4 New Callaway Drivers Hit USGA Conforming List

It wouldn’t be January…or any other month for that matter, without some sort of Callaway release news.

The company is kicking off 2016 with a flurry of XR releases, including 4…that’s right FOUR, XR 16 drivers; 5 if you count the women’s model.

You’ve got the XR 16 standard…

XR

xr16
*Above image from eBay. Callaway has not yet shipped to retail. Authenticity cannot be verified.

You’ve got the XR 16 Pro…

XRPro

You’ve got the most-intriguing XR 16 Sub-Zero…

XR-SUBZERO

Finally, you’ve got the Long Drive XR 16 LD and all 5° of loft that it brings.

XRLD

It’s a safe assumption that Callaway will continue the XR line as it’s mostly entry-level driver priced in the vicinity of $350.

Assuming all of these hit retail, and even if we exclude the LD model, these offerings would put Callaway’s core driver lineup at a reasonably robust 5 models heading into 2016, which would bring the company even with Cobra.

Is that too much choice?

Why exactly are there so many new drivers?

Callaway has been a great company. I had a composite crown driver where the face caved in… they sent me two new drivers… I like their pre-owned site. The guys that work there are totally professional and have helped me immensely.

There is only two models for sale. XR16 and XR16 Pro. The other two(LD and Tour) are not for sale in stores. Only proffessional use.

Micke, I just went to a callaway demo day at my club and was told the and the sub zero driver will be available for retail april 15. The LD driver is available through long drive retailers like horsepower golf or art sellingers website.

It’s 2016. New XR refresh And counting the LD version is typical media trying to feed an old logic. New clubs are going to come out each year. As long as there are equipment forums there will be a rush for new product. Callaway is being singled out again when most the oems are doing the same product cycles.

At Net Income of $42 million on sales of $800 million (both approximates), Callaway isn’t exactly healthy but it’s better off than many competitors (way better off than Taylormade who continues to lose money in the 9 figure range both of the last two years).

I truly don’t think more driver heads is the answer, especially when technology allows to custom fit with a wrench using adjustments and shaft options.

We will see, ELY’s net earnings have been trending downward…but it really does boil down to technological enhancements year to year.

It is just so you have more options to believe you are getting just the right one for you. Is ever find a modern one you can hit and are comfortable with, don’t let it out of your sight. It’s usually the shaft anyway.

I’ve just put the X-Hot Pro driver into my bag. Yes it’s a couple of years old but goes as well as any new driver. Still deciding on the 6.0 or 6.5 Project X shaft as have two of them.

Until they get actual “out the door” sales price in the $150 range no one will dominate the market. I’m REALLY interested in the new Tommy Armour driver that was reviewed here. I will buy one when it goes on sale for $99. If is as good as the testing reported here it’ll make headway against the rest.

In Australia the retailers can not keep up with all the models. It has become absolutely ridiculous the number of sets of irons, and woods that come out every 4 to 6 months. I do not know what the mfgs are thinking because the average golfer will not and does not change clubs that often. Manufactures need to take a good hard look at them selves. Drivers in the market at $400 to 800 dollars will not survive unless the retail buyer is independently RICH.

      Reply

      Mike

Because in the time since Ping released the G30, Callaway has released the Big Bertha, Big Bertha Alpha, V Series, X2 Hot, X2 Hot Pro, Big Bertha Alpha 815, Big Bertha Alpha 815 DBD, XR, XR Pro, Big Bertha Alpha 816, and Great Big Bertha. Callaway just released drivers less than 6 months ago and now they are releasing 5 more models. So yeah, the “why so many drivers” comments are definitely warranted”.

      Reply

      Chris

You do realize that the Great Big Bertha and Alpha 816 are the “tour” level models of drivers where as the XR line is the more forgiving, game improvement driver? With the wrap around Tour Season, the Manufacturers want to get the higher priced stuff out in the fall so the snow birds can buy it and play it all winter. It’s called marketing.

And G30 released 18 months ago…August of 2014 if memory serves me correctly. Big Bertha/Alpha, X2 Hot/Pro and V series were all out before then…spring/summer of 2014. Don’t forget Ping used to have an i-Series driver, Anser and G-Series driver all out at the same time.

I love the same comments people make “Oh…TM 2.0! I’ll wait 6 months and a new one will be out! Har-har-har!” Trendy, ya know?

It make total sense. They are making two different drivers at two different price points (not including sub zero because I’ve never heard of it or tested it)

There is a better players, and average players multi material driver at higher price tag with all the bells and whistles.

There is also the exact same thing at a “entry level” price tag, without It is a smart strategy.

Also look at release dates. Big Bertha line up is same time as “new” PGA tour season starts in fall. The XR comes out in time for new year when most golfers think PGA tour season starts.

They still replace lines every year on an annual basis TMAG fell apart because they replaced their product lines 6 months in.
