Everyone Asks Me Which Golf Shoes To Buy. Here’s What I Tell Them To Avoid

A few weeks ago, I wrote about my top golf shoe recommendations. People always ask me what to buy and coming up with a good answer can be a challenge at times.

On the flip side, it’s much easier to offer advice in regard to which golf shoes to avoid. There are, after all, way too many “bad” pairs parading around as “good” and I can’t let them make their way into your golf shoe rotation.

Here are three pairs of golf shoes to avoid.

1. NIKE Zoom Victory Tour 3

No matter how much I tried to like this pair, I just can’t. They’re way too narrow (even for someone with a narrow foot like me) and the shoe suffers in stability and comfort because of that.

The traction is good albeit not the best I’ve ever seen. But the TPU bottom negates any of the real comfort of forgiveness you feel from the foam midsole. Not a fan here.

2. Boxto Legacy Love

This is another pair I really wanted to like. I love the premium leather upper and all of the cool details but in the end, the sole is way too heavy and way too stiff. The traditional-style golf shoes are rarely comfortable, in my opinion, and this pair definitely lives up to that.

If you want something in this style, I’d recommend the adidas MC80 any day of the week.

3. Oluaki Wai’alae

Olukai makes the best sandals. When I’m at home, I wear a pair of Oluklai flip-flops 90 percent of the time (much to the chagrin of my wife, who harps on me for not wearing some of my 30-plus pairs of shoes instead).

But they haven’t quite cracked the golf shoe code. I’ve seen a ton of influencers rocking this pair. I just can’t do it. The slip-in heel gives the shoe major stability problems and the traction is non-existent. It is, as all Olukai products are, very comfortable, though!

So what do I recommend?

Of all the hundreds of golf shoes I’ve worn over the years, there are some pairs that I really like. You can read more about that here.

Adidas Tours 2021 & 2022 model years actually dug into my Achilles tendons & left me bleeding on a course. Returned to Adidas in 2024 & have been very pleased

Hard disagree on the OluKai review. I actually put our guy Connor’s shoe collection to shame. As a 54 year old OG “sneakerhead” -hate the term , the most comfortable golf shoe I own is a tie between the OluKai Wai’ale and my Ecco’s. Granted that I live in SoCal and rarely NEED to wear a super grippy shoe , but if comfort is what you want OluKai will not disappoint.

Ditto.. See my post !! Olukai rules ! Shameful of Connor to disrespect them so harshly–may truly turn many away from these terrific shoes.

Connor-you are dead wrong (again)–I have a pair of the special grey embossed leather Linksoul Edition of the Olukai Wai’alae and they are among my favorite, most comfortable definitely most noticed and asked about shoes whenever I wear them. The Olukai insoles were a bit soft and mushy so I replaced them with Superfeet orthotics. I find the traction pattern on the soles to be superior to many of my other shoes. Rather than “do not wear” I would place these in the “go out and buy IMMEDIATELY ” category.

I’ve worn Nike, Jordan, Puma and Footjoy over the years, and they’re all quality products. However, the Adidas tour spikeless are clearly the best I’ve ever had. They are leather, waterproof, durable and with the boost sole layer, extremely comfortable. The X design pattern on the bottom of the sole is amazing for traction-every bit as good as spiked shoes I’ve worn. I can wear these to and from the course and not have to pack any others.

Just donated a pair of almost new footjoy pro-lite. Absolutely horrible grip my back foot kept slipping. Comfortable but sorry footjoy it is back to ecco and addidas as for me, never had a bad pair of either.

I go through 2-3 pairs a year and play about 200 rounds a year. The last 2 years have been Ecco spikeless boom something or other. While they felt great weren’t quite my style. I just got 2 pairs of municipal shoes in yesterday. Will wear them for my first round in about an hour but they look great and felt good on the first try on.

You order 2 or 3 pairs of Ecco golf shoes @$200-$300 a pop and play 200 rounds a yr? When do you work? And what do you do? The WP is strong with this one

I have a bunch of new shoes. 25 MC80s, 25 Codechaos, FJ Traditions Blucher, and I found a brand new pair of Travis Mathew Curator The Legend on ebay, and liked them so much, I bought a 2nd pair to put away for “later”. As is, they were too tight. Once I removed the Curator insole, and replaced it with a G/Fore Gallivan2r insole, they fit perfectly. Help me??!!

FootJoy, Puma and the newest addition, Squairz.
I bought the Squairz for waterproof reasons and to give them a try.
They definitely live up to the hype of grip, roomy toe box and waterproof.

My top three: 1) Payntr; 2) Ecco; 3) Adidas. Choosing which depends on the course conditions and if I walk vs. ride.

Can always rely on FootJoy. Comfort and lasting. Have been wearing them for years. Best fitting shoes I have found since I started play golf in 1984. I lean more towards the traditional styling than the athletic. Guess that goes with the aging thing. Am 78.

I too am a lifelong Footjoy fan. For 62 years they have been the only company to consistently offer a narrow width. Even offered A width for a while. They also offer a custom program allowing you to order a different size for each foot!

I’ve only worn Footjoy’s since I started playing, 50 years ago. Got DNA’s soft spikes for really bad weather and Spikeless BOA Pro SL for all other times, however managed to get a New pair of Mizuno BOA spikeless Wave Hazards , July 2024 , for £59 and was actually amazed by them. Just like the Footjoy’s felt like I’d been wearing them for years straight out of the box with incredible grip especially in wet, muddy conditions. Keep up the great work, kind regards Peter Taylor. I also love Olukai sandals and shoes.
      Very comfortable for me.

And I could not, at all, get into the golf shoes. There was something about the fit that just didn’t work for me. I hope they can work out the issues, because they do make great footwear.
