First Versus Worst: Game-Improvement Irons

This year’s best game-improvement irons test featured 17 models. After analyzing the data on distance, accuracy and forgiveness, the clear standout was the Tour Edge Exotics E723. On the other end of the spectrum, the Wilson Dynapower irons finished in last place. However, there’s an interesting twist to this story that’s worth exploring further.

Distance

It’s no secret that golfers shopping for game-improvement irons expect to get more distance from a new set. Even golfers who claim not to care about distance still do. Distance is a key part of the sport.

You might be surprised to learn that the Wilson Dynapower was the longest iron in the 2024 test.

Yes, the golf iron that produced the most distance also had the worst overall finish in the test. When improving your game, accuracy is ultimately more crucial than distance, so keep that in mind.

While the Tour Edge Exotics was not the top performer in distance, it secured a solid fifth place overall. Getting a professional fitting can often help address issues with distance and improve overall performance.

Accuracy

We are done with the surprises at this point.

When it comes to accuracy and forgiveness, the Tour Edge stands out as the better iron than the Wilson Dynapower. The Tour Edge earned fourth place overall for accuracy.

To determine the top iron for accuracy, we use Strokes Gained as the metric. The idea is that we want the accuracy of the irons to save strokes on the course.

The iron with the most accuracy in the 2024 test was the MacGregor MACSPD. Interestingly, it was also the shortest iron of the test. We will let you figure that one out for yourself.

The Wilson Dynapower landed in 15th place for accuracy. Not a strong showing.

You’ll have to decide if distance is truly what is keeping you from shooting lower golf scores. For most players, it is not.

Forgiveness

The last major category for our game-improvement iron testing is forgiveness. When we test for forgiveness, we look at consistency in the shot outcomes.

Do the irons offer one perfect shot followed by three terrible shots? This consistency or forgiveness metric is very important for the game-improvement category.

Most golfers with game-improvement irons in the bag know they can’t repeat the same swing every time. When a golf iron can step in and give you results that are both consistent and reliable, it deserves to win best game-improvement iron of 2024.

The Tour Edge Exotics E723 is the most forgiving iron in the 2024 test while the Wilson Dynapower is the least forgiving.

Value

The Tour Edge Exotics irons are $799. The Wilson Dynapower retails for $699. The $100 difference between first- and last-place performance should not be the most difficult decision.

However, if your only goal in purchasing new irons is to gain distance, you’ll like what the Wilson Dynapower offers. Going for a fitting where you test both irons should help you narrow down the best fit for your game.

The bottom line

The longest iron in game improvement did not earn the top spot in our 2024 testing. It earned last place. Yes, we weigh the test based on accuracy which is the most important factor in golf iron performance. Do you want to save shots or not?

At some point in your golf career, you’ll have to decide which performance type is the most important for your game.

Tour Edge versus Wilson: Which is right for you?

Who’s it For?

✅ Someone looking for more forgiveness. The most forgiving game-improvement iron of 2024.

The golfer who cares about accuracy. With a fourth-place overall finish for accuracy, the Tour Edge can save strokes on the course.

Who’s it not for?

❌ Not the shortest iron in the test but not the longest. If you seek maximum distance, try something else.

❌ Some testers found the thicker top line to be the biggest negative to the Tour Edge irons.

Who’s it For?

✅ Players looking for more distance. The longest iron in the 2024 test.

Golfers on a budget: For $699, the Wilson Dynapower is one of the more affordable golf irons in the test.

Who’s it not for?

❌ Anyone who needs accuracy on the course may struggle with the Wilson Dynapower performance.

❌ The least forgiving game-improvement iron of 2024. A golfer who lacks consistency may have difficulty with the Dynapower.

I am using the least forgiving iron- the Dynapowers steel KBS Tour lite shafts- with the worst golf ball ever tested – Snell 3.0 – and my handicap has lowered from 10.2 to 5.4 across 70 rounds to date in 2024 from the tees I normally play – 5700 yards. 69 yrs old & losing swing speed & hairline rapidly.
I thought MYGOLFSPY was the Bible of gear testing but starting to lose my faith. Maybe the testers are too good for some of the clubs they test?

Distance is such a joke metric for irons, pandering only to the ignorant masses. If your 7 iron doesn’t go far enough, take a 6. You have an opportunity at MGS to improve the industry and stop talking about distance with respect to irons, just leave it out…but then again perhaps you are also pandering, it’s all about the $$$

Do you actually read any of the articles they produce? No where does anyone recommend you purchase an iron because it has jacked lofts and will fly further. Distance is just another data point they can capture and categorize. If you think MGS panders and writes articles for kickbacks then go read elsewhere.

Was the test done using the same shaft for both sets? Switch the shafts between these two sets and see what you get. Are the shafts

I am using Wilson Dynapower, I play off 6 hc. I hit accurate shots with these clubs and I am yet to observe this unforgiveness. I was using Muzino but the dynapower is a fantastic club .

This is the “Game Improvement” category. Typically players using these types of clubs are not single digit handicappers. Perhaps you’re better than the target audience?

The MacGregor MACSPD finished last in distance because it is 2 to 3 degrees weaker lofts than the Dynapower. What this means is that if you are a senior golfer or have a driver speed 90mph or below the MACSPD will get the ball airborne easier than the Dynapower.

How many yards difference was there in the dispersion. Did you measure dispersion using the shortest iron distance as your “benchmark”?

Yes! It would be awesome to see the numbers and distances! Please share this vital info instead of just 1st place vs last place!

Top line on the tour edge is huge, maybe that the reason it was top iron.
