This Popular Health Tracker Just Got A Serious Update

Whoomp! There It Is.

Er, excuse me: Whoop! There it is.

The popular interface-less health tracker endorsed by the likes of Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas is receiving a major update.

Introducing Whoop 5.0. The new device looks nearly identical to its predecessor but adds a few more measurements and tracking capabilities that are sure to make it one of the more useful health trackers on the planet.

As a user of the last version (Whoop 4.0), I can say that the insights I gathered from Whoop about my body gave me actionable data that, in turn, made me a healthier human being.

Whoop 5.0 aims to build upon that success with the addition of a few key features, including:

  • Healthspan with WHOOP Age: Gain insights and guidance on how your daily habits influence your long-term well-being with Healthspan. This innovative feature offers a method to quantify your physiological age and understand your Pace of Aging. Developed in collaboration with Dr. Eric Verdin, CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, Healthspan utilizes nine distinct metrics associated with long-term health to determine your WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging.
  • Heart Screener with ECG: Your heart health, readily accessible. WHOOP now integrates an FDA-cleared ECG capability, enabling you to take a reading conveniently from your wrist at any time and share it directly with your healthcare provider. The Heart Screener is designed to detect indicators of Atrial Fibrillation (Afib), a significant contributor to stroke, and also provides Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications (IHRN) for enhanced reassurance.
  • Blood Pressure Insights: Introducing a patent-pending technology that delivers daily blood pressure insights directly to your wrist. Receive estimated systolic and diastolic readings and gain knowledge about the impact of blood pressure on your overall well-being and performance.
  • Women’s Hormonal Insights: WHOOP extends beyond basic cycle tracking to provide scientifically supported education and personalized insights into how hormonal fluctuations affect recovery, sleep, stress, and performance. Whether you are experiencing menstruation, pregnancy, or perimenopause, WHOOP adjusts to provide relevant information and support.

So what does that all mean?

If you’re like me, you probably wonder why tf you should care about this stuff. The answer is simple. Better data equals a better you. Well, maybe.

As with anything, you have to do your part. But with hundreds of helpful datapoints at your fingertips (or on your wrist) thanks to Whoop, finding little ways to improve your fitness doesn’t seem so daunting.

Last year, I used Whoop to help me get back into lifting heavy weights, which in turn helped me gain nearly 15 mph in swing speed.

If you’re willing to put in the work, Whoop works. If you aren’t, you’re better off wearing a Timex on your wrist.

You can shop the new Whoop 5.0 now.

i had Whoop’s 1.0 to 4.0 grandfathered in from the “lifetime price” on the first which, of course in the modern era, didn’t turn out to be lifetime at all.
they’re neat data gadgets, but not much use to 99% of the population in the end, IMO.

unless you are a legit professional athlete, it will get tiresome wearing the same no-display “watch” to track your biological data to have to read on a phone. and after a few months, maybe even a year, you will come to realize you don’t need this to tell you any given day how your body feels, what your strain is, what you can do for exercise/workouts that day, etc.

i wanted to love it for years and kept trying thru each iteration. and eventually when it’s telling you what you already know every day when you wake up (and if you didn’t know you’ll learn over the course of using it maybe one year, max), you’ll realize it’s wasting space on your wrist and an annoyance to pay as a subscription model….

If I have a 4.0 do I need to buy something else to get the 5.0 or is the update just software related?

“If you’re willing to put in the work, Whoop works. If you aren’t, you’re better of wearing a Timex on your wrist.”

Tons of people (myself included) put in plenty of work and still wear a Timex. Arguing that a stupid activity tracker somehow makes your ‘work’ worth more than mine is stupid. I could just as easily argue you need a silly gadget crutch to make up for lack of discipline or because you were just doing it wrong in the first place. Unicuique suum.

I’m glad that data-based tracking has helped you be more healthy, but this comes off as patronizing at best and lazy filler content (hey golf guys, my Doohicky got a Firmware update, yay!) at worst.

      Your reading comprehension fails.

His comment about Timex was in the context of if you AREN’T willing to put in the work. He didn’t say “if you’re willing to put in the work, don’t wear a Timex”. He said TO wear a Whoop. You can obviously wear a Timex, along WITH a Whoop, if “you’re willing to put in the work”.

And in fact that’s what I may do (once I check out the Whoop price), though my watch is an analog Citizen-brand that I love to wear. I’m pretty sure his argument isn’t that I have to dispense with my Citizen if “I’m willing to put in the work” and get a Whoop. And I included “pretty” just to be nice.
