New PING Patent – Could Change The Face Of Irons Forever!

One-Step Ahead of the “Golf Police”

For the most part grooves on the faces of irons haven’t changed all that much in recent time. Yes…there are a couple different shapes that manufacturers used to try an put more spin on the ball with but for the most part little has been changed. And the USGA is hoping to keep it that way.

The USGA has been trying to put out all kind of fires of late. They don’t want drivers hitting shots too far, heads being abnormally large, too much loft being on wedges (coming soon), shapes of drivers helping you hit more fairways or face grooves being to big and sharp. The new groove rule they announced will take effect in 2010.

But it looks like Ping is already one step ahead of the “Golf Police”. This new patent application was published yesterday. See below for the changes:

These groove designs are interesting. I always thought that the groove’s cross-sectional geometry had to be symmetrical (only affects fig. 11), but who knows anymore.
I do agree that the USGA is being ridiculous with this new rule. The game is hard enough and it’s fun to hit a wedge shot that lands behind the hole and spins back. That is what people want to see. Besides, the manufacturers will just find a way around the rule, just as ping has. I’m pretty sure many people can barely afford to play as it is, and this new rule would require new wedges (eventually). The USGA is really just killing the game of golf.

Just a question. Are irons forged and then milled or are they cast with those grooves. US Patent laws allow you to patent anything and everything and it seems a dimension change isn’t enough to issue a patent unless their process is unique. I guess it’s an “improvement” but to only those who can swing :)

Per my club pro they are making it more difficult so average civilians will be more frustrated and scare away more players in a sport that is already loosing interest. By changing the rules on equipment for pros and amateurs is ruinning the sport. Now we aren’t playing the same game. What they are doing is wrong. Spinning the ball and making great shots draws interest to the game. When they make a sport so difficult to play well like Hootie did to Augusta is detrimental. Who wants to watch players shoot par or above, its cool to see guys birdie and eagle and show the talent they have. My oppinion is the CEO of the PGA should be paid maybe a million dollars not 4 which is more than many of the players who excel. They should hire me to make logical decisions that they aren’t doing. Note that Augusta is quietly making the course less Tiger proof so the scores will be better this year. Note that they can’t admit that because of the legend of Hootie. This will be done thru the years gradually to make it fun to watch and keep older players coming back. So PGA, keep the grooves and let everyone spin the ball. Just make the ruff a little tuffer and the fairaways a little narrower if you need to keep the big boys in check. Do not change our equipment, we want to play the same game as Tiger and Phil and Anthony etc…….

My God, good thing I didn’t order those 4 backup zip groove CG12’s! A pro told me that the game is hard enough, why does the PGA try and make it frustrating for us amatuers. Who cares if the pros can spin a wedge out of the rough, its fun to watch!

They’re just trying to get the same exact results from the soon to be illegal u grooves in other and newer ways that would conform.

I’ve thought of these ideas before but never knew no one had ever tried to do it. I remember maybe snake eyes, golfsmith, or maltby have M grooves and I just thought those had grooves shaped like an M like Fig. 2 and 3.

Fig. 9, 10, and 11 interest me the most.

Hmmm…I don’t remember that iron from Golfsmith with the M grooves. You remember what it was?

Is there any information about how these new patents/designs are supposed to help the golfer. It was my understanding that the soon to be illegal square grooves help because of the larger groove to hold the debris along with the sharper edges to grab ahold of the ball to add more spin. The new Ping Designs are interesting, but I’m wondering more about the science behind them and why they would help. Some interesting designs for the grooves though.
