpy Forum Testers

Edison created the Edison 2.0 Wedge for you.  You, the amateur golfer sitting on the other end of the internet. Don’t believe me?

Take it from Terry Koeler, founder of Edison Golf. He would tell you “better performance has always come in a different-looking package. The original metalwoods? The PING Anser ….  Big Bertha … hybrids. Progress and revolution always look different.”

Edison 2.0 wedges fall into that category. Different.

“Form follows function and the distinctive Edison 2.0 back design delivers the most efficient distribution of mass of any wedges ever,” he says. “More forgiveness translates to improved distance control with enhanced spin and extraordinary feel as a bonus.”

Koeler wants you to have a better wedge game and, not surprisingly, he thinks the Edison 2.0 is the way to go.

MyGolfSpy isn’t a place where bold claims like that are just accepted so we set up a Forum member test to see how good these Edison 2.0 wedges are.

Selection Process

Our Forum staff handpicked four testers for the  Edison 2.0 wedges. First, we asked them to do an online fitting utilizing Edison’s WedgeFit Scoring Range Analysis tool to determine their set makeup. Then we asked them to thoroughly test the performance and features of the Edison 2.0 wedge lineup.

Once our testers completed their fittings and submitted final specs, each was supplied with two Edison 2.0 wedges to put up against their gamers.

Insights from Testers

Initial Impressions and First Swings

Initially, our testers found the fit, finish and feel impressive. It is clear Edison has taken a lot of pride in these wedges and wants to deliver a premium product.

PMookie“really liked the Edison 2.0 on full shots. There was something about the combination of the face and shaft that on well-struck shots.  It had this ‘powerful’ feel to it! It was addicting!”

Placasse61 found his “first visual impression was of nice, rounded lines with soft edges. I really like the brushed matte look of the metal and the crisp lines of the logo and lettering.”

TG8 said “the wedge bounce lays super nice and inspires confidence if I need to open or close the face for tough shots.  Feel is great and you can tell the 5X forged 1025 carbon steel has a solid but soft feeling at impact.

Given the claims of forgiveness, Shapotomous was expecting a large wedge.  He was happy to find “the face is compact, not long from toe to heel and not overly tall.  The forgiveness feature they advertise does not come from presenting a huge clunky looking clubhead. Right away the Edisons look very good to me set up behind the ball.”

GolfSpy BOS noted, “I don’t know how else to really say this, but I was so pleasantly surprised when I slid the neoprene cover off the wedge and got my first real-life look at the Edison 2.0 PW.  It so far exceeded the expectations I had for it from the stock photos online.  Is it different?  Yup.  Is it ugly?  Not at all.  It is a wonderfully and purposely sculpted tool with top notch finishing and crisp clean lines, printing, and paint-fill.”

Launch Monitor and Range Results

The Edison 2.0 wedges were put to the test to see if Edison’s claims of lower launch and greater forgiveness were true.  MyGolfSpy’s Best Golf Wedges of 2023 found the Edison to be ranked in the top five for spin. Would our testers see similar results?

TG8 found launch was lower and ball speed was up compared to his gamers. This led to greater carry while maintaining his stopping power. With regard to forgiveness, “Edison takes this one simply because I noticed off toe or heel strikes that the spin numbers did not deviate greatly and also the ball stayed on track a little bit better.”

Placasse61 found “accuracy with the Edisons are definitely better than my gamers! My ‘baseball type swing’ does not always give me a pure hit. With the Edison wedges, the majority of the shots were 3-5 yds closer to the target vs my gamers.”

One of the big differentiators for Edison is supposed to be a lower launch with more forgiveness.  This is exactly what GolfSpy BOS saw.  “The Edison PW consistently launched lower on average by about a full degree. It was still plenty workable too. I was able to hit high towering shots if needed, but the default shot was a bit more penetrating than that of my gamer PW.  Combine that with the consistent smash factor and high spin and we’ve got a winner in our hands!

PMookie saw different results than the majority of the testers.  Versus his gamers he did not see lower launch or higher spin. He noted that could be due to the very thorough fitting he had for his gamer wedges.

On-Course Results

Once our testers got the Edison 2.0 wedges out on the course it was time to put the claims of greater forgiveness up to the test.  Would they hit more greens?  Would they see more consistency?  How well did the Koehler sole work for them?

PMookie “thought for sure I’d hit more greens, miss ‘closer’, see a difference from my Edels, but I just didn’t.”  This tester was used to having a lot more heel relief and struggled chipping.  His testing revealed “the grinds just didn’t work for me around the greens where I struggle most.”

Placasse61 found “forgiveness is apparent with slight miss hits, demonstrating similar distance and accuracy to well struck balls on the course.”  This led to him “having more confidence in the clubs”and he saw “fewer chunk and skull shots providing greater success on approaches.”

TG8 saw that “Day 1 on the course was a bit of a learning curve, I was mainly not used to the different bounce compared to my Vokeys.” However, “the turf interaction was great once I committed to the Edisons and then found out that I was hitting them a little bit further after flying over some greens inside 100 yards.”

A highlight for Shapotomous was around the green.  He “was able to use the dual-bounce feature to open the face a bit when needed and didn’t have any issues drop-kicking the club into the back of the ball.”

Lastly, when reviewing Rapsodo data from a range session GolfSpy BOS saw

surprising results given the varying strike positions on the Edison 2.0 wedge face.  He noted “the fact that I saw that much of a tighter dispersion in both depth and width despite greater variation in strike was shocking to me.  I mean who wouldn’t want to be over 30% more accurate?”

Miscellaneous Thoughts

Placasse61 thought about the order process and noted “I went on line to be fitted. Emails were received thanking me for being “interested in the Edison wedges” and if there was anything the staff could do to help. I also liked the money-back guarantee if the clubs didn’t fit my game. In addition, when I was selected to test the Edison 2.0 Wedges, the founder Terry Koehler sent multiple emails thanking me, telling me what to expect, and best ways to test his product! I thought it was a nice touch and helped me to feel trust in the company.”

TG8 recalled his favorite experiment of the test,  “I tee’d up every shot about a half inch to make sure I was striking the ball high on the wedge faces.”  And his results:  “Edison’s claims are real again! This one was unreal to me on how much higher the ball speeds were when struck high in the face! We are talking almost 5 mph difference which could be huge on those slight high mishits that would normally knuckle spin and land well short of the green. My course has fluffy fairways and this is so beneficial to see the data!”

Shapotomous commented “While the satin finish looks great, it would be nice to have a choice in finish on the clubs.  I love a raw finish on wedges, I know a few others really like a black-out club and of course many like the shiny finish too.”

GolfSpy BOS said: “I think there can be great benefits from shopping with a smaller specialty equipment manufacturer.  Customer service appears to be top notch and Terry Koehler has clearly put a great deal of thought into the design of this wedge.  Even they note that large OEMs are starting to take notice and move mass up higher in the wedge head. They also have a top-notch trial program of 30 days which I have not seen elsewhere from an OEM. I think that speaks volumes to their confidence in the Edison 2.0 wedge.”

The Final Verdict

With three of our four testers keeping these wedges in the bag over some seriously good competitors (some of the names you would see here and here), it’s hard to argue with the results of the Edison 2.0 wedges.

In addition, one Forum moderator was seriously impressed with the accuracy of the PW model so this could be a high-performance wedge option suitable for low- and high-handicappers alike.

Closing Thoughts

Our four Edison 2.0 testers summarized their reviews as follows:

“My overall impression is Edison meets their claims of making better wedges for the average everyday golfer. I am typically not a gear person, but understand the value of really good tools and feel the Edison 2.0 are good helpful tools!” – Placasse61

“I am going to shoot you straight. On my first day with the Edison wedges I thought all the claims were too good to be true and you could not pry the Vokeys out of my bag… well I was so so wrong about this! The Edison 2.0 wedges are going in my bag and all of their claims were true for myself. Some may be small but in the difficult game of golf any advantage I will always try to take!”TG8

The Edison 53 & 57 wedges definitely have PLAY IT status for me.  They have kicked out the SM9 and RTX-3.  It was very easy to get used to the look, feel and consistent distance these clubs  provided.  I was a Cleveland RTG 588 player for over 20 years and these are in every way equal to those for me.  The distance performance is fantastic with the slight miss not being penalized  by a loss of yardage.  Shot after shot would end up pin high and within 15’ of the cup.” – Shapotomous

“After getting this far in the review I think it’s safe to say you all know my answers here… Trade them. They will not be going into my bag.  I want to be clear that these are QUALITY clubs! They just aren’t for ME.”PMookie

The Edison 2.0 wedge is different, but it also appears that different equals better in this equation.  I saw a more accurate, penetrating, and consistent club versus my gamer on both full and partial shots.”GolfSpy BOS

I live in UK and purchased a 49 and 53 head only at Christmas. Fitted same shaft on them as I play in my irons. First round out 6 birdies, not bad for a 12 handicap. I even found those horrible thin shots that fly off into trouble, behaved better than my usual wedge, in the bag for ever I think and still really impressed

Great article / reviews! I have been watching these wedges for a while now. This may be the impetus….

Looks like PMookie is an outlier. I get it- wedges need to fit your particular game. That said, based on the 3 other reviewers comments I think the Edison 2.0 are worth a trial next time I need to replace my wedges. My only wish is that Edison expands their standard shaft options.

I’m a believer in the Edison wedges, having experienced the same type of results as most of the testers. My set make-up is 49, 53, 57. I bought the heads and had a club builder stick them on AeroSteel shafts. I haven’t looked back.

Dave, what distance gapping do you see in your wedges? What shafts did you get? I’m interested in getting the same setup as yours.

I got the i95 Aerotech Steelfiber shafts. I went for more spin, moving to a regular flex shaft. I think I’m seeing gaps in the 6-8 yard range at my swing speed. It’s a slight increase over the Cleveland’s I was gaming and might be due to that perimeter weighting of the Edisons.
On another note, that 53 degree head works wonders on those low spinner shots into the green from the 25-75 yard range.
