2021 What’s In the Bag Survey

With the anticipated flurry of 2022 releases still a few weeks off, we wanted to use the break as an opportunity to tackle our most comprehensive What’s In the Bag survey ever. While we certainly want to know what brands you’re playing, our goal is to go deeper into your bag makeup.

For example, is your set composition fairly straightforward or do you have carry something a bit out of the mainstream like a 9-wood or a 64-degree wedge?

Our objective is to obtain a clearer picture of what our readers are playing.

Take the Survey

The survey should take less than 10 minutes. Because of the level of detail, you may be asked for details about a club type you don’t carry. If that happens, simply select the None option (it should be listed first).

Click here to take the survey.

Over the last year I’ve enjoyed dropping back to 8 clubs on more than the odd occasion. Driver. 4 Hybrid,7,8,9, PW, SW, Putter. Carry light and enjoy the stroll. Less is more. Less is less to think about. Get creative.

My bag’s got a wide assortment of tools that have taken years to refine….but they work for me.

      Ping G15 12* driver
Callaway GBB Hawkeye 3 wood, 15* with Firm Flex graphite shaft
Callaway GBB Hawkeye 5 wood, 18* with Firm Flex graphite shaft
Callaway GBB Hawkeye 7 wood, 20* with Firm Flex graphite shaft
Top Flite Intimidator Titanium 400, 7 wood, 25* with regular graphite muscle shaft
      Ping G400 irons (6-PW & AW)
      Cleveland CG-15 SW, 54*
      Cleveland CG-15, LW, 60*
      Odyssey 2 ball CS putter

Over the years I have tried numerous brands (Titleist, Taylormade, Adams Golf) of the newer fairway woods but everything I’ve tried to date has yet to match the performance & consistency I have with my 1990’s era Callaway GBB Hawkeye’s fairway woods.

How about asking ‘How many putters do you own?’ I’d be counting for quite a while. Putters are scattered throughout the house. And yes, I do live alone.

I broke down and got fit twice this past year. Once at 2ndSwing for irons and once at Club Champion for hybrids, fairway woods, and driver. Both were great experiences. Club Champion is a little more high end with all their custom options compared to 2nd Swing. I would recommend both with no hesitation. My bag is as follows:

Taylormade Sim2 Max Dr – 9 w/ VA Composite BADDAZZ shaft
Taylormade Sim 2 Max 3HL- 16.5 w./ VA Composite BADDAZZ shaft
      Taylormade Sim 2 Max 3h and 4h w./Accra Tour Z TZ6 M4 shafts
Mizuno JPX921 Forged Irons – 5-PW KBS Tour 90s shafts
      Cleveland CPX2 Wedges- 50 and 54
      Cleveland RTX4 Wedge- 60
      Cobra Nova Putter

This will be an interesting survey. The one comment I would make is that I think it makes too many assumptions on what your bag makeup is. As an example, because my hybrid/irons set has such strong lofts, I actually don’t carry any Fairway Woods, and instead go with two gap wedges to smooth out the progression in my bag. I appreciated the survey accounted for having “0” of something in your bag, it didn’t seem to provide an opportunity to identify any clubs the survey didn’t account for.

Being 65 my bag is in constant disarray.. Used to be as good as a plus 3 but now struggling to maintain a 2 handicap. Being lefthanded we don’t have as much to choose from and have to special order many times. Not to get on a soapbox but I have posted many times how I do not think clubs transition from the indoor hitting area with trackman or foresight to the golf course. I have been right many more times than wrong. Personally I think it’s the physics and math involved with the calculations, be careful. I have gone to regular shafts and have a conundrum and seem to struggle with uncertainty about what I need to play better. It’s the worst time of my golfing life and to be honest, I am thinking about hanging it up as I can’t accept mediocrity.

I am getting older also and it does bring its challenges. That said, golf gets us outside in nature, with fresh air, and great scenery. It provides a place of serenity and allows us to get some exercise. The challenge golfing presents as we get older is familiar but also different. It’s become more of a cerebral game instead of a power game. But new challenges are good as they keep us on our toes and allow us to continue to evolve and grow. Many things are better when we were 18-20, but I’ll be damn if I’ll give those up (if you get my drift). Carpe Diem!

My iron set is not traditional, but it works for me. I have 4-7 iron 2019 Titleist T200 with 8-PW Miura CB 301 bent to match lie and loft of the T200. I also haven’t hit my 4 iron in over 2 months on the course. I practice occasionally with it, but I usually find myself punching out of trouble with my 3H or preferring to take more club and hit a controlled hybrid shot than muscling a 5 or attempting to make solid contact with 4 on my first swing with it. Anyone else have a club that is in their bag that they have no trust in but just don’t want to take out?

My 5-wood. When I hit it right it’s an amazing club. When my swing is a little off though, it’s useless. I’ll usually defer to my 4-hybrid then, which makes we want to put my 3-hybrid back in the bag.

Good survey. I carry different fairway/hybrid makeup depending on the course/weather/my game/phase of the moon. So I threw all the ones I might use in there. Also I use Maltby irons and their milled putter should you be interested.

Also have a mixed bag of Titleist and Mizuno woods and irons both with Cleveland wedges. I keep tinkering a little but finally feeling dialed in. Topped it off with a Maltby Mallet from GolfWorks…. Need to tweak the lie slightly but can’t beat the feel and alignment aid is very clear and inspires a good setup … rolls great and can’t beat the value!!

My bag is in flux this time of year is when I stop keeping score and start to test changes in my bag. Most of the year I have had a 10.5* driver and 15* 3 fairway and a 19* fairway. My least used clubs at my home course have been the fairways so I pulled them both and replaced them with a 16.5* fairway and a 19* hybrid because I don’t like to hit fairway clubs out of the rough.. The longest lasting clubs in my bag are my custom putter from Positive Putters and my Cleveland CG 12 RTG DSG 54*and 58* wedges which I own three sets of and have had them regrooved with raw faces . I spent a couple years trying to find wedges that worked as well for me but nothing has been as versatile for me.

Good Survey, I know you could have asked a ton of additional questions. Thank you for keeping it brief while collecting good information. Would be interested to know what the average age of clubs are and if people intend to replace soon. Get an idea of when the avg golfer is refreshing clubs.

Thanks for gathering insights regarding your reader’s bag makeup. It will help you understand your reader base better. Something of interest but not captured by your WITB survey- type and manufacturer of the shafts installed by club category. For example, how many respondents use graphite shafts in the irons &/or wedges? How many respondents use steel? And what shaft brands are most commonly installed for each? Finally, what flex? Shafts are such an important part of club performance that I would think it would be worth capturing in a survey like this. Maybe a separate survey is worth considering in the future!

Great point about the (iron) shafts. Guys, how could you possibly miss that?

Otherwise, not bad. Annoying to fill out that no, I don’t carry an 8 hybrid. But hey, if you doing a “what’s in the bag” survey, isn’t the goal to find out, “what’s in EVERYBODY’S bag”, Not just the single digit folks out there?

Will be very interesting to see what others have in their golf bags. Would have thought one question would be about a split iron set. I currently play GI irons on the higher irons and players irons in my scoring clubs – I’m sure others do as well.

Took the survey.. But right after I answered “Other” for brand of Lob wedge (I play a Snake Eyes Forged, it’s awesome) an error message came up and required me to start from the beginning again. It was no big deal, as my answers had been saved so I was able to quickly click through them. Just an FYI for you guys at MGS.

A waste of time. Really, we have to actually say “None” to a #8 hybrid instead of that being a default. Early the survey says to not call a JAWS wedge the same ‘brand’ as Callaway, which made no sense in the structure of what was asked. Some courses I carry a strong 3 wood and some not. A poor survey.

I carry an 8 hybrid. In fact I carry all hybrids from 3 to 9 all but the 9 Callaway. Since ditching my irons for the hybrids my scores have dropped from mid 90’s to mid 80’s so I’m happy with my decision.

for those inquiring minds after playing a set of Karsten irons for 7 yrs I tried and got fitted for a set of Apex DCB, I thought I played my Pings great but can’t believe how much better the DCB’s are, I don’t really hit them any further but my target has gotten a lot smaller. It’s a lot easier playing fairways and greens

Regular lob wedges come in a variety of lofts, usually starting around 56 degrees and approaching 60. While those above 60 degrees are rare, often up to 64 degrees, they do exist and are referred to as “x-wedges”, extreme lob wedges, or ultra lob wedges
