Best Hybrids 2023

Most golfers utilize a hybrid as a long-iron replacement. Why? Because, in general, they offer more forgiveness and are easier to hit than traditional long irons. They also are designed to launch the golf ball higher, more consistently. This can lead to more success hitting approach shots, especially from longer distances.

Can a hybrid or two make your game more fun and lower your score? Let’s take a look at the best hybrids of 2023!

Best Hybrids 2023 Scoring

Our overall rankings are a compilation of accuracy, distance and forgiveness. Each scoring category is weighted to achieve the overall score. Since hybrids are generally used for approach shots into greens, we conduct this test by having our testers hit into a green. For this test, accuracy takes precedence over distance and forgiveness.

Accuracy

Accuracy plays a vital role in overall performance. Our Accuracy score is strictly based on one metric:

  • Strokes Gained

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a measure of consistency. As such, our Forgiveness metrics seek to identify the clubs that provide the most consistent result. Please note: “Consistent” doesn’t always mean “consistently good.” Our Forgiveness metrics include:

  • Ball speed consistency
  • Spin consistency
  • Carry consistency
  • Dispersion area

Distance

Our Distance metrics are simple:

  • Carry distance
  • Total distance

Best Hybrids 2023 Buying Considerations

Performance should be your primary concern when buying a hybrid but there are some additional things you may want to think about before you make your decision.

icon

Shaft Selections

Shaft selection is a key ingredient to any golf club purchase. Graphite shafts dominate the hybrid space but not all graphite shafts are the same. Just like steel shafts, each offers varying performance attributes. Some can add height and spin. Others assist with lowering ball flight and spin. As well, matching the appropriate golf shaft with your hybrid of choice is important. Go through a professional fitting to determine what your needs are when considering a hybrid.

icon

Accuracy, Distance or Forgiveness?

Look, we know everyone loves distance in golf. It will always be a heavily weighted ingredient in golfers’ purchasing decisions. Hybrids are made to help golfers who struggle with consistency, especially on longer approach shots. Finding a hybrid that fits your needs for accuracy, distance and forgiveness is the ultimate goal but accuracy should remain your top priority.

icon

Cost

The average cost for a hybrid in this year’s test is $268.47. There are some that cost $299.99 or more but some are much less, including last year’s winner, the Sub 70 949x, for $189, which is our Best Value selection.

How We Test – Best Hybrids 2023

sleeves of the 2023 Titleist Pro V1

To determine this year’s best hybrids, 20 testers hit a total of 6,900 shots. Each tester hit 15 shots with each participating hybrid model.

We limit variables by collecting data using Titleist Pro V1 as our official testing golf ball and Foresight GCQuad as our official ball launch monitor.

Best Hybrids 2023 – FAQ

Buying A New Hybrid

Q: How often should I buy a new hybrid?

A: While on rare occasions there are quantifiable year-over-year breakthroughs, typically it takes three to five years for manufacturers to make any significant performance gains. With the USGA further tightening restrictions on manufacturers, it’s possible, even likely, that it will take longer still moving forward. Our recommendation is to buy a new hybrid only when it appreciably outperforms what is already in your bag. Of course, if you want a new hybrid because you want a new hybrid, that’s fine, too.

Q: How do I determine the right hybrid for me?

A: Choosing the right type of hybrid can seem daunting but starting with an assessment of your own game is a great jumping-off point. Figure out what you need out of a hybrid. Do you find yourself having long irons into greens often? Do you maybe need a hybrid for short par-4 tee shots or high-lofted shots into par-5s? Make sure you let your fitter know what you’re hoping to achieve so they can guide you to a club that will optimize launch conditions and help you shoot lower scores.

Q: Does the shaft matter?

A: Absolutely. While changes to spin and launch are rarely massive, shaft changes frequently lead to improved accuracy, tighter dispersion and greater overall consistency.

Q: What should I look for when testing hybrids?

A: While golfers have been conditioned to consider distance to the exclusion of nearly everything else, we recommended looking at the little numbers and looking for small circles. When comparing metrics like distance and ball speed, be sure to look at your standard deviations (the small numbers usually found under the big ones on the data screen). Smaller numbers mean better consistency which will usually mean more than an extra yard or two on the golf course. Similarly, look for tighter dispersion ellipses (small circles). We can’t overemphasize the importance of consistency with hybrids.

E723 Hybrid

MOST WANTED

Q: How is the Most Wanted Hybrid determined?

A: To determine the Most Wanted Hybrid, we collect performance metrics with Foresight GCQuad Launch Monitors. To determine our overall rankings, we don’t just focus on averages. Instead, through proprietary methodologies, we determine the winner based on three key metrics: accuracy, distance and forgiveness.

Q: How is the “longest” hybrid determined?

A: To determine the longest hybrid, we again look past the raw averages to consider the average total yards across the test pool along with the statistical reliability of that data.

Q: How is the “most forgiving” hybrid determined?

A: To determine the most forgiving hybrid, we focus on a narrower set of metrics that includes:

  • Ball speed consistency
  • Spin consistency
  • Carry consistency
  • Dispersion area

Q: How are the hybrids in the test fitted to each golfer?

A: We use a fitting process that we call fit from stock. Hybrids are fitted to each tester using the stock, no up-charge options from each manufacturer. We test hybrids ranging in lofts from 18 to 20 degrees. While less so in this category, adjustability is growing in popularity. When movable weights or adjustable hosels are available, we make every effort to optimize each club for each tester. Occasionally, manufacturers will send multiple sets with different stock shafts that we can utilize to improve launch conditions.

Q: How much does subjective feedback like looks, sound and feel factor into your rankings?

A: ZERO. Our rankings are based purely on launch monitor data and quantifiable performance metrics.

Titleist TSR3

87 overall

The Bottom Line

Titleist TSR3 hybrid ranks 5th overall in our best hybrids 2023 test. TSR3 hybrid ranks well for accuracy and forgiveness. It places 7th for accuracy and 8th for forgiveness. Surprisingly, it has a below average distance score relative to the field. If subjective items, such as feel, looks, and sound matter to you, be encouraged as our testing pool ranks TSR3 hybrid well for all three of these subjective categories.

Pros

Titleist TSR3 hybrid produces reliable accuracy and consistency off the club face. Golfers who prioritize accuracy will want to give this hybrid a go. Furthermore, it ranks well for feel, looks, and sound.

Cons

Frankly, it is a bit shocking the TSR3 hybrid ranks below average for distance relative to the field. For some golfers, this will be a knock against it.

Titleist has recently launched a new golf club, the TSR3 Hybrid, which is designed with a player-refined shape to provide better interaction through both short and longer grasses for improved control. The club’s shape is inspired by previous models and offers confidence to players with reduced offset. The adjustable CG Track System has also been refined to provide a wider and more precise range of CG placements. The club’s new body design has a higher inertia that is stable, providing more forgiveness and less deflection in difficult conditions.

Who’s it For

From a design standpoint, Titleist TSR3 hybrid suits low to mid handicap golfers. However, its performance for accuracy and forgiveness may entice higher handicap golfers. If you are considering the Titleist TSR3, go through a fitting to optimize performance.

I bought the Sub70 hybrid following the great review on MGS. Also in the UK Todays golfer carried out a very thorough test of all hybrids and they again confirmed MGS’s findings.
I bought the 5 hybrid and I would confirm for me a14HC the straightest and most accurate hybrid I’ve ever used including Ping 430!

Thanks for another year of bastardized data. These results mean nothing. All you have found out is what works best for 35 golfers. Back in the early days of mygolfspy you would use a robot to hit balls with each club. With each club you would test off center and center contact. I know we’re not all robots, but the data wasn’t bastardized. You would know which club would preform better under precise conditions. Now all you do is introduce more variables resulting in pointless results for consumers. I gurantee if you did the whole test over again with the 35 golfers there would be a wide range of different results… I wish we could go back to the good ol days. Sincerely, Andy Griffith

PS Could we please get another golf ball test with robot data not 35 golfer bastardized data.

I’m actually in the market for hybrids right now. I hit the ping g430, there’s really nothing not to like about it except the price. It’s getting scary that they’re $300 a pop. Actually just bought a 5W at a phenomenal price, so right now I really only need replacements for my 4 & 5 hybrids.

Looks like the Ping is significantly better than the rest at $299 it should be I guess. Another thorough test, thank you

Perhaps another test, a sub category test if you will. A test of “High lofted fairway woods, 19 degrees and higher”

More and more of us and pros are opting for 5HL, 7 and 9 woods in the bag….

I love the reviews, very informative and helpful. I’ve played hybrids since the original Taylor Made Rescue Club (I still have it) came out and they are a great option in my bag. However, there’s a club that you’ve mentioned before, the Callaway Apex UW, that I think needs a deeper review. Since it’s something of a “tweener” I don’t think you have ever tested it against either hybrids or higher lofted fairway woods. I purchased this club when it first came out and it has been, by far, the best utility club I ever owned. I know that supply chain issues really disrupted Callaway’s plans for the club, but it would be interesting to see how it compares to other clubs on the market.
