OUR JOB IS YOUR GAME

The most comprehensive blade putter test of 2022 is complete.

At MyGolfSpy, our job is to provide independent, unbiased and objective testing so you can make more confident purchasing decisions. Our 2022 Most Wanted Blade test is an indispensable guide for the off-the-rack buyer or for anyone looking for insight before their next fitting.

Let’s take a look at the best blade putters for 2022.

MOST WANTED SCORING

We have reformulated our 2022 Most Wanted results to a 100-point scoring system. This new system will allow you to better identify golf clubs to potentially help you shoot lower scores.

With Most Wanted Putter testing, we putt an emphasis on one-putts. When you one-putt, you are saving strokes on your overall score.

BUYING CONSIDERATIONS

Length

Typically, stock putters come in either 34- or 35-inch lengths. Length can affect distance and direction. Many golfers find they fit better into putters with shorter shafts. Choose a putter that allows for a relaxed setup based on your address posture.

Loft

The right loft promotes a smooth roll off the face. Too little or too much can cause bouncing, hopping and, ultimately, distance control issues. We recommend working with a professional fitter to determine the right loft for your putting stroke.

Blade or Mallet?

Which is best for you? It’s a combination of personal preference and individual putting stroke. While there are few absolutes in fitting, those with a faster putting stroke often are better suited with lighter blade-putter options. If your stroke is slower and smooth, a heavier mallet might make more of an impact.

Toe Hang

As much as tempo is a factor in choosing the right putter, so too is the amount of arc in your stroke. If you open and close the face more than average, consider a heel-shafted putter with more weight in the toe. Balance the putter on your two index fingers. If the putter head hangs with the toe closer to 6 o’clock, it’s toe-balanced. A face-balanced putter will face the sky. Face-balanced putters are generally well suited for golfers with more of a straight-back, straight-through stroke.

Putter Features

While not quite to the extent of drivers, putters have gone high tech.

It’s not uncommon to find putters with adjustable weighting which, in addition to changing head weight, can alter toe hang to suit either a stronger or less arcing stroke. All Odyssey and Toulon putters offer multi-material Stroke Lab shafts. Evnroll and others offer face-milling patterns or inserts designed to not only promote smooth roll but consistent distance (and, in some cases, direction) on mishits.

Fast Versus Slow Greens

There’s a case to be made for matching the weight of your putter to the speed of the greens you play most often. On slow greens, heavier putters tend to perform better. On fast greens, a delicate touch is needed. Often a lighter putter will produce better results.

BEST BLADE PUTTERS FOR STROKE TYPES

SLIGHT ARC - COBRA KING 3D PRINTED GRANDSPORT 35

STRONG ARC - MIZUNO M CRAFT OMOI 01

  • The Mizuno M CRAFT OMOI 01 storms onto the scene with an exceptional finish in this year's test. It scores respectfully from all three distances.

SB-ST - MATI PUTTERS SYNCHRO

  • The runner up in this year's test and the Best Blade from 20 feet. The Synchro held its own against a strong group of blades.

FIELD NOTES

During our research to find the 2022 Most Wanted Blade Putter, we looked for trends into where the market is moving as well as noteworthy advances manufacturers have made to improve year-over-year performance. Over the course of testing, we solicit feedback from testers. Understanding what they liked, disliked or what they would change is valuable information. However, the subjective feel does not factor into the overall rankings.

Trends and Tweaks

  • Year to year, there always appears to be a putter innovation that spikes attention. This year, COBRA jumps into the mix with 3D Printed components. Additionally, they partnered with Sik Golf. Their COBRA KING 3D Printed Grandsport 35 and KING Sport-45 both utilize the Sik Descending Loft Technology in their faces. It’ll be intriguing to see if this paves the way for more 3D-printed components in years to come.
  • L.A.B. Golf’s Lie Angle Balance technology makes for an intriguing putting experience. Through Lie Angle Balance technology, returning the putter face to square at impact is much more likely. Furthermore, it is fitted by lie angle versus the traditional stroke type. If you like the simplicity it offers, give the B.2 a go. It might captivate you.

2022 MOST WANTED BLADE PUTTER – BUYING TIPS

GET FITTED

Ninety-five percent of amateur golfers haven’t been fitted for a putter. Would it surprise you to know that most PGA professionals (the guys fitting you for a putter) haven’t been fitted, either? If you’re playing the wrong equipment for your game, you could be costing yourself strokes. Don’t choose a putter just because it looks or feels good, get fitted for a putter that performs best for YOUR stroke and start making more putts.

FACE TECHNOLOGY

Face technology comes in different forms: variable grooves, face inserts or a more traditional milled face. While face technology varies, it is critical to the putter. The goal is simple: to provide a more consistent result even when your stroke isn’t up to par. Utilize the technology to your advantage and choose the best one that suits your style and desires.

GRIP STYLE

Grips come in various sizes. It often boils down to personal preference. Larger grips may enhance control through the stroke but they may affect feel. A slimmer grip can increase feel but may cause a lack of control. Choose your grip wisely.

FAQ

Buying a Putter

Q: Should I get fitted for a putter?

A: Without a doubt. Don’t just go to the putting corral at your local golf store and choose the putter that feels the best or the one you happen to make a couple of putts with. Do your research, know the facts and take your knowledge to your golf course or store with the intention of being fitted for the right putter for YOUR stroke. Your best chance of finding the best performing putter comes from getting fitted.

GET FIT FOR YOUR GAME WITH TRUEGOLFFIT™

Unbiased. No Guesswork. All Major Brands. Matched To Your Swing. Advanced Golf Analytics matches the perfect clubs to your exact swing using connected data and machine learning.

FREE FITTING

Q: How do I find the right length putter for me?

A: An easy test of putter length: Take a comfortable putting stance with a putter. If the putter is too short, it likely it will sit too upright or the heel will be off the ground. If it’s too long, you’ll feel you’re crowding the ball and the toe will be pointing up slightly. Visit a fitter.

Q: What is the price range for a typical putter?

A: Name-brand putters range from $99 to more than $400. Higher-priced models are often 100-per-cent CNC milled but it’s also true that you could be paying a premium for the logo on the putter. Price may always be a factor but don’t assume the best putters are the most expensive.

Most Wanted

Q: How is the Most Wanted Winner determined?

A: Rankings for the 2022 Best Putters are based on a 100-point scoring system. Putters are scored at 5-, 10-, and 20-feet. The individual scores are then aggregated to arrive at the overall score. Scores are weighted such that 10-foot score has the greatest influence on the cumulative score.

Q: How were the best putters for stroke type determined?

A: At the beginning of the test, each putter is classified by its toe hang/stroke type. The best within each designation are those that finished highest overall score with respect to toe hang/stroke type.

Q: How much does subjective feedback like looks, sound and feel factor into your rankings?

A: ZERO. Our rankings are based purely on total putt counts and quantifiable performance metrics. We include subjective notes only because readers have asked for more feedback directly from the testers.

Q: Will you publish a mallet putter test?

A: Yes, those results will be published in the coming weeks.

Being a man of many golf toys, nothing is off the table. Then I keep putting the TM Modena 8 Blade back in the bag. The Evnroll EV1 goes in now and then, or the old Tommy Armour Zaap Kappa lv, but the Modena 8 gets the most play, the newest keep being traded for another that then gets traded, and on and on.

I think I can speak for most when I say it feels great to roll up to the course with a Scotty in your bag. HOWEVER, the underlying theme I have seen over the last 3 years of MGS testing on blade putters is the price tag doesn’t matter. The Tommy Armour and Wilson Infinite line of putters have performed surprisingly well over the years compared to putters that cost at least twice as much. So much so that I decided to give the Wilson Infinite West Loop at try 2 years ago (over a Studio Stainless Newport 2.5). While it feels great pulling the Scotty out of the bag, it feels pretty dang good sinking more putts with the Wilson.

I recently bought a LAB blad 2 putter but struggled because their grip with the 1.5 degree built in forward press messed me up. I am a straight back-thru stroke so I went to a Pure midsize . With the softness of Pure’s rubber I really get a whole lot more feel in the stroke which helps me control the putt better. How accurate is test when a face balanced user now putts with a toe hand?

Interesting read; IMO, carbon steel blade putters, milled from a single block of steel, will always provide great feel/accuracy. Have an older Scotty that provieds a nice roll, but believe that its superseeded but the Bettinadri BB1 & the Sub70 Sycamore, both of which are milled carbon steel. None of these cost more than $250. Still comes down to the preference of the user…

While there’s benefits to robot testing, you’re missing out on so much and once you’ve lined the putt with a robot or one of the gadgets Rife or Pelz use, you’re basically testing the green and ball balance and not the putter. Humans will tell you about weight, feel, sound, grip, look et cetera.

I also miss the 3 bar graphic. The new “scores” are fine, but with very little explanation of how they are tied to strokes gained at each distance, except for 10 feet = 55% weight. Come to think of it, I’d love to see the explanation for that choice of weighting.

Come on now, I’m not sure I would judge how a good a putter is from 20 feet unless I was using it. Putting is just to unique for generalities of any kind to be made. Sorry guys, but this one just doesn’t do me any good, especially when you are pushing for a putter fitting to determine what works for you. Perhaps robot testing the putter makes more sense than using human testers.

Recently switched from the Odyssey White Hot OG to the Odyssey Tri Hot 5K. On really good greens in Palm Springs I made 31 putts in 18 holes. Last week in Omaha, I made 30 putts on really crappy greens (still brown from winter and bumpy). Would you say the Tri Hot is better based on this? No way. It will take quite a few more rounds to come to that conclusion.

Robots don’t play golf, humans do. When testing performance, human testing is superior. And yes, we absolutely want golfers to get fit for every club, but we know that isn’t always going to happen.

When golfers buy “off the rack” it’s important to know which brands/models perform the best. across a range of testers. As always, your individual experience may or may not match up.

PS – I really hope you only made 18 putts in 18 holes :)

Started with a hand me down Bullseye, played a Rossi mallet, settled on a Scottie Newport II for several years until I recently built a PXG “Closer” to my personal preferences. I can make putts with all of those, however, my mindset is that the one you like that feels good to you and fits your stroke is what should be at the top of your list. I know MGS can’t test everything, so I’m not surprised the Closer wasn’t tested, but even if it was and failed miserably, you couldn’t get it out of my bag!

Interesting test for you. We have found toe hang putters work best with the ball well forward in your stance, while face balanced work best with the ball more centered so they need more loft.

Dave – you can learn how to read greens AND improve your consistency with the correct equipment. There are a lot of people who want to shoot the lowest score possible, and I bet a modern putter would save 1-3 strokes over a bullseye.

That would depend who was using the Bullseye, I seem to remember Notah Begay 111 putting better than most other pros and he used an old bullseye putter and from both left and right stances.. He also carded a 59.

There was a Bettinardi in the test. The test is for best putters that have come out between the last test and now. Cameron’s haven’t changed in design for years. It’s not a test of best blade putters that have ever been produced, but best from the new year. That’s why last years #1 wasn’t featured in the test.
