I’ve contributed a number of things here concerning the Wilson line. Played the RM forged years ago, played the pi7’s and liked them but wasn’t overwhelmed. Played the FG forged this year after hitting the Mizuno’s, Titleist’s and TM’s…To be honest, I hit the Mizuno’s as well but I liked the Wilson’s and haven’t looked back. My scores reflected the improvement but more specifically, I liked the compact head, the top line and the confidence I had from 160 in..The long irons were a huge improvement over the pi7s. Wilson’s marketing and sales success is another subject, but in the forged cavity back market, I’ll put the FG forged up against anything.
Wished their woods inspired me as much, but they are just ok..

These are great clubs, I have using them for some time now. I was looking for a new set of clubs and a pro told me not to overlook Wilson as he feels they are one of the most underrated clubs on the market. As soon as I saw these I had to have them. They look great at setup and feel the same when hitting. You don’t need to have titliest or ping to hit low scores. Highly recommended.

Totally agree. Played with many sets of irons over the years and none are as good as the 51s. In fact, have gone back to a 50’s style set, persimmon for woods. Ping putter however and a 5 Adam’s trouble club.

I’m 66 years old, play to a 6 handicap, and have owned and played just about every club design and brand going. The all time winner for me is the Wilson Staff FG-51 irons. I own several sets and wouldn’t play anything else. When it comes right down to it, this subject could be debated forever because everyone has a different opinion. I think that technology is going too far, taking some of the skill away from the golfer and placing it in the shaft, ball or club head. If you want to give yourself a true test of your golfing ability, put a set of FG-51’s in your bag.

These are looking sweet. hopefull they can out due the pi7 which were alot heavier then the other sets and looked VERY oversized for a player’s irons. These irons are looking really good hopefully they can live up to my expectations.

We tested these irons Ryan and they felt good just could not get over the decals on a nice forged iron. Just an oxymoron.

I’m with Joe as well. Ditch the rubber out of the wedges. I don’t care what it does, its ugly. Change them too satin. Satin is classy. And change the black in the cavity sticker to a muter shade if they must keep them.

I don’t really have a problem with the wedges. I mean the only time you are going to see the back is when you get it out of and put it back in your bag. I have tried the wedges and they are pretty solid so I wouldn’t change them. Granted these are your traditional design wedges, but they work.

I disagree as far as removing the rubber inserts. They don’t detract from the appearance IMO and they serve a function. I have the Pi7s and off center hits are far less harsh than other brands, as well as less penal..

I have always been a Wilson fan. I like these but think they should make them in a satin finish instead of chrome. Satin just looks more like a players iron to me. Also get rid of the badge and just use some engraving with paintfill instead. I dont like to worry about some glued on badge flying off my irons!

Hey Joe – I would actually agree with all points in your comment. I tend to think satin finish irons appeal to many more low handicappers. And badges always seem to put a little bit of “cheap” in the equation when they are on an iron.

Some people forget that if you considered yourself a “player” in the 1960’s & 1970’s and maybe the early 80’s too, you either had Wilson Staff OR MacGregor clubs in your bag! Now, that mantle is claimed by Titleist.

I think both Wilson and MacGregor have put out excellent clubs over the last several years, but they’re trying to climb an extremely steep hill to get back even somewhere around the summit. And it’s not that their clubs aren’t as good as the major players, but their marketing budgets aren’t near as big as the top tier companies; let’s face it, marketing sells more clubs and equipment than actual performance does. If MacGregor made the best set of irons in the world tomorrow, who would actually try them (besides me!)? Not many people.

At least Wilson has a bigger pocketbook (owned by a foreign company) and have a tour presence (especially outside the USA/PGA), so they have a better chance to make it back to the top again. I hope they make it…along with MacGregor.

Very true…people forget that Wilson was huge. Actually their clubs are not as good. MacGregor has made some good player irons but they are more focused on the Japanese marke and are no longer concerned with US market.

And I just saw some prototype Wilson drivers from their foreign owner…not good.

I currently have one of the last models made by MacGregor. The MT-C’s. They are absolutely awesome for forged cavity back irons.

Too bad they coudn’t save MacGregor. They were sold the Golfsmith here in the USA and will end up as a component maker like Snake Eyes in the late 90’s.

Started off a few years ago with some Wilson clubs – problem was they weren’t fitted and I didn’t get on with them. I would only ever consider getting fitted these days so if Wilson are going to offer some customisation that would be great. Thanks to Paddy they are being taken seriously again and are going for the magic combination of forgiveability with soft-feel forged. I concur with the previous comment about seeing them in the address position. Like they look of the wedges especially.

Many years ago when I used to win I remember playing with Wilson Ultradine clubs, back then they were one of the major club makers, it would be great to see them on top again, but don,t you think carisma in a player helps more to sell clubs than major wins.

They remind me of something I would see from a club maker that uses knock-offs (non-name brand pieces). Personally, I have never been a huge fan of Wilson and I don’t see much of them around…even with less avid golfers. Just be simple and provide the technology…Mizuno does a great job of this and they don’t market that much either.

For those of use who grew up with Wilson (FG-17) Tour Blades, I think many of these new CB irons look the same, regardless of brand. Good luck to Wilson climbing back on top. I’m sure a Paddy Slam wouldn’t hurt matters any, and may produce a spike in sales, in light of the current economy.

I think the wedges look really cool, but the rest of the irons look pretty plain in comparison to the competition. The forged cavity backs from company’s like Callaway, Titleist, and Mizuno keep the cavity area a little shallower to give them a more compact and blade like appearance. I can’t help but think these W/S clubs look a tad lifeless, and the graphic insert inside the cavity looks a bit cheap as well. I think the pi5’s are much better looking club. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m sure these are a great set of irons, and I’m sure they look very appealing standing over them, but in terms of styling and catching your eye, they just don’t have anything about them that will make them jump out at customers on the shelf. At least not here in the USA.

Taste is subjective. I think Callaway makes the ugliest clubs on the market. Over styled, bulky..the next guy might like them. I don’t care for the new Titleist irons either. Taylor Made has finally made some good looking irons but Cleveland has gone ugly with cheap looking plastic inserts. I love the look of my Pi7’s, both in the bag and at address. They are confidence inspiring.and I like both chromed and satin finishes, if done well..
Years ago Cleveland came out with the VAS line of irons, which supposedly played well, but were awful looking clubs. Comes down to what feels good to you. If I score well and the club feels right at contact, I’ll take that first anytime…Years ago had a great looking set of RAM blades that I couldn’t hit to save my life (and I’ve owned other blades I’ve loved, the Cleveland TA1’s most recently).

Well, they could look a lot worse. Wilson is one of those companies that has released some solid clubs over the past few years, but they never get noticed due to the big dog’s like Callaway, Taylor Made, Titleist, Nike, Etc. I would prefer less flash on the back of the iron, but if they preform I could get over the looks.

I would like to see Wilson get back on top, but they need a couple good releases that grab everyones attention on the market. It is sad to see such a good company stagger along like Wilson has.

Looks okay, don’t think that they can top their release of the Fg59 irons from last year… pure, beautiful blades. I think that the graphic is too busy on the back of the club. Hopefully it doesn’t have any inserts… but it doesn’t look like there is one. Certainly has a rather unique look… definitely a cavity to speak of, slightly different weighting on the toe where the W/S badge is stamped. Looks like a pretty basic camber and bounce… have to see it from the address position, because I’d like to examine the offset and topline.

Not too bad though… probably be tough to sell, though. Not many people go looking for the NEW WILSONS!

They’ve been making pro quality golf and tennis stuff (and baseball, for that matter) my whole life…Hardly something new or unusual..Used a T-2000 racquet in the 70s, Wilson staff woods, forged irons, an A2000 baseball glove etc …
The new equipment is great. Marketing stubbed their toes trying to be all things to all people and diluted the brand for awhile, but they are back making pro quality goods again..I, for one, am putting my money back into Wilson…good stuff!!
