The King has arrived and not just in Philly.
It’s been nearly 23 years since LeBron’s NBA debut, more than 17 years since his first MVP, and 14 since his first NBA championship. Father Time is no match for King James.
As he gears up for Year 24, he’s got his sights set on more than a championship in the “City of Brotherly Love.” This month, LeBron and his camp launched his YouTube golf channel, hinting at the game he longs for after he hangs up the sneakers.
To channel my inner Mike Breen, the launch of LeBron’s YouTube channel started with a “BANG” (click the link for five minutes of pure bliss), generating two million views within the first three days and garnering more than half a million subscribers. Considering the fact that James is one of the most popular athletes of all time, that’s not surprising.
Can the channel continue to grow at an accelerated rate or will his on-court success struggle to translate to the golf course?
That’s what we’re here to predict and you might be surprised at our guess.
How big will LeBron’s YouTube channel get?
I’m going to be bold here but I’m predicting that the channel will secure 1.5 million subscribers by the NBA’s opening night and more than two million by the end of 2026. Lofty but completely achievable.
Pretty soon, I believe LeBron will have the biggest channel in YouTube golf. Currently, Rick Shiels has the most subscribers (just over three million) with Bryson DeChambeau just behind at 2.83 million. They are going to get passed if LeBron keeps making videos.
What went into this prediction?
LeBron has 154 million followers on Instagram. If you’re chronically online like me, you understand that LeBron’s fan base isn’t a normal fan base. They’re as loyal as they come.
When LeBron announced his departure from Los Angeles this summer, I saw numerous LeBron fans stating that “their bags are packed, and they’re waiting on standby for their move to LeBron’s new city.” Those who love LeBron truly LOVE LeBron.
While I expect actual golfers to be split on whether they want to subscribe to LeBron, I expect the game to grow through LeBron. This channel isn’t just a golf channel. It’s an inside look into LeBron’s personal life and the lives of those around him. If even 1/100th of his Instagram followers subscribe to his YouTube channel, he hits the aforementioned 1.5-million mark.
Aside from his massive reach, it’s kind of fun to watch the struggle. In the clips I’ve seen up to this point, he pokes fun at himself and others on the course, respects the game and truly wants to get better. He’s all of us in a nutshell. LeBron has nearly all the accolades that basketball has to offer but golf doesn’t care how great you are at another sport.
He’s going to struggle for a while and it’s going to be fun to watch the journey.
Final thoughts
If you’re still doubting my predictions, here are a few comments on LeBron’s most recent YouTube Short that illustrate the dedication that these fans have:
- “The way my king walks is so tough“
- “LeBron, Philly loves you“
- “WE WILL DO WHAT YOU SAY BRON BRON“
- “Sorry LeBron, I was 10 hours late, won’t happen again“
Call them crazy if you must but they know what they like.
There are three types of viewers that will consume content from LeBron:
- LeBron superfans
- YouTube golf fans
- LeBron haters
When you mix those three together, you create an army of views. We might be looking at the best supporting cast that LeBron has ever had and, yes, I’m talking stronger than K-Love and Kyrie. LeBron has his work cut out for him here.
If you’re still on the fence about LeBron and tuning into his YouTube golf videos, here’s what you can expect on the channel.
- An inside look at LeBron’s personality and stories about his career
- Collaborations with other major creators and athletes (hints, point to Bob Does Sports, Rory McIlroy and Kevin Hart)
- The chance to watch one of the best basketball players of all time trying to become an above-average golfer
If any of those reasons seem appetizing to you, you’ll want to click the link below. The first video was titled “The 2016 Cavs 10-Year Reunion Golf Scramble.”
If you’re a fan of basketball, you get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the key pieces from the 2016 Finals run, with plenty of friendly banter along the way.
In 12–18 months, LeBron James will own the largest YouTube golf channel on the planet. Book it.
