Best Blade vs. Best Mallet – 2021

2021 Best Putter—Who Takes the Title?

With 2021 coming to a close, let’s take a look back and crown the year’s best putter.

In 2021, there were two putters that stole the show:

Let’s see which putter claims the 2021 Best Putter title.

Most Wanted Putter Testing

Most Wanted Putter testing features 20 testers. Throughout testing, testers hit putts from five, 10 and 20 feet. Results were calculated using our Strokes Gained methodologies. For this segment, we’re looking at data from the 18 testers who participated in both the Most Wanted Blade and Most Wanted Mallet tests.

Putter Backgrounds

Strokes Gained Results

Through our Strokes Gained methodologies, here are the results for each putter against their corresponding fields:

As you can see, the White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab takes the edge from five and 10 feet and overall Strokes Gained. Meanwhile, Triple Track 2-Ball narrowly beats the White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab at 20 feet.

Key Findings

1. White Hot From 5 and 10 Feet

If you made more putts from within 10 feet, how drastically would your scores change?

Throughout testing, the Odyssey White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab displayed exceptional performance from five and 10 feet compared to the Odyssey Triple Track 2-Ball. From five and 10 feet, the WH OG #1 Stroke Lab required five and six less putts respectively versus the Triple Track 2-Ball. Five and six don’t seem like earth-shattering numbers but golf is a game of small numbers, and those numbers add up over time.

2. Difference Makers From 20 Feet

Consistency and performance from within 20 feet are crucial. Both the White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab and the Triple Track 2-Ball showcase consistency and performance at 20 feet. From 20 feet, Triple Track 2-Ball ousts the White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab by two total putts. A thin margin but it demonstrates just how good both of these putters can perform from 20 feet.

3. 2021’s Best Putter

Overall, the Odyssey White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab is the best putter of 2021. Not only did it have the best Strokes Gained score, it also has the fewest total putts. The White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab had a total of 643 putts, nine fewer than the Triple Track 2-Ball.

The biggest areas of separation were five and 10 feet. By making five and six more putts respectively than the Triple Track 2-Ball, White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab provided consistency from closer distances. Think about it. If you can make nearly three percent more putts from within 10 feet, how much would it positively affect your scores?

Performance Matters

Both of these putters perform exceptionally well within their classifications. Under our Strokes Gained methodologies, they are putters worthy of your consideration whether you favor a blade or a mallet. Having said that, we determined there is only one 2021 Best Putter and that is the Odyssey White Hot OG #1 Stroke Lab.

What if, going forward with your putters, instead of doing it in Mallet vs Blade. What about classifying per putting stroke ? Arc, Slight Arc, Straight ?

I’m a little dubious about the final results because I suspect it could be different on a different day.

Plus, if mallets aren’t somewhat better, what is the point of using them?

But that question is answered when you look at the SG for the two tests. A couple of the blade putters did exceptionally well, but most of the others produced negative SG numbers.

      Including past winners.

Whereas in the mallet test there weren’t the exceptionally good SG scores, but on the other most of them were positive.

Which tends to suggest a mallet is likely to suit more people..

As to which mallet, or which blade, you’ll still need to try them out or get fitted.

I would be interested to see a grip shootout on the same putter. Pistol vs Mid Size vs Jumbo. Try the most popular grips on the market and if there are any strokes gained?

I really dislike bent or double bent putter shafts like in the two-ball putter in this test. I know everyone is different but I find it to always be such a mental challenge, regardless of putter, to line up putters when the shaft doesn’t square to the line. I’m fine with offsets and any length of neck/hosel but when the shaft isn’t square with the target line, things seem to get weird. I even used the old Odyssey three ball for a long time and the bent shaft in that drove me nuts. I loved having all the help from the three ball head but the shaft drove me nuts because it just seemed unnatural.

I currently play a blade putter (Yes brand) and love it. I really like the alignment help from the Odyssey Tri-Ball I used to use and other mallets but I will say, there is something visually odd about what mallets look like during the stroke since they make it easier to see that the putter is only square at impact (assuming you’re swinging with an arc). I think seeing the club head out of square during the stroke can really cause discomfort to people. Blade putters also aren’t square during the stroke but they don’t look as unnatural. That’s just my opinion though.

I have tried every putter under the sun, both blade and mallet. I always go back to my no name mallet putter which I purchased back in 2005 from a component company. It is an individual thing.

I love that you guys did this test. But I think if we are talking about humans making nine more putts out of approximately 650 attempts, than this is a toss up. There is too much human error to declare one better with that close of a performance.

The calculation I made is 9÷652 * 36 ( regulation number of putts in a round). And difference is 0.497 strokes per round. Now half a stroke per round is interesting to me.
Sure need to check statistical significance, but given how even these putters would be expected to be, it definitely is a bit of an eye opening number.

Went to the White Hot OG Rossie S Stroke Lab Putter, 33″ shaft, about a month ago and it was the right move. Making more putts inside 10 feet than ever, and my longer putts are more accurate as well. Listened to what Rory was saying about blades vs. his mallet and decided he might be on to something. My beloved Scotty Newport now lives in the dark …….

These new putter tests are all well and good but I would like to see the new putters tested against some of the older putters like the Yes putters and the carbite putters and the Rife putters.
The champion putters from each year should face off, New is not always best, a putter can only do so much and the rest is up to the user although that beig said, the new Cobra putters with the SIK variable loft faces are possibly the most advanced putters of all time.

I agree. Just went back to my old Ping Craz E center shaft and have found a new relationship.

This is not the way to pick a putter, which is the most individual oriented club. Went through the SAM PuttLab at Club Champion in the winter of 2020. It moved me from a blade to a mid-mallet, and my putting has been much better ever since.. I’d recommend a putter fitting for every golfer. FWIW, I ended up with a Scotty Cameron Special Select Flowback 5.5. LOVE IT!

I did the same at Club Champion, went to the mid mallet after the SAM session. It’s the best thing I’ve done for my golf game.

I got fitted for a Scotty Cameron Fastback 1.5 and I was shocked how much arch I had. Needed more toe flow. Been making more putts so far.

I have had more par puts with a tour edge putter than any other, gave up on the Rossie putter because I was not putting well at all. I have a Tour Edge mallet, Reden pure feel, 304 SS: steel shaft over the Rossie Mallet. Could you review Tour Edge Putters?

Edit this! : “ From five and 10 feet, the WH OG #1 Stroke Lab required five and six more putts respectively versus the Triple Track 2-Ball.

      Reverse that!!!

Not the only one. I was confused by it as well. I just figured I misunderstood.
