COBRA DARKSPEED Irons

With a name like DARKSPEED, COBRA’s newest irons for 2024 better be fast. And, with the AEROJET ONE Length and standard irons taking the No. 2 and 3 spots in our iron testing last year, they have a stellar reputation to uphold.

Designed to be both forgiving and fast, COBRA’s DARKSPEED irons aim to make some waves as a dark horse (get it?) in the game-improvement iron category that’s only getting more crowded by the minute.

How does one stand out amongst the myriad of options? The dark finish is sure a good place to start. But the real cool stuff lies under the surface.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new CORA DARKSPEED irons.

Five Things to Know: Top Tech

  • Hollow-body design
  • 924D foam filling
  • PWR-BRIDGE weighting
  • Thinner face (as compared to previous-gen AEROJET)
  • 1/2 degree weaker than AEROJET

Trading Polymer for Foam

COBRA DARKSPEED IRONS

Perhaps the biggest story (outside of the sexy, dark finish) of the COBRA DARKSPEED irons is not the cavity itself but what COBRA filled it with.

While the AEROJET irons featured a polymer insert, the DARKSPEED irons are filled with an ultra-light foam. In addition to saving weight, the foam also creates a better feel and sound.

It’s worth noting, though, that the new foam insert is only present in 4-PW. If you opt for the matching GW or SW, these half-hollow body clubs do not contain any foam. But you probably weren’t expecting that anyways.

Another benefit of the foam is the weight savings. By filling the DARKSPEED’s cavity with foam, COBRA was able to allot the extra four grams of weight to the new and improved PWR-BRIDGE.

Speaking of the PWR-BRIDGE …

Post Alone

Last year’s AEROJET irons also featured COBRA’s PWR-BRIDGE weighting. However, last year’s model featured two weld posts as opposed to the DARKSPEED irons which have only one.

What the heck does that mean? Basically, needing only one post to weld the PWR-BRIDGE in place opened up more flexibility and allows COBRA to add that extra four grams I mentioned to lower the overall center of gravity and (hopefully) make the irons easy to launch.

PWRSHELL H.O.T. Face

COBRA DARKSPEED IRONS FACE

The last big change COBRA made to the DARKSPEED Irons was the thinning of the face. The new PWRSHELL H.O.T. Face on the DARKSPEED Irons is 21 percent thinner than AEROJET.

Couple that with the variable face thickness (designed using AI) and the CNC-milled score lines and the DARKSPEED irons should provide increased ball speed and consistent spin across the face.

Specs, Availability and ONE Length

As mentioned earlier, the loft of the DARKSPEED Irons is half a degree weaker than AEROJET. This puts your DARKSPEED PW at a loft of 42 degrees with a 7-iron loft of 27.

The new COBRA DARKSPEED Irons will be available in both steel (4-PW or 5-GW) and in graphite as part of a combo set (men’s and women’s) with the new DARKSPEED hybrids. And, of course, the DARKSPEED Irons are offered in ONE Length.

It’s worth noting that the standard steel irons are available in right- (regular and stiff) and left-handed (regular only). Pricing starts at $999.

PS: Not willing to wait for the new set? The AEROJET irons are on sale for $799.

      Not bad pricing honestly!
I liked their clubs look when my uncle played them years and years ago. I’ve never tested then. But, this setup looks like a decent offering to the golf gods for slower swingers. One things for sure. Thr murdered look is appealing!
I need everyone to forget about testing the new Cobra Darkspeed lineup please. Yes that’s right, forget about it…

      Forget about it….

      Forget about it….

(I’m attempting hypnosis, did it work?)
