Golf Driver Setup Versus Golf Iron Setup

The driver swing and the iron swing in golf are not the same. To switch from the iron to the driver, you’ll have to make slight adjustments to your golf swing but many of those adjustments can be made right in the setup. Read on to understand what changes are necessary to switch from a driver setup to an iron setup.

Ball position

Ball position is the most obvious and important change from golf driver setup to golf iron setup.

With the driver, the ball should be further forward in the stance, just inside the lead heel. This encourages more of an upward strike to achieve maximum distance.

Irons are positioned in the center of the stance. Longer irons can be slightly ahead of the center and short irons slightly behind. The positioning of the irons in the stance helps to promote a downward strike and better compression.

Weight distribution

With the driver, start with about 55 percent of your weight on your back foot.

For the irons, you can put 55 percent of your weight on the lead foot or just stay more balanced at setup.

Putting a little extra weight on your trail foot with the driver helps to promote that upward strike you are looking for. Again, for the irons, we want a more downward motion that helps compress the golf ball.

Some players put as much as 60 percent of their weight on their lead foot when hitting short iron shots.

At impact, we still need the weight to move to the forward leg for power and accuracy.

Shoulder tilt

Many amateurs get this one wrong.

With the driver, you want more of a shoulder tilt with the trail shoulder lower than the lead shoulder. This can happen naturally if you load up the trail side with a little extra weight at setup.

When dropping the trail shoulder, make sure your shoulders are aligned square. Some players unintentionally close their shoulder line when applying a little shoulder tilt in their golf swing.

With irons, keep the shoulders level. Tilting the shoulders too much on the iron swings can cause you to top the ball or hit it thin.

Posture and stance width

The driver is considerably longer than the irons so you’ll stand further from the ball and have a wider stance. However, you’ll still want to maintain an upright spine angle.

With the irons, stand closer to the ball with a more compact setup and narrower stance. By moving a little closer, you’ll find you have better control and accuracy.

Start of the backswing

The swing arc with a driver is wider and shallower than that of an iron. You’ll feel more extended in the takeaway as if setting yourself up for a sweeping motion through impact.

The iron swing is steeper. You’ll still want some extension in the takeaway and the arms and body should work together to take the club back. However, you’ll need a slightly less shallow swing arc to encourage that downward angle of attack.

Practicing golf driver setup versus golf iron setup

Now that you have the basics down, it’s time to practice these changes. Although you’ll eventually learn to make these changes naturally from one swing to the next, it’s smart to practice on the range first.

Set up alignment sticks in the shape of a T in your hitting area. One stick will point to your target and you’ll put it between the golf ball and your feet. This is a reference line to make sure you are aiming correctly.

Next, you’ll put an alignment stick directly between your feet, pointing at the ball. The second alignment stick helps you visualize the center of the stance so you know the ideal ball position when switching from driver to iron.

Once you set up your practice station, hit one shot with a 7-iron, then switch to a driver. Alternate like this until you feel you are making the appropriate adjustments from one club to the next. Creating some awareness of your setup will promote more consistency in your game.

Final thoughts

The changes in setup between the golf driver and irons can make all the difference in your results on the course. Spend some time practicing this so you are confident switching between clubs on the course.
