He Shattered The Tour’s Distance Record With A Driver You Never Would Have Guessed

It’s crazy this isn’t a bigger story but we just saw the all-time PGA Tour driving distance record fall quite easily this past season.

Aldrich Potgieter finished the 2026 season averaging an absurd 331.1 yards per measured drive, officially establishing a Tour record.

Prior to this season, Rory McIlroy held the record with 326.3 yards in 2023. And prior to that, it was Bryson DeChambeau (322.1 yards in 2020) who held the top spot.

To put this into perspective, John Daly led the Tour in driving distance in 1996 with an average of (wait for it) 288.8 yards. Three decades years later, that distance would have ranked 148th on Tour and a good 15 yards below average (which is right around 303 yards).

Potgieter is now hitting it more than 42 yards farther than the longest player of that era. Wild!

Obviously, the modern golf ball, driver technology, improved agronomy and launch-monitor optimization have changed the equation. Regardless, it’s pretty impressive.

The 21-year-old South African averaged 336.5 yards while leading the Korn Ferry Tour in driving distance in 2024. He followed by leading the PGA Tour during his 2025 rookie season, averaging approximately 325 yards.

Now he has gone several yards beyond that. He averaged slightly more than 190 mph of ball speed in 2026 which is simply ridiculous.

Potgieter used an unexpected driver to accomplish the feat

Potgieter set the record with a nine-degree PXG Lightning Tour driver paired with a Fujikura Ventus TR Black 7 X shaft. The driver is 45 inches with the shaft tipped one inch and the swing weight pushed to D7.

The Lightning Tour is PXG’s low-launching, low-spinning model intended for golfers with high swing speeds (do we think Potgieter qualifies? Just kidding). It features a deeper face and a more compact appearance than the other drivers in the Lightning family.

In other words, it is not the PXG driver most recreational golfers should blindly purchase because they saw Potgieter hitting missiles with it.

And its performance in our driver testing helps explain why.

How did the PXG Lightning Tour perform in MGS testing?

While PXG might not be the first name that comes to mind for drivers, the Lightning Tour finished a respectable 19th overall among 42 models in our 2026 driver test, earning a score of 8.6.

Its individual scores were:

• 8.8 for distance
• 8.8 for accuracy
• 8.0 for forgiveness

The Lightning Tour produced 251.38 yards of average total distance during testing, placing it comfortably above the middle of the field but behind the longest performers.

Even among our high-swing-speed testers, the Lightning Tour finished only 14th overall in distance.

So the driver used to produce the longest season in Tour history was nowhere close to the longest driver in our testing when a wide array of golfers were involved.

I find this to be insightful rather than contradictory. It is a great illustration of why golfers shouldn’t treat pro golfer equipment usage as a universal buying recommendation.

We tested stock configurations across 35 golfers with different swing speeds and abilities. Potgieter is using a meticulously fitted setup designed for someone producing the aforementioned 190 mph of ball speed. His shaft, loft, length, weight configuration and delivery are nowhere near what the average golfer brings to the ball.

Potgieter isn’t long because he found a magical driver that automatically adds 30 yards. He produces extraordinary speed and has an equipment setup optimized to turn that speed into distance.

At the same time, that doesn’t mean he could plug and play any driver. The PXG Lightning Tour clearly deserves some credit. A driver still has to produce stable launch and spin at those speeds and Potgieter gained several yards after moving from Titleist to PXG entering the season.

The larger lesson, however, is about fitting.

A club that finished 19th overall can become a record-setting weapon in the correct hands. Conversely, the driver that finished first in testing could perform poorly for a golfer whose swing does not match it.

Potgieter’s record is an enormous equipment victory for PXG but it is also proof that the best driver is the one that fits the player swinging it.

And when that player is Aldrich Potgieter, apparently the result is 331.1 yards.

Another lesson? Hitting it far doesn’t mean you will be successful. Potgieter is No. 221 in Data Golf, recording only two top-10 finishes throughout 2026.
