First Versus Worst: Hybrids

We tested 23 hybrids in 2024, analyzing their performance in distance, accuracy and forgiveness. The PING G430 is the best overall hybrid and the XXIO 13 is the worst hybrid of 2024. If you think it may be time to upgrade your hybrid, it’s worth taking a look at the differences between the best and the worst and understanding where your money is best invested.

Distance

It’s not often that the best hybrid for distance will win the best overall hybrid. Sometimes those extra yards have too strong of an impact on accuracy and forgiveness that the overall ranking suffers. However, the PING G430 had strong performance in the distance category and also finished on top.

With a fourth-place finish for distance, the PING G430 is slightly longer than the XXIO which finished sixth.

Distance performance in the hybrid should not be your biggest concern. Also the difference in distance performance between these two clubs is so minimal. Don’t use it to make your final decision. Where you need to focus your attention is accuracy.

Accuracy

Accuracy is how close you can hit your golf shot to your intended target. The closer you are, the better you can save strokes on the course. The PING G430 is the most accurate hybrid of 2024. The XXIO 13 was second-last.

Accuracy is a must when buying golf equipment. The G430 is long enough and has the accuracy to back it up.

Forgiveness

The XXIO is the least-forgiving hybrid of 2024. The PING G430 finished fourth. When it comes to forgiveness, we look at how consistent the ball speed, distance and spin numbers are across the board.

Can you hit a great hybrid shot but follow it up with three poor shots?

All golfers have some inconsistency in their games. The more forgiveness the club has, the easier it is to mask some of that. With the XXIO 13, our testers struggled to get consistent results. The PING G430 was a different story.

One tester said, “the PING G430 is consistent, easy to hit, and has controllable distance.”

Value

Here’s where you assume that the more expensive a hybrid is, the better the performance will be. Wrong. The PING G430 is actually not a 2024 release so the pricing is down to $239. The XXIO 13 is $299. You can decide for yourself which one is the better value.

Bottom line

The PING G430’s performance speaks for itself. If you are considering a new hybrid in 2024, it should be at the top of your list of golf clubs to test.

It’s worth noting that XXIO is aimed more towards the golfer with slower swing speeds who wants a premium club designed specifically for them.

Slow swing Seniors and ladies in my area swear by the XXIO, say they like its lightweight flexible shaft, and it’s easy to swing. They say Ping is too heavy and stiff and hard feeling.
Who the heck you testing these with to say it’s the worst? I thought you did these tests dependant on player skill and speeds?

I think these tests are interesting, but XXIO is such a niche offering. I think “Best vs. Cheapest” or “Premium vs. Value” would have a greater appeal.
