These A7 irons are the best I have ever played. I had them in my golf bag last two years but had to get them back after getting the Redlines. Got a great deal on the irons…so I was sold on playing them again. I currently play the irons with the Redline hybrids…and they seem to work very well together. I am seeing truer distances with my irons and I feel like I am gradually more in control of my game. Previously I found a huge gap with the 5 iron and 6 iron, but now that isn’t so much of an issue.

I am sure that as my total swing improves the distances will improve as well. Adams did an awesome job with these irons…I also have the #3 hybrid and look to add the 4, 5, and #2 hybrids in time. Also looking to get the A7 or Watson gap to lob wedge. Looking forward to some great golf in the weeks and months to come. I will definitely be ready for competition when the time comes! Adams Golf really did great with the transition #5 iron and 6 to pw will have the feel of player irons. See where my game is in a year from now!

Just a further update. I am playing the Super S 3 and 4 hybrids. I have a feeling I won’t need a 5 hybrid as I have plenty of length with the A7 5 iron. Again thanks Adams Golf! I will be a fan forever!

I think Adams blew it when they stopped taking custom orders for the A4’s. Best looking clubs they made in my opinion, got excellent reviews and one year later they stop promoting…go figure. They should have done the a7’s in the same design and upgraded the hybrids.

Actually I agree to disagree. As much as I once thought I would be an Adams A4 forged fan…I never really was. I have always been big on traditional cavity back design so the loss with the A4’s is a no brainer for me. If they would have made them in forged it would be a crapshoot if I played them or not. I beg to differ in that the A7s are the best looking clubs in the A series for game improvement and their progressive iron design won me over. I guess one man’s pleasure is another man’s poison! Congrats Adams…now I am playing with precision!

If the yellow line on the back of the clubhead bothers every one so much why not just take a sharpie any color you choose and color over the unsightly yellow and forget about it! I don’t know about you but my primary focus is not the back of the club but on the face of the clubhead at the address position.

Great thread. I stumbled across the A7’s recently when surfing for my next set of irons and was immediately intrigued by the look and claims made by the manufacturer. I don’t actually mind the yellow and the overall look appears appealing. I say appears because i am yet to see them in the flesh. I have spoken to a few local West Aus retailers about these irons and if they will be stocking them and to my surprise only one in four stock Adams gear, the rest not interseted at all. One retailer even trying to swing me over to TM Burners, maybe they offer better kick backs, I mean incentives. I have tested a few models from various manufacturers in recent months, TM Burners, Callaway X22, Callaway Diablo, Cobra S9, Wilson Staff DI9 and all of them would be OK but not necessarily better than my current clubs, so no deal. Looking forward to having a hit with the Adams a7 when and if they finally arrive West. I was interested and a littel excited by Denny Watkins comments above. Cheers

Thanks mygolfspy. What would be the advantage of forged irons? I assumed they were more suited to the better player??

      mygolfspy

Not always. And that answer is a tough one because not every forging is the same as well as not every iron is the same. But if you took the same iron and made it in cast and in forged you would feel a softer feel at contact from a quality forging. Look into some Mizuno forgings if you are looking for a forging for a higher handicap. They make incredible irons year in and year out.

The Adams A7 irons have a more traditional look at setup compared to the Adams A2OS, Adams Idea and Callaway X-20, all of which have more off-set and all of which I have owned. The A7’s look very good at address and the feel at impact is very sweet. I would say I hit a club less now than before. The 3 and 4 hybrids are really nice and have a very good feel at impact. The Adams A7 irons are by far one of the best clubs I have ever hit.

      I’ve a 5.5° 9032LD, which is a lower lofted version of the 9032LS and it’s a phenomenal club!

I’d say I only gained a few mph in swing speed but my smash factor improved from approx 1.46 to 1.48 if that counts for anything. For a club marketed for distance I was most surprised with was how straight it was on mis-hits!

With regards to the looks I’ve had 13 drivers in the past 2 years and demoed everything and nothing comes close to how great this looks at address.

Unsure about the A7’s, the offset and thick sole puts me off a bit.

any opinion on going with stock VooDoo NV 60g or no charge 70g? Same shaft only the 70g is about 8g heavier with less torque. With 115 mph ss/1.1 handicap I’m told I’d benefit more from the Xflex 70g over the Xflex 60g, do you agree?

      thank you!

      DrJ

Bill, first I recommend getting fit for both. If this is not possible the following info may be useful.

The GolfSmith Europe catalog (http://www.golfsmitheurope.co.uk/gscatalogue.htm) page 109 gives the recommended swing speed for the VooDoo XVS6 (60g) at 105-115mph vs the XVS7 (70g) at 105-120mph. Even though the VooDoo VS (version on Golfsmith) is the “little bro” of the proper VooDoo NV version, the heavier shaft on the VooDoo NV should be more suited to slightly faster swing speeds also.

“From my experience” the heavier shaft should provide slightly more stability, a slightly lower launch angle (~0.5°) and a fraction little less spin as the shaft will not kick forward as much through impact. It could also lower your swing speed by maybe 1mph but this should hardly be noticeable and may be made up for by the better launch conditions. Note that I’ve assumed your spin is high and you’re looking for lower spin, hence the choice of the LS (Low Spin) head.

The heavier shaft should also provide a slightly more consistent connection (better smash factor) and be more durable and be less prone to breaking.

Since your a great player (1.1) then I assume you’ll be even lower in a few months then I would assume accuracy is more important that the few inches you may lose by using the heavier shaft.

Something I would recommend is asking about shaft CPM’s as this is a more accurate measure of the shaft stiffness and allows you to compare stiffness between different manufacturers and also shaft weights. If you really want consistency considering having the club SST Pure’d (http://www.sstpure.com/sstpure_study_08.pdf).

Bottom line if you’re getting a new driver, get fit and find out your launch numbers. Oh and never trust what any “one” person says on the forums, blogs or anywhere on internet (even my post). Always get info from reliable resource(s) both online and offline.

Also try speaking to the guys at sellingerspowergolf.com as they will be able to help you much more than I ever could. They can also do you just about any head, shaft combo you require.

      Dr J.,

By the way, I did check with Sellingerpower Golf as you suggested. Maybe you work for them since their answer mirrored yours-the X70g it shall be! I’m curious though, why doesn’t Adams promote the availability of the 70g in addition to their stock VooDoo NV 60g?

Thanks again, there must be a Dr in the house!

Hi Bill, I don’t work for SPG or have any affiliation to them. I’m just a loyal and customer who is giving them the credit that they’re due. Plus I live in Scotland, so the commute would be a bit much ;-)

Regarding the availability, I’m surprise also but it may just be a business issue, perhaps they had to commit to taking thousands of units from Aldila (especially as they have custom colours) so may want to shift the existing shafts as quickly as possible.

From feedback here a lot of people have mixed feelings about the head colour (personally I love it) so they may be considering a some cosmetics tweaks.

It may also be partly legal as Adams are promoting the club as giving 3-4 mph more speed. A heavier shaft for a less talented player could actually reduce speed speed by a similar amount.

Plus very few people swing it with an above average (PGA Tour) swing speed as you have or are a scratch golfer.

      Cheers, J.

I currently own Adams A4 Irons and the Speedline driver. I would not change to the A7’s if they have the yellow line. It really detracts from the overall look. It changes the look of the irons from classic to cheap. When I see yellow on a golf club I think of Nike. I do not think that is what Adams wants their customers to be thinking of when they look at the new Adams irons.

Regardless of what the driver looks like, if this one does indeed go to market it’s a banger… Have tested it with Adams R&D about 5 times now vs other brands and it’s beyond a doubt one of the best out there. Less spin than the production Speedline AND the A4 and will come with the new Aldila Green Voodoo. As for the irons, will be hitting two prototypes tomorrow 5/12 during another test here in Plano. As for the guy who thought the A7’s would be musclebacks, well those are an all together separate issue (and club) and should be hitting the market soon if not already

Very solid designs by Adams. Love the deep face driver and the design of the irons. The yellow accents don’t both me, and I am older and more conservative than most on this sight. I think it is a nice carry over from the Speedline drivers and woods. If yellow can workd for Mizuno then it can work for Adams. I’d like to see Adams have a unique color accent for each level of player-black for low handicap, yellow for mid handicap, red for high handicap and unique colrs for seniors, ladies and the high tech line. I’d like to see some some specs on the A7 line. Will Adams be offering drver, woods and hybrids in this line? Or will they follow other OEMs lead and have a sepertae line from the irons?

IRONS: I think the over all design of the irons will be great for the mid-high handicapper. The finish and face look good. I really think that these will be a great set that goes up against Ping G10/rapture, Nike Sumo, TM Burner, ect. I believe the look give the mid-high handicapper a more “player” looking iron instead of the hideuos looking game improvements that I listed above. The back cavity looks alright, I agree about the yellow, dont really care for it. I think Adams is on to something here though. I think this will give the mid-high handicapper a traditonal looking players club w/ the benefits of game improvements. I give them an 8 because of the kind of busy back. (pics from address would help though)

Driver: Finally a driver that doesnt look square or triangular, and is not 5 inches front to back. This is what low handicappers are probably looking for, something to give the S9 Pro D a run. Hopefully its low spin. I really think people are going to love it or hate do to the face height. Personally I love the tall face short front to back and short heel to toe. Pics from address would help too. From what I seen though I like it, I give it a 9.

This is cool that they want our $.02 on this type of stuff. LOL If you need some one to demo them give me call.

Forgot to rate the offerings –

Irons – 7 – could be as high as a 9. Looked at the pictures of the clubs w/o graphics. Those irons have a powerful, all business, full of technology look that is hidden by graphics.

      Driver – 9.
As I said – never hit an Adams driver that disappointed me.
Having demo’d most OEM’s, my first leanings would be toward Adams.

Iron shape looks good, although the cavity graphics are way to busy, keep it lean and mean so they have a players look to them. Also if they would give them a satin finish it would add to the elegance of the club. I also like the fact that they don’t have much offset. I’ve demoed the Speedline and it’s a great club, sits and looks fantastic at address but I’m waiting for the Speedline driver line to come out with a adjustable hosel so players can open or close the face and adjust the lie either flat or upright. Every driver I’ve ever hit the toe sits WAY up in the air when addressing the ball.

I am sure these Irons (8.5) play well. I personally see a resemblence to the TM R7 iron but, thats not a bad thing. Honestly, the graphics and font are not good enough for 2009. If it where my company or, my design I would put some effort into the cosmetics. The technology is there but, the drivers (7.5)colors and, font are from the 70’s. The irons should be a different color too. The mustard yellow needs to go IMO anyway!

Well, here is my take. On the irons I would rate them about a 7. I would definitely pick another color to go with since yellow is a big color of Nike. I would try to find another color to put in there or maybe change it up and don’t use a color. The irons, for a mid to high handicap, don’t have a super thick sole, but I kind of like that. I think the thick soles aren’t for everyone.
The driver….well…I don’t see this driver being very aerodynamic and if I am correct isn’t the speedline supposed to help you generate more clubhead speed by reducing drag? If that is the case I see this having a negative effect, but I could be wrong. I would give the driver a 8 overall.

I would definitley five the a7s a 9 out of 10 as far as looks go. Im currently playing Titleist 695 cbs so im not really into game improvement irons but I would put these in my bag. But the driver doesnt really wow me at all, it just looks too blocky at the face, the rest of the cosmetics are pretty cool though I like the idea of aerodynamic tecnology. I’d give it a 6 if they just adjust the face a little it would be more appealing.

Like the basic look of the irons but the splash of yellow weakens the look of them. Would like to see the view from above as personally I like a blade-like profile with all the cavity technology. The relatively wide soles look great and inspire confidence in the player I think.7/10 Looking back I see I am saying the same things as Skip. Driver looks superb – what is behind taking some material out of the bottom half is it really to make more aerodynamic – seems like a hard sell unless there are clear numbers there. Same applies with the yellow on the driver. 7/10

A 6 with the badges, a 9 with out. Is Adams skipping the A5 and A6? These look very similar to the A4’s which look great. I ‘m not a fan of cavity badges on irons that are forged. I’m assuming these are forged since the A4’s are. I think that a clean cavity back with maybe a very small badge like on some of the Ping irons or just stamped and paint fill with one or two colors at the most, like Mizuno’s give a much classier look for a better player iron. I may even order some a4’s and see if they will leave off the the badges all together.

I don’t like the new yellow accents on the irons. I would rate them 9 out of 10 though because I have tried these in the store and believe they are some of the nicest feeling irons out there. The driver is an 8 out of 10 for me because of face-on profile size. It’s just too large for my liking. I do like the idea of an increase in club head speed because of aerodynamics though.

I loved these irons so much I got them in the regular steel after playing them in stiff steel. They are gonna play awesome for me this year! Nothing wrong with the coloring on the irons! Definitely the best irons in the market…have the feel of a game improvement irons and the look of a player’s iron. I am playing them either with the A12 OS hybrids or the Redlines…see which way I go! I am happy enough with my F11 Driver…just need to get used to playing it more consistently!

Nice irons! i really like the look of the cavity on these babies. A very distinctive look that says really Adams all over it. Judging from the soul, they do seem like they might be a little big for a tour inspired iron, but a little forgiveness never hurt anyone. On looks alone, I give it an 7.5-8 out of 10.

The driver however looks rather plain to me. The linear design around the sole is kind of appealing, but the logo is rather boring and the colors do nothing to really grab your attention.. The over all shape of the club seems very agreeable, but there isn’t anything about it that makes me want to purchase it over a Taylor Made, Titleist, Exotics, or Ping. I give it a 6.5-7 out of 10.

Hey Skip – like we said these are prototypes and they could change by the time they hit stores. So if this driver does make it…it might have that blue color. In regards to the yellow…I would agree with you if these were for lower handicap players but these are for the mid-high handicappers that typically like a little color to spice up their set.

The way I read your introduction I got the impression that the irons were “MB” signifing Muscel Back. Yet in your comments you say they are for high mid caps. So I am somewhat confused. However, I agree with previous poster that the yellow is distracting. I will admit I am a purest. I like sleek lines with simple flowing designs. These seem a bit busy to me. I love the design of the A4’s. My favorite iron design right now is the Tite MB’s.

Really like the standout cosmetics of the current Speedline driver and wanted to know why the new version isn;t blue as well. Also, the a7 irons look a good, but the single yelllow line kinda cheapens the look. I’d go with more color or none at all. Add some subtle blue to the badges in the cavity and you’d have cohesiveness with the driver if you make its sole blue. Sole looks really user friendly on the irons though, like the A4’s. I’d give 7.5 out of 10 for both right now. Also would like to see the iron at address if possible. Go Adams, you’re making the best new stuff out right now!
