A big box filled with Seed Golf “Loosies” landed on my doorstep last week.
We’ll get to what Loosies are in a second, but I first want to channel my inner Ricky Ricardo as I proudly announce to the world:
I love Loosies.
If you’ve ever wondered why we still package and sell golf balls the way we did in the ’60s, you might find yourself loving Loosies, too.
Just remember, I saw her first.
Who’s “Loosie?”
Loosie isn’t a who, it’s a what. Specifically, it’s an it’s-about-time packaging idea launched for Black Friday by Ireland’s Seed Golf. Seed is one of the more innovative direct-to-consumer golf ball brands out there. Its third-generation SD-01 scored well in MyGolbSpy’s Ball Lab, and both the SD-01 and SD-02 performed well in our 2023 Ball Test.
Seed Golf, like everyone else, sells golf balls by the dozen, packaged in sleeves with four sleeves to a box. That’s a lot of cardboard.
Loosies are, as the name suggests, loose golf balls sold in bulk and packaged in a plain plastic bag.
“The term ‘loosies’ come from my delinquent youth period,” Seed owner Dean Klatt tells MyGolfSpy. “As a kid in Australia, if you didn’t have enough cash to buy a full pack of ciggies, we’d harass the shopkeeper to sell us a single cigarette, or a ‘loosie.’”
Seed is selling two of its more popular golf balls as Loosies. You can get Seed’s top-selling SD-01, a Tour-level, three-piece cast urethane ball, or the SD-15, a two-piece Surlyn-covered ball, in boxes of 50 or 100, in white or yellow.
Loosies are all first-quality balls, the same ones you would get if you bought traditionally packaged Seed balls.
Why Loosies?
Seed Golf Loosies are a Black Friday thing, but Klatt says the concept will be ongoing. Seed doesn’t have “sales” as we think of them since it does offer subscription discounts on its golf balls. Klatt says he just wanted to do something fun for Thanksgiving while also cutting back on all that cardboard.
“Our packaging is recycled, so it’s a little more expensive than normal to print,” says Klatt. “In the US, in particular, we noticed that most of our orders are for five or six dozen. We figured we could cut costs, save our customers some money and cut down on packaging wastes if we eliminated the boxes and sleeves.”
Seed has already sold out of the 100-count SD-01 and SD-015 Loosies in the US, but more are on the way.
The 50-count box of Seed SD-01 Loosies is available on Seed’s website for $115 with free shipping. That’s $2.30 per ball.
And when that big box from Seed shows up on your doorstep, you get to shout in your loudest Cuban accent, “Loosie, I’m hoo-ooome.”
You can’t put a price tag on that, my friends.

Sugar golf balls, specifically the SUGAR CUBE have been doing this for ages in a box of 27. This is nothing new
