Only One Game-Improvement Iron Finished Top 3 In Distance And Forgiveness

Finding both distance and forgiveness in a game-improvement iron is a tough ask. For many golfers, you either get consistency in the shots you hit or you pick up extra distance. It’s hard to find both. To show just how rare that combination is, only one iron in our 2025 Best Game-Improvement Iron testing finished in the top three for both distance and forgiveness: the Mizuno JPX 925 Hot Metal.

Mizuno JPX 925 Hot Metal

The Mizuno JPX 925 Hot Metal continues the brand’s strong track record of building irons that blend power and playability. In this year’s test, it earned a runner-up finish overall, with standout scores in both distance (9.0) and forgiveness (8.8).

Testers praised it for producing some of the longest shots in the category while still keeping dispersion under control.

Some of the feedback:

  • “Great sounding, performed the best, was one of the straightest ball flights, and very responsive.”
  • “Crazy distance off the face, best feel and forgiving.”
  • “Mizuno just doesn’t miss when it comes to iron design and performance.”

It’s this rare balance that sets the JPX 925 apart. Most irons in this category lean strongly one way—either towards raw distance or reliability. The JPX 925 Hot Metal manages to give you both.

✅ Who Should Buy

  • Golfers who want a balanced iron that offers distance without giving up forgiveness.
  • Players looking for a proven model with a track record of success in Mizuno’s Hot Metal family.
  • Mid-handicap golfers who need help in multiple areas but still want a strong performer across the board.

❌ Who Should Skip

  • Golfers who avoid Mizuno out of brand bias or mistakenly think Mizuno only makes “player’s irons.”
  • Those seeking maximum accuracy above all else.

Final thoughts

The Mizuno JPX 925 Hot Metal is the rare iron that checks every major performance box: distance, forgiveness and accuracy. It narrowly missed out on being our top-rated game-improvement iron of 2025. 28* 7 Iron, a lot of people wont be able to hit that properly; 7 iron should be no more than 31* max and that’s if you are looking to get 150yds out of it minimum.

I would be interested to see the data for distances using degrees loft rather than the traditional numerical irons. Manufacturers have been claiming longer distance in their irons by reducing the loft angles. They may be easier to hit through materials but are they truly longer?

I concur and should also include shaft length. Biggest farce in the 80s were the Gary Player irons which he hyped as longer and forgiving. Turns out the manufacturer severely jacked iron lofts and shaft lengths. Mid and higher handicappers could hardly hit 6,5,4,3 irons. Heard Gary took a big financial hit from his involvement in this fiasco.

I didn’t see it. Are they sometimes based on region? I did see a bunch of PXG putters, which I haven’t seen before.

$799 would be a great deal for those clubs.
