Phil Mickelson Tests LAB Putter at LIV Tournament

Say what you will about Phil Mickelson—and you can say a lot—but he isn’t boring or conventional.

Neither is the putter he has in the bag during practice this week at LIV Golf’s Jeddah tournament.

The six-time major champion has been spotted testing the LAB Golf DF3 putter, one of the most striking putters in golf. The model recently became available to consumers.

Mickelson’s DF3 is 35 inches with a 71-degree lie angle (press #2, 3-degree grip, TPT shaft).

Mickelson has been partial to blades throughout his career, including when he won the 2021 PGA Championship using an Odyssey “Phil Mickelson” blade prototype with a SuperStroke Pistol GT Tour CounterCore grip.

But the LAB DF3 is a stark departure from a blade. LAB putters, which have garnered a cult following, can be described as “absurd” or a “pretzel on a stick” due to the abnormally large head—but there is no doubt they work.

The DF3 is a smaller version of the DF 2.1, which was LAB Golf’s flagship putter. Despite the reduced size, the DF3 still has low torque to avoid twisting at impact. There are eight sole weights along the wings that help prioritize stability through the stroke.

Mickelson’s putting had let him down late in his PGA Tour career. He could manage no better than No. 116 in strokes gained putting over his final three full seasons on the tour. It’s hard to tell how he has performed on the greens since he moved to LIV given the lack of stats, but it would seem he is looking for a spark.

PGA Tour player Garrick Higgo also has a LAB DF3 in the bag. Will Zalatoris, Grayson Murray and Byeong Hun An are LAB putter users but have different models.

We’ll be on the lookout to see if he puts the LAB DF3 in play this weekend in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

LAB has some intriguing theories. I’d be interested in trying one but balk at the price. $450 for a basic, unfit putter. $560 for some customizations. If you want to change the alignment “line” to a “dot” + $25. To put an $8 counterbalancing weight in the shaft + $75. Custom shaft + $400. Add tax and shipping. Then wait 6 weeks. Maybe Costco will come out with one next year.

If you’re near a club champion, you can try one there. I did and realized how stupid easy it is to stroke that putter, the hard part is getting used to not trying to manipulate it with your hands, trust the putter, and just swing it. They feel like nothing I’ve ever tried before and I would love to have one. As for the price, they are expensive but anything custom is expensive, but it is built for you, no one else. I mean how much would you spend on any custom club? And this is the only one you use on every hole.

Second all of the above. I have a DF2.1 which I customized through LAB’s outlet site. The putter will pay for itself in your skins group.

I tried out Phil’s putter before I knew was using it. I laugh at it’s looks, I said to myself there is no way I’d put it in my bag. Then I tried it, it felt like all my putts went straight. If you can putt straight you can make three or more putts a round . The money putts 6 to 8 footers. It’s still ugly

I had the exact same putter, same specs in oil. Me for a seat, then, last year, couldn’t make a putt with it. I felt that since it was such a heavy weight, I had issues in adjusting to the different green speeds that I play on. Can’t tell you how many putts I left short last year, so I had to sell it off.

How could you have had this putter that just released this year? I think you’re mxing up the DF3 with the DF2.1.

That’s correct, I looked at the article without my glasses on and just saw the basic putter in the same shape as mine.

It’s a DF3 for sure, much smaller than the DF2. The hole is also the dead giveaway. They included that hole to make easy to pick up the gimme putts.

The lack of torque usually makes the putter feel lighter. You should spend more time in the gym!!! Get more swoll to lift those heavy putters.

Dude, I’m about as good shape as anyone’s going to be at my age. Believe me, it had nothing to do with workouts!

maybe Mike didn’t have his glasses on when he was reading his putts as well and lost depth perception. Ha

Mike, you probably have the DF2, correct? The new, DF3 is smaller and lighter.

Took me a while to adjust to the DF2.1. Great drill is to putt with your thumbs off the grip to avoid manipulating the putter.
