Dustin Johnson’s Limited-Edition 2020 Masters Spider
  • TaylorMade Golf is releasing a limited-edition Spider putter to commemorate Dustin Johnson’s 2020 Masters win.
  • The putter is built to DJ’s specs and features Augusta-inspired graphics.
  • The putter has a MSRP of $499.99 and is available for preorder at TaylorMade online and at retailers today.

This April, TaylorMade will be releasing a special-edition Itsy Bitsy Spider putter to commemorate Dustin Johnson’s 2020 Masters victory. This Masters spider will be built to DJ’s play specs and feature custom aesthetics reflecting his first win at Augusta National.

“Growing up in South Carolina, winning in Augusta was my dream. When that dream finally came true last fall, I was speechless. The win was special for many reasons, as is the putter that helped me get the job done.”

-Dustin Johnson

We all know this is the time the golf market becomes flooded with products inspired by the “first major” of the year in men’s golf. Want an entire outfit decorated with pimento and cheese images? No doubt some company out there wants to make that happen for you. There are just so many goofy Masters products pursuing patrons’ paychecks. This is not one of them.

To me, this commemorative putter seems more legit than some other yellow and green golf swag as it helped DJ earn the bragging rights that come with the green jacket of a Masters champion. DJ put on a putting clinic that week with his impressive number of one-putts and by leading the field in strokes gained putting from six to nine feet (+.902).

Let’s take a look at DJ’s Masters Spider set-up and see what Augusta-themed tweaks TaylorMade has added to celebrate his 2020 victory.

Dustin Johnson’s Masters Spider: The Build

If nothing else, it is pretty cool to see the build specs of this putter.  For me, the greatest surprise is that it is 35 inches. I assumed the 6’4″ Johnson would need something longer. At 370 grams, his Itsy Bitsy Spider is packing a little more heft than normal. Other than that, the specs are all pretty stock.

Just like Johnson’s putter, this commemorative Spider does not have any alignment lines on top.

Dustin Johnson’s Masters Spider: The Masters Theme

The Masters theme for this putter starts with the box. It’s Augusta green on the outside with the inside covered with azaleas and other flowers. I appreciate that the box sets the stage for this being a special collectible.

The theme continues with the head cover. Included with the putter will be the same head cover design that DJ used during the tournament. I love this idea rather than creating a new design. I remember this one being in DJ’s bag during the event so it’s the one that fits the victory theme. The putter itself gets dressed up with a custom SuperStroke grip as well as green accents on the sole and shaft band. Overall, the theme is subtle, keeping with the overall minimal aesthetics that DJ prefers.

DJ Fans Will Dig It

While you may not be interested in this limited-edition putter, it will check the box for quite a few other collectors. Masters fans, DJ fans, Spider fans and TaylorMade fans will all want to add this putter to their collections. Even if you don’t want to buy one, it is a great reminder of how DJ put on a show last fall at Augusta and it pumps the buzz around how he will fare this spring. If he putts like he did last time, that second green jacket is a near lock.

Don’t forget that TaylorMade also released a whole bunch of other Spiders earlier this month. Be sure to check those out.

I think it’s great Taylormade came out with this. I’m biased though, since have the original Spider Tour black with no alignment. I’ve tried three other putters since getting the Spider in 18, and have gone back to it ever since. I really don’t think the putter needs alignment lines, the shape squares itself so well at address and it’s extremely forgiving.

An Augusta inspired putter for a Master’s Champion – well done. I’m not a collector, nor reseller, so not for me, but I like the sentiment. I’m sure the Dustin super-fan’s and TaylorMade loyalists will want one.

Spider putters scratch just looking at them . I played one for a half a season and it
Looked like it had been in my bag for 5 years. Terrible paint job and durability..

Because a product is a “commemorative” item does not make it equal in value to a piece that is truly a “collectors” item. In reality, this putters value is in it’s playability. Just because someone wears a golf hat with a TW logo on it, it’s still just a hat!! And, if it just so happens that DJ’s putter fitting/specs match yours then maybe it’s worth the $500. If, not it becomes a very expensive paper weight!

Commemorative yes, but also limited. And many thirsty people will pay for that word in a couple years. Buy it, shelve it, sell it later for an outrageous price VS the ridiculous ask now.

Congrats again on DJ’s Masters win. It was a truly memorable tournament. But paying $500 for a pretty box and a cool head cover and a splash of green on the bottom of the putter, no thanks. Another cash grab by TM. I WILL PASS.

Nice look but you should notice nowhere on the putter or package do you see the word MASTERS.. The Augusta people are extremely protective of their trademark rights and do not allow any use of the word MASTER(S) for golf. I would not be surprised if the green/azaleas trade dress will not be considered some type of unfair trade issue..

I don’t think anything on that putter/cover would be considered an infringement, they (ANI) have a variety of images, but none that represent flowers, one design with a flower and flag, but it looks like that was refused. The images on the cover look pretty generic.

Dave — There would seem to be no way Dustin would need a longer putter. With the length of his arms I wouldn’t be surprised if his hands hang closer to the ground than yours.

LOL. He does have quite the wingspan.

Yes, a common misperception that taller players need longer clubs. As Big Mike mentioned, it’s the length of the arms that determine the shaft length. Way back in the day Ping used the measurement from your fingertips to the ground in their fitting process.

Agree that $500 for this putter is way overpriced.
