ULTIMATE REVIEW – Nike DYMO vs. Taylormade R9

GREAT MARKETING IDEA NIKE…BUT RISKY! (BIG PROPS)

I gotta admit Nike Golf should be commended for their latest marketing move. So what was it you ask? Well…a couple months ago Nike sent MyGolfSpy and lots of other bloggers on the web a SQ Dymo driver for free to review. But there was a small and risky catch on their part…we had to test it head-to-head versus the Taylormade R9.

So why should this move be commended and why is it so risky? Well for one it was an easy way to get the word out about their drivers not only quickly but also for a very cheap price tag. These heads (at cost) are not exepensive for them at all…so compared to running full page ads in golf mags which can run in the range of over $250,000 this was some super cheap advertising for Nike. But like we said it came at a big risk and took some big kahunas on their part…so we commend you Nike! I know lots of other golf companies who wouldn’t touch this type of promotion in fear of failure. If everyone of us after reviewing their product came to the conclusion that the R9 was better…they would be up the creek without a paddle in a big way. Between all the golf blogs out there that they sent these drivers to…you are talking about a major influence on the golfing public.

But…we know they would have never sent these to us without first launch monitor testing both drivers head-to-head before deciding to do this type of promo. With the technology today it’s so much easier to test heads directly against one another. So I am sure they dotted their (i’s) and crossed their (t’s) before calling us and the others.

So…in the end we agreed but told them that we would be 100% honest in our review…that was our catch. They agreed and said they have always appreciated MyGolfSpy’s unbiased reviews and approach…so we took the 2 drivers to the range and to the launch monitors for some 1-on-1 action.

First I should say that I have hit and tested a LOT OF DRIVERS over the years. I actually competed in the World Long Drive Finals and other long drive competitions for a few years…so I have had the unique opportunity to test about every head and shaft combo you can think of. I also used 2 other golfers at different swing speeds to test the (2) popular drivers…this way you can get an accurate view of how these drivers will help or hurt your game.

{THE RESULTS}

(NOTE: every golfer is different and shaft and all other variables will impact your individual results. So these results will vary from golfer to golfer. )

1. DISTANCE

The Nike Dymo STR8 Fit was consistently longer than the Taylormade r9. The Dymo was on average 8 yards longer with all 3 golfers and ballspeed averages were 6 mph faster with the Dymo STR8 Fit compared to the r9. (NOTE: The Nike drivers comes with a longer shaft 45.75″ vs. 45″ so this most likely is the reason for the increased ball speed and distance.) But we did not have a driver with the same length shaft to test so we will have to give Nike the nod when it comes to distance.

WINNER = NIKE

2. LOOK & FEEL

I prefer the look of the Taylormade r9 over the Nike and also the sound at impact. The r9 that we tested was 420 cc’s and carries a sound more typical of what heads felt like 5-10 years ago…which I prefer. Although, many golfers are getting used to the sound that is made by many current drivers which includes the Nike we tested…we were just not a fan. So we give Taylormade the win when it comes to look and feel.

WINNER = TAYLORMADE

3. CONTROL & ACCURACY

In regards to accuracy and control the Taylormade r9 performed better for us. Our shot dispersion (accuracy) was much better although on mishits the Nike performed better. We felt much more confident on hitting a straight tee shot with the Taylormade. This could have been due to the shaft we tested but all (3) golfers at all (3) swing speeds agreed.

WINNER = TAYLORMADE

4. TOOL ADJUSTMENT

This was an easy one for us. First let us say that I have never received an instruction manual for a driver that I played. But that is just what we got with the new Nike SQ Dymo. And where I feel like they did a great job packaging it and designing the tool…they should have known that men typically HATE manuals. I am in the golf industry and agreed to review their driver and still cringed at the thought of having to read a manual to learn how to use another tool and even a headcover. Yes…their are even instructions for how to use the headcover! But we will not bore you with that. The Taylormade driver was not as high tech of a tool but it got the ob done and done without having to spend an hour reading on the range before trying to crush some drives. Like we said this one was easy.

WINNER = TAYLORMADE

5. OVERALL WINNER

Well you would think by looking at the results above that we would be picking the Taylormade r9 as the clear cut winner…but not so quick. We all know that distance trumps feel and sound for the majority of us so it was tougher then you think to choose the winner. And seeing that the accuracy was so close we would have to almost call this a dead tie…but like we said DISTANCE TRUMPS FEEL & SOUND for most golfers. And we are doing this test for other golfers not for our personal likes and dislikes. We just want to give you the data and let you decide.

WINNER = YOU TELL US…WHICH ONE DO YOU THINK IS THE WINNER?

      I know this is a year late but I wanted to see what others thought ofnthe dymo I had inmy bag for so long after reading on the .910 d2 driver…I am curious how many red and white shafts Garry has seen on tour considering I’ve never seen a tour player play a stock shaft in my life…it was def a long and forgiving(and clanky sounding) driver. Was never outdriven by a taylormade…

      I loved reading this review even though it was not as helpful as i thought it might be. Its hard to compare a 460cc to 420cc and 45in to 45.75in. I have to admit that i prefer nike cause it was the first driver (auctually the first non k-mart club) that i bought. So i am going to have to give my vote to nike because of the success i have had with them and the lower cost. However its embarrasing to say that i play a Taylormade Tour Burner. Haha

      It would be best to test a R9 45.75 inches against a dymo. That way all of the specs are the same. This would give the most accurate results. Any way you could make that happen?

      WHAT A JOKE.. Nike can’t get out of its shadow. Whoeve wroter this stone cold lie must work for Nike. Taylor driver stats kick Nike’s ass.. In length and SALES. We sold the Nike drivers on ebay below our cost to get the junk out of our shop. If the Nike driver is so great. Why aren’t they the number one driver on the TOUR? Most of thje dudes playing Taylor drivers aren’t getting paid to do it. Or how about the pros that have NIke – Ping head covers on their Taylor Drivers. That red and white shaft stands out like as sore thumb. I like it when NIck Faldo see it on air and mentions it.. I am sure the OEM’s love THAT

      Actually Garry this was the most reviewed driver on golf sites that I know of. Because Nike sent all of us one tro try head to head against the Taylormade. And 100% of the testers all found the same to be true. And so did the guys on tour. The R9 feels great but major loss in distance for many of them. That is why many of them are not playing them.

      Just because one driver sold more then the other does not mean it is better. Taylormade has better “Hype Marketing” simple as that. And the reason Taylormade is the #1 driver on tour is because they outspend EVERYONE and pay EVERYONE to play them. And you are flat out wrong that most of the guys playing TM drivers are not getting paid…that is simply 100% wrong. If you understood how the deals worked on tour you would see why that driver is in more bags. I am not a big fan of this Nike driver…but when tested on launch monitor after launch monitor they were simply LONGER & STRAIGHTER…PERIOD. And we do not get paid by any OEM to test equipment so there is NO bias here and never will be. MyGolfSpy is and always will remain un-bias in our reviews.

      I guess it’s my advanced years!…I’ve learned the hard way to seperate the wheat from the chaff. I play weekly with a very good golfer that several months ago who brought a Cobra into our “listening area”. I swear, Never have I heard so dismal a sound. But…he hits it great, he apparently likes it (and rightfully so), and we hardly notice it now…I’d hit a ping pong ball with an ironing board if it would get me out there.

      I bought the Nike..after mostly reviewing similar articles comparing these two drivers. I must say I long ago quit worring too much about the “sound and looks”…I want a club that gets me “out and in”. Out the fairway and in the fairway. This str8 does the job. Period. As with so many reviews, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder…meaning that instead of just analyzing performance, reviewers often insert negative thoughts that readers pick up on. Comments regarding looks and sound sould be listed only at the end as “Cons”. That allows readers a chance to begin reading the report w/out any preconceived bias. Just my 2 cents worth. Overall, very good article.

      I agree Doc…Nike sent us the square and was supposed to send us the round version. We apologize for this. In regards to the sound being a Con listed first…I can see where you are coming from…but for many golfers this is an automatic disqualifier. But I appreciate your view.

      I would be curious to see a review of the dymo str8-fit square vs round, and maybe even a re-do of this review with the round version. I tried them both and liked the look and feel of the round one A LOT better. I have not hit the R9 but have hit the R9 460. I liked the round str8-fit better than the R9 460 (which i believe would have been a better comparison), and bought the round str8-fit. I also like the fact that the str8-fit still produces a good shot on off center hits, which i dont hit in the center every time so its a quality i really like. The manual isnt really necessary as it is pretty straightfoward, but nowadays things need to be dumbed down for the masses. I agree the sound is def a different one, but you get used to it after a while. And its one of those things where you will be able to spot other nike users without even seeing them hit haha.

      I think Taylormade is a little angry with nike. im subcribed to their news letters and one email said that “a certain brand was making false acqusations (not sure of spelling)” and that they were making tweeks in the specification of the club to fit their acqusations (spelling again).

      i don’t agree with what you wrote mygolfspy. i feel that for most people (at least for all my friends) that look would triump over a few yards of extra distance. I would definitley get the r9 instead of the dymo. the r9 looks better, and i love its smaller head. i’m a nike fan and im starting to branch out to different brands cause of the new equipment they cameout with this year.

      I don’t understand how anyone can find the sound of Nike drivers to be appealing. The sound literally hurts my ears when I’m hitting balls on the range next to someone with a Nike driver. Still interesting to see that the R9 outperformed the Dymo, not that I’m surprised. I’d still take a Titleist D2 or D3 over both of them. =)

      One more vote for R9. I went to the local pro shop, picked up the Dymo, and put it back on the rack without trying. The look at address hurts my eyes.

      The R9 is solid, but not better than the R7 to me. The R9 fairway wood, though, is something else.

      Wouldn’t it be a better fight between the Dymo round head and the R9? Since feel/sound was a factor I found the round ead to be MUCH better then the radical square head. But it is what it is, I guess the next ultimate review should be the R9 460 vs Str8 fit Dymo round vs the UPCOMING nickent 5DX

      I strongly believe that from the distance aspect the R9 got the short end of the stick in your test. That added distance is largely the result of the extra inch and a half shaft in the Nike. Otherwise distance wise I gotta believe they would be similar (thank you for pointing out the dispairty). That being said I can tell you I hit the R9 at our club and it was a good 10-15 yards shorter on several drives that I used it in in actual play. I would never buy it because of the distance loss. Have not hit the Nike in true playing conditions but know from hitting it in the net that I could never own one due to the sound.

      I agree with CJ on this one, I would rather be a few yards shorter, if I am comfortable with the club in my hand, distance is one thing, but look and FEEL is really important, so this goes to the R9

      Thanks guys for comparing the two. The sound of the Nike has always caused me to cringe. That sound should be left for the recreational softball field. The only problem with the TaylorMade is that if you buy one today, they will come out with a new driver the next month…so pick your poison. Did y’all have the drivers setup to neutral or were they modified in anyway?

      No problem TX…it is similar to the softball bats but remember when Titanium came out people were not used to that either. So only time will tell if this is the sound of the future. Although I dont think it will be.

      You have the two club heads reversed in the final picture. Up to that point, the Nike was on the right and the Taylor on the left.

      Well, this is one interesting way to advertise your equipment. I must say that I agree this move could be either the greatest move ever or the worst ever. While it looks like you gained distance with the Nike, it is hard to go against looks and feel. If you don’t particularly like the feel of a club it is hard to use.

      I personally think it was a great way to advertise a product. And the majority of golfers would give up sound and feel for distance. Maybe we should do a poll on this to see some numbers.

      I think you should. I am a feel player and wihile distance is great if it doesn’t feel right then I will not play well with a club.

      Wow great article I totally agree with you guys on this I just hate the feel at impact of the dymo compared to the r9. Eventhough I’m a huge fan of nike I would have to say I was disapponted with the dymo compared to my SQ 5000 and would deffinatly give the R9 the gold on this one
