It Was One of the Longest Fairway Woods in Our 2019 Test—And a Tour Pro Is Still Gaming It

When you look at the bags of PGA Tour pros, you expect to see the latest gear. But every once in a while, a pro holds onto something older. That’s exactly what we’re seeing from Jhonattan Vegas who’s still gaming a TaylorMade M6 Rocket 3-wood (14°) with a Fujikura Atmos Tour Spec Black 9 TX shaft. While it’s surprising to see a five-year-old model holding its spot in a Tour bag, this one may have earned it.

We tried it back in 2019 . . .

In MyGolfSpy’s 2019 Most Wanted Fairway Wood Test, the M6 Rocket stood out for one specific reason: distance. Though it didn’t walk away with the title of best fairway wood (that went to the Callaway EPIC Flash Sub Zero), the M6 Rocket was quietly one of the longest fairway woods in the entire test pool.

The M6 was especially fast and long across testers with higher swing speeds.

Fairway woods can be a tough fit. Players tend to hang on to one that works, often for years. Unlike drivers, fairway woods are usually hit from various lies, off the deck, off the tee, sometimes even from the rough. If you find one that does it all, it’s hard to let it go.

Want to try one?

Finding an M6 Rocket today isn’t that difficult. We found several listings for $100–$150 used, depending on condition and shaft pairing. If you’re a faster swing speed player looking for a lower-launching, lower-spinning fairway off the tee or deck, it could be an affordable addition to the bag.

Who it’s best for:

  • High swing speed players who need a more penetrating launch
  • Golfers who want distance over forgiveness
  • Players comfortable with a smaller margin for error in exchange for serious ball speed

Final thoughts

We expect to see 2024 and 2025’s Most Wanted winners in pro bags over time, but when you see something from 2019 still holding its spot? That says a lot.

They crack so easily though. Right at the slot edges, if not the face that caves in, especially if you hit them as much as Tour pros do.
He must have had a few backups over the years

I’m still gaming a 7 year old Ping G 3 wood and haven’t found a like replacement for it yet that compares.
