First Look – 2011 Titleist Pro V1 Prototype

The original Titleist Pro V1 was first introduced to the PGA Tour in Las Vegas in October of 2000. Billy Andrade was one of 47 players to put it into play and ended up winning giving the Pro V1 its first win. Over the years, there have been slight changes to the Pro V1 and in 2003 the Pro V1x was added to the line. It has been 10 years since and Titleist recently debuted the latest generation Pro V1 to the various tours in anticipation of its 2011 release.

They recently tested the 2011 Titleist Pro V1 Prototype ball that some of you might have already received in the mail:

  • It remains a 3-piece design with a large solid core, thin mantle layer and thin cover.
  • Bench testing indicated that the 2011 Pro V1 Prototype has similar cover hardness as the 2009 version and is approximately 5% lower in compression.
  • Initial human testing indicates that it is more durable and stays whiter in appearance longer.
  • Some of our GolfBallTest.org testers also indicated that it is longer than the previous version.

* The new Titleist Pro V1 & Pro V1x are in their new Spring 2011 Update

Independent & Unbiased Golf Ball Testing

GolfBallSelector.com is a member-supported / advertisement-free service. We conduct independent and rigorous testing of golf balls and are brand-agnostic when it comes to our recommendations for each specific member.

In choosing the right golf ball, we believe that golfers should look for a ball that is right for their unique game – and consider trading off objectives such as driver distance, sand wedge spin and feel on and around the green. Golf balls will perform differently for different types of golfers given the golfer’s swing type and their own unique mix of ball speed launch angle and ability to spin and control the golf ball. Pro V balls are design to fail after 3+ holes of play. They scuff easily and after 1 round theme ball will never provide the same flight nor will it be able to be used for a decent put with all those severe scuff marks. As a result, I will continue using and referring my golf friends to the best value golf ball in the market. Taylor Made TP Black At 30.00 per dz. it is a steal.

      Longer drives
      Greenside forgiveness and controll
Durable construction and above all more reliable puts it allows me more confident puts. Lowered my HCP from a 22 to a 14 PROVEN!!!

Prototype was longer, especially into the wind. It felt / sound was harder than the prov1x I play.

I see that the new version has a bigger dimple. I thought it looked like a NIke Juice ball. I will stick to the Bridgestone Tour B330-S Ball. The version 2 & 3 Pro V1 equivilant balls. That ball may have started Titleist down fall with Future Brands. Industry rumor has it that it cost Titleist $5 billion plus past & future royalties over the theft of Bridgestone’s ball compound. Now I think the Pro V’s play like a Rock-Flite.

You are clueless…and it’s “FORTUNE” Brands, not “Future” Brands. $5 Billion huh? You were obviously not a math, economics or golf major in college…then again, you probably never went to college.

Titleist sent me 3 of the prototype Pro V1 balls for testing and after a week or so of on course use, I found that the old Pro V1 felt a bit softer and was actually longer than the new version. I played it side by side with the previous Pro V1 version and the new one never felt quite right to me. The cover was a little more “clicky” off the club face and it didn’t seem to have the same carry off the tee. I’m not 100% sure I would switch if the prototypes became available tomorrow. Maybe they’re still tweaking them, but I’ll keep playing the old Pro V1x’s for now.

The look of a golf ball’s innards is so intriguing to me… I know clubs are complex, but for me, they can be fairly easy to explain. The ball doesn’t really have a lot going on visually, but the chemical compositions of each material used, and the alterations of said chemicals to acheive differing results, to me, is fascinating.
