Bob Does Sports Signs With Takomo

Earlier today, Takomo announced that the popular golf comedy group of Bob Does Sports is the latest set of influencers to join their stable.

Bob Does Sports joins the Bryan Bros. and Grant Horvat in the Takomo stable, giving the manufacturer marketing through three of the highest-profile YouTube golf channels in the game.

Takomo’s strategy of promoting their direct-to-consumer gear through influencers is definitely hitting a crescendo.

Bob Does adds Takomo to its profile

Bob Does signed with Callaway back in January 2023, so it’s been three years of representing an OEM.

Similar to how Horvat still games a TaylorMade driver, fairway woods and wedges despite the Takomo partnership, I would think the BDS team will stick with Callaway for longer clubs and golf balls.

It has already been announced that the Bob Does squad will play Takomo irons and wedges.

Both the Bryan Bros. and Horvat have equity in Takomo, so it would appear Bob Does has the same type of deal here—without it, I doubt Takomo could do this.

It does seem like a solid bet for them on the marketing side. How great would it be if Bobby Fairways finally breaks 80 while gaming Takomos? It seems like that would hit the exact target audience the brand is going for.

Callaway, which already has Good Good as its golden goose, probably doesn’t lose much here as I don’t think golf fans were associating BDS with Callaway as closely as other influencers with their respective sponsors.

On the BDS side, I wouldn’t expect their content to change too much. They are so big at this point that I think they should have no issue with player access, regardless of how connected to Callaway they are.

What’s in the bag?

Bobby Fairways and Joey Cold Cuts are both playing 201 MKII irons, while Fat Perez is gaming the 301 CB irons. All three of them are playing the SF002 wedges.

The 201 MKII is a players distance iron for 5-25 handicap golfers, according to the Takomo website. They are listed at $649.

The 301 CB is a players’ cavity-back iron that’s mirrors a traditional, tour-level cavity back. It is also listed for the same price.

Both irons come with KBS shafts.

Takomo has not submitted for iron testing the past couple of years so we don’t have data on them.

This is exciting news for Takomo fans. Bob Does Sports brings massive reach and entertainment value. Having them play the new irons and wedges could be huge for the brand.

I don’t know why anyone would buy takomo over other DTC brands like maltby. I’m sure Takomos prices are inflated because they’re spending money paying YouTube slugs.

I wonder if this was BDS aligning themselves with a brand that’s already taken on other YouTubers (I believe Horvat and the Bryan Brothers took ownership stakes, too) – or if this was Callaway divesting itself from influencers. I have to think that some goofs on YouTube moved the needle on Paradym, Elyte, or Chrome Tour sales. Plus with their own clothing company, they were never going to wear Callaway logos on their clothes.

The Callaway deal was always primarily about pushing market share in golf balls (including the BDS limited release) & increasing exposure for their players via the channel.

Their first video with Takomo was with Jon Rahm so I think Callaway is plenty happy with BDS as long as they keep giving exposure to Callaway pros like Rahm & Xander.

I’ve had the 301 combo set for almost 2 years now. I will say for the small profile they are pretty forgiving except for anything moderately high on the face. They look much sleeker than my previous 718 ap2s and more forgiving than MP-32s. For half price of a big brand iron set id say its at least worth trying them out

I do not care what the influencers say or do. I tried the takomo irons in several models (at that cost hard to ignore) and they sucked.. i build clubs, so when people ask, i should know. Distance was much shorter in game improvement, feell was horrible. CB, Same thing. Tried them both with multiple shafts as well. Blades, meh. Great sets for beginners, but if you actually play, move on. Just my two cents.

I feel like getting signed to them is a sign that youre starting to fall off the charts. Might as well call that brand a graveyard for washed up influencers

I don’t know. I genuinely don’t. I think that influencers are a cheap way to reach wide audiences. I’ve never watched YouTube golf, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t impact purchases.

The Horvat/Bryan Bros Major Cut series is EXCELLENT. I never thought I’d say this but I now watch way more YouTube golf than PGA Tour golf.

The BDS episode with the NFL quarterbacks was also insanely funny. You’re missing out if you don’t at least poke around BDS/Horvat/Bryan Bros and Bryson. There’s a ton of great content and the production quality is surprisingly good, especially Grant’s channel.

I think the Takomo strategy is very interesting. I think it is working to some degree.

These influencers weren’t going to get me to buy Callaway so they sure aren’t good to get me to buy Takomo either. Like them if you want to, but I’m not a fan of these guys, and that is my opinion.

Their driver ($319 USD) and wedges at around $100 are very interesting to me. Also, I have read reviews on their equipment. Can MGS just…buy them, or does it have to be free to be tested? Genuinely curious.

For that price they should just buy them. I can’t help but think that’s not the reason because they buy all the balls for the ball testing. The reason is more likely that MGS makes all its money off links to retail partners so if they don’t have a referral deal with Takomo, they don’t want them included.
