How do you know what year the golf ball was made. If I buy balls this week can I assume they were produced in 2024?

I feel like this would be much more clear to the masses if the title was “Golf ball QUALITY rankings.” So many people get in the comments complaining about no performance data in this, which isn’t what the ball lab is about.

I will say, Ball Lab has taken a pretty lazy 2024. would have loved to have seen some quality data on the new Tp5 and Tp5X, and the Chrome Tour X!

So glad I snapped up several cases of 2021 Pro V1’s when I had the chance. I had a feeling that they would be great.

Unfortunately, I’m also sitting on several cases of 2016 Vice Pro balls. You win some, you lose some.

Last weeks “Best Ball” article claimed Vice Pro was the best overall buy. This week they are # 30 on your list. WTF dont bother me anymore

That other article was simply pointing out that the ball was on sale and tested well, not that it was the best ball based on some kind of objective criteria. This particular article is simply a result ranking of models that have gone through their ball lab testing protocol which is focused on manufacturing consistency/conformance.

I think whatever ball works best for YOU is the best ball. That list means nothing. Serious golfers are always trying to find a little more distance, spin or accuracy. They do it by buying various brands and playing them for a few rounds. It doesn’t take long to tell them if it’s better or not. That list won’t help.
Example: I play every week with a friend who was a former PGA pro. He uses a Vice Pro Plus after using Titleist Prov1 for years. That ball didn’t even make the list.

Once again most of us are now playing the current issued balls on market. Example I play Chrome Tour 24 with Maxfli Tour ( newest release this spring) as alternative backup( usually colder wet weather). Sometimes on hot widless days I play the higher spin Chrome Tour X 24 which was not rated. So I agree that these results should reflect current market balls.

I am sure they are working on it. Read the ball lab testing protocols and you will see that it takes time to procure the balls to ensure the sample dozens are from different batches not to mention the time it takes to write up the article. They will hopefully get to the major OEM releases at some point.

This is great… but how do I know what year model my ball is ? Is everything on the shelf made this year ? Or is there a way to Find 2021 Pro v1’s as opposed to other year Pro V1’s ?

Box graphics and side stamp can be used to differentiate. Simply Google and you will find plenty of side stamp comparisons identifying the years for ProV1s.

Publish the data. Is there a correlation to swing speed? I agree with prior comments that publishing results for obsolete model balls is not really helpful, with the possible exception of establishing year to year “trends”. Your research is excellent and I rely on your data as my primary source for comparisons. In this particular case it seems like this broad list is just that, a “list” as opposed to a detailed analysis. Maybe I am wrong and future releases will show data and summaries for typical focus sorts such as swing speed, spin rates, launch, etc etc etc – For now we know someone for some reason thinks the 2021 Pro V1 was the best ball made – WHY??

John, this list is for quality, not for distance, spin, etc. They compare consistency, compression, roundness, fidelity to USGA limits, etc.

Also, there is a separate article with ball lab results for each one of these models. This article is simply a ranking summary of what has gone through ball lab over the years to draw attention to the site.

So based on this report, the conclusion is to use older outdated balls no longer available? I find it strange a three year older ball is better than today’s ball. Was also sad to see the Vice balls so far down the list as I just bought six dozen based on recent reviews.

My question, as well. I see the title of the article, click on it and do not expect to see a running archive of 10 years of golf balls tested. What does that help me to do if I go to my PGATSS, Golf Galaxy, etc to shop for balls that are long gone?

Maybe another question…how many year models of a brand’s golf ball should I expect to find on the retail store shelf at present? Is it common to find 5 different years of manufacture balls for say a TaylorMade TP5X if I go to buy a dozen today?

Did you test the PXG ball? I received a dozen from the rep and was told they were manufactured to compete and play along the lines of the ProV1

I purchased the new PXG balls. To me, they felt and performed a lot like 2023 Pro V1. Just my personal feeling about them.

This is great information however, What are my chances of going out and buying a dozen pro V ones 2021 vintage today? I would strongly suggest you also offer a rating for golf balls they can be purchased in the present… Like today. Do the same rating for balls on a yearly basis. I want to know what ball I should be playing today, but it’s also nice to know which golf ball is the.GOAT

Randy, I Google the year, make and model of the golf balls or for recent golf balls you can go on any site like PGA Superstore and click on a ball and it will have pics of all the angles. Then I download the pictures and have made a file/folder showing, for example….Titleist ProV. I’ll have 4 pics of different ProV’s showing the lines or arrows on either side of the ProV. Each new model year the line/arrow are different (and the same goes with almost every brand), and I’ll name the file/pic ProV 2021-22, which the line/arrow point is different from the ProV 2023 line/arrow point. I just saw the brand new 2025 ProV and it has a solid black line/arrow. It wasn’t hard to make the file, it was kind of fun, but just takes a little time. So now it’s interesting when I find a ball, no matter ProV, Chrome Soft, Vice, MaxFli Tour or whatever, I open my Golf Balls folder to see how old they are. I think it’s kind of cool.
