By now, you probably know that one of my biggest priorities is to help you save money as a golfer. After spending almost a year here at MyGolfSpy, I’ve realized something somewhat unfortunate: the golf industry has a funny relationship with discounts.
Major OEMS and “high-end” brands rarely significantly cut prices because, well, they don’t have to. If nothing else, the generally philosophy is that sales cheapen the brand. More importantly, however, within the golfing world, it’s difficult for manufacturers to substantially cut prices because of the R&D and marketing that goes into hard goods like clubs. Consumers, meanwhile, have become conditioned to wait for sales before pulling the trigger. It’s a lose-lose cycle.
Jones found a clever way around it. Instead of discounting specific colors, the company created its Blind Draw program. You pick the bag, Jones picks the color. That’s it. Right now, you can pick up the Trouper stand bag for just $135, a full $180 off its normal retail price. The only catch is that you won’t know which color is showing up on your doorstep.
That’s a big part of the appeal. I’ve owned multiple Jones bags, and I’ve yet to see anyone come away from a Blind Draw disappointed with the color they received. More importantly, Jones gets to move inventory without turning every seasonal sale into a race to the bottom.
Everybody wins. If more golf brands are looking for ways to offer meaningful discounts without eroding the perceived value of their products, they should be looking to follow suit. The Blind Draw isn’t just a great deal. It’s a genuinely smart retail idea.
