SPY PICS! – TaylorMade M1 Driver

You may have seen TaylorMade’s recent promo warning us to expect the unexpected (if not, see below), and now you’re just a click away from seeing what the unexpected looks like.
TMM1

Was that unexpected?

We’re being told, and the pictures would seem to confirm, that the new driver has a crown that’s at least partly made from carbon fiber. That’s a bit unexpected given TaylorMade’s staunch devotion to all-titanium construction.

Sources who have seen sole pictures tell us it’s stamped with M1. We believe that is the name of the driver.

TMM1-2

Another departure from the R-series nomenclature would be unexpected too.

The most notable bit of visible technology is what, I suppose, you could call a T-rail weight system. A forwardly placed (SLDR style) weight allows for left/right shot shape correction, while a second track weight allows the center of gravity to be shifted between the front and rear of the club. Conceptually, think Mizuno JPX-850 or Cobra FLY-Z+.

Given TaylorMade’s firm stance on the benefits of low/forward CG, any shift in its philosophy away from forward CG in favor of higher launch and higher MOI, would also be unexpected.

TMM1-3

The Unconfirmed Rumor

We’re hearing the M1 could offer one more piece of unexpected technology; an actual first in the industry.

We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.

Ok . So for several years I have used my golf spy as a source for some of the “BEST” objective, and sometimes, subjective information on a host of topics from shafts to drivers, putters and I feel that most people posting a comment on the site probably feel the same way. With that said I am finding it harder and harder to locate GOOD objective feedback. Too much subjective information and DARE I SAY amusing, but stupid feedback.
The goal of this forum is to state your point and have it make some sense. If I read one more post about how TaylorMade ( or any other manufacturer for that matter) has reduced the cost of the last model one more time, and how much distress this caused I will get nauseous.
At what point did the reduction in the price of any high tech club not be met with enthusiasm if that club was right for you?? The reduced cost is a positive thing! It works in your favor.
Do your research, know you spin rates, launch angles, test side by side with the club that you trust the most. Then it will make sense. Once you know what is BEST for you, then you should never make an uninformed decision. If the new model is too close to your current club stay put. It should never matter what price you paid, you paid what you thought it was worth. If it works it is priceless. If it doesn’t you made a bad decision because you did not have the information that you needed. many of you posting are really good a knowing what your numbers are, and for those who don’t, thank GOD somebody is looking to create the next best thing. You may be able to buy yourself a game yet.
Another point: Last years/weeks model in the hands of someone who has never used it. is a NEW CLUB in the hands of that individual. Make sense?? I have played an R7 and R7425cc 7.5 degree Quad 4 since they were launched. For those of you that do not know, that club was launched in 2004- 2005. Nothing has ever been able to match the characteristics of that club, FOR ME, until now. PING ( no), Titleist ( no), Nike ( God no), Callaway (not since the Big Bertha 8 degree), Cobra (no). All that has happened over the past ten years is that the drivers got bigger and bigger, shaft lengths got way to long for the average golfer to handle ( 43-44 is optimum for those of you who don’t know), Swing weights got heavier and heavier. My spin numbers kept going up the more they designed the next best thing. It just did not work for me and my research told me that the numbers with my current club were better. No need to change, but I always looked. Tested the waters. We all know that manufacturers are continually pushing to help the average golfer find utopia. Bigger faces touting lower MOI and Low COG, bigger sweet spots and 500 shaft options are all the rage. You all probably bought into this, and quite frankly you probably all love it. I know I like the science of it, but it can be overwhelming. At some point you have to make an informed decision.
I agree that all the manufacturers rush to design the next greatest thing, on that rare occasion you need to be ready to check it out. Many new designs may actually work to the detriment and at the expense of the better golfer. Everything it seems is for the high to mid handicapper, and very few options to help the better player. This is in order to appeal to the masses coming to the game due to the “Tiger Factor”. Everyone wants to play golf today whereas when I started it wasn’t the coolest thing to do.
Those of you posting on the M1 as just another roll out and posting that TM fooled us with the, R1 ,R-11, R-9 and R-15 etc. etc.are completely misinformed. Sorry. It is simple mathematics. Carbon fiber weighs less than Titanium, Titanium weighs less that steel. I actually hit the original TaylorMade metal driver when it came out it Looks today like a baseball on a stick compared with todays tech. 25 Grams of discretionary weight that can be moved forward backward left or right due to the incorporation of a carbon fiber crown instead of Titanium has never been done. IT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE LIKE THIS BEFORE. By the way those other composite drivers that you keep harping on TaylorMade about,(as though they stole somebodies lunch money ,,,The ERC etc.), Last time I looked they had NO adjustability. or did I miss something. the only adjustments you could make were shaft length , Grip thickness and shaft flex. NOT THE SAME THING! Henry Ford offered one color on his model T. TaylorMade gives you almost an unlimited number of options in one package and yet some on this forum bitch like they were just shot .Would you prefer to go back to clubs that cannot be changed and or customized in order to help you minimize your most prevalent swing flaw? First of its kind PERIOD. Look at it get it fitted to your swing and see if you think it is better than what you have. If yes, DO it, if Not then stay put until the next iteration comes out and stop bitching. Nobody looses except the individual who does not keep his mind open to new technology. When the time is right you will know it. If not be prepared to have the guy your playing against in your club championship or $5 Nassau stroll up to the tee box with his new M1 driver. I want you to remember what your reaction is when your buddy pulls the head cover off and steps to the first tee box and hits the first ball with his” next generation rip off TM club” ( because people at TM are bad people who reduce the cost of there previous models, and they roll out far to many models,,,,, BLAH BLAH BLAH), and honestly ask yourself, do you feel the same way, or do you want to ask him to let you hold it and feel it for yourself. You know the answer. When he consistently hits it 20 past where he normally hit it in the past, he will have done his homework. That’s were the rubber hits the road . The next rubber will be you running to the pro shop getting fitted. Any advantage you can get that works better for you, is the best investment you can make. It never hurts to look. Nobody is forcing you to buy anything.

The M1 430cc 8.5 degree with Aldila silver 70 stock shaft. 430cc spins considerably less. Made to appeal to the better player who can consistently find the center of the club. I hit the 460cc head and spin numbers were the about the same as my R7 so no improvement. Therefore did not bite on it. Looks are great but no advantage for me. Very forgiving on mishits and in my opinion a better option for 10 handicaps and up.
The 430cc M1 at 8.5 degrees is the FIRST CLUB in ten years that produced 300-400 less 1700-1900 RPM spin and 20 yrds additional carry with a 14 degree launch angle ( all versus the R7 7.5 degree driver which has been in my bag for 10 years .I hit 20 balls with the R-7 and averaged 275 carry 290 roll out. I hit 20 balls with the M1 430cc 8.5 and averaged 285 carry and 310-320 roll out. Many had spin rate around 1600-1700. Never saw this with the R7. My R-7 7.5 degree driver with a low launch Grafalloy Pro60 lite shaft 68gram, average is always around 2200-2400 RPM at 105 club speed and 14.5 launch. On center hits were to say the least amazing with the M1430cc. When you don’t catch it square then nothing remarkable same as the R-7 , but it is impressive and OBVIOUS when you do square one up.
Average Club Speed average went up 2-3 MPH ( from 104 to 107mph) with the M1, versus the R7. Interesting to note that my R7 425cc is 44″ length and the M1 is 45.5″. I Would have thought that the weight difference in swing weight of D1 with the current R7, versus D-4 with the M1 that the club head speed would go down. The added length may be the main factor. But I believe that the weight redistribution in the M1 head is the main reason . M1 is generally a lighter feeling driver, but I play lighter shafts as a general rule .
So I have opted for the Aldila Silver Rogue 60 MSI110 shaft at 45″ not at the stock 45.5″ This is a 68 gram shaft, and with 1/2″ LESS than standard length. I know it will bring me close to the D-1-D2 swing weight that I am comfortable with. The combination of stiffer tip Rogue silver S flex 60(68Gram) and its lighter weight, versus the Silver 70 ( 78gram) stock offering will reduce swing weight which may enhance swing speed even further. For many this may be too light and I understand this. However for me this will lower swing weight ( shorter is lighter), it will also make the driver more accurate for me (shorter drivers are more accurate as general rule of thumb) the shorter length and lighter shaft at 68 gram vs. 78 gram will reduce the overall swing weight to D-2 from the stock D-4 which the club comes would ordinarily have off the shelf.

      Adjustability:
In my opinion is that many people just get confused with too much tech and never get properly fitted into these new drivers, Just to damned complicated. The fact of the matter is that the M1 driver is vastly easier to dial in. Each change in the T track did what I hoped it would. Lower went lower . Left to right draw vs. fade bias created the desired correction. Need lower launch I just switch the sleeve to lower loft and it was done. But this time it was very noticeable. The carbon fiber allows the weight shifts to be accentuated beyond what I have seen in the past. IT FINALLY WORKS as advertised. Very predictable. Back in the day the R7 you could play around for weeks until you got it where you wanted it. It takes minutes to figure this out not days or weeks or months. So if you think this is anything near those R1, R-11, R7, R-15, R-9 deep face drivers you are mistaken. DO YOUR HOMEWORK you will be pleasantly surprised

For those of you who prefer a higher launching Club then the FujiKura Pro60 or Kuro KageTiNi 60 will be a better choice. Then again there are 25 custom shaft options at no upcharge. Everything you need to know about each shaft is the TaylorMade custom tab under the M1 driver section.
Folks this is not an impulse buy! Good luck

Taylormade markets to the clowns that try to buy the game. The ye ol’ $3,000 set of clubs with a $0.10 swing.
Same type of players that purchase all of the practice gimmicks.
Bender balls, swing sleeves, momentus hinge clubs, and the 144 degree angle thingy. Dumb dumbs.

Slow it down Taylormade. Just think how amazing your drivers COULD be if you spent more time in the lab.
P.s. White is getting old. Black is perfectly acceptable.

The longest driver I ever had was a Cleveland Comp. I’m still hitting a R5 Dual TP with 83g diamana X flex from ten years ago, because I haven’t found anything as consistent yet. I can gain 15-20 with some of the new drivers, but im already hitting wedges into my home course, so the short grass means more to me. Pick your poison

I guess the M1 name is official. Just noticed Dustin Johnson’s Taylormade hat has the “M” blacked out. You’ll notice on TV that it looks like his hat says Taylor_ade. Sean O’Hare’s hat has the same thing. I didn’t get a chance to see Day’s hat.

Admittedly i’m a fan of TM. Yes, they went through a phase of what felt like weekly new driver releases. They’ve slowed down for sure. How many new drivers have Callaway released this year already? 2 version of the double black diamond so far? M1 looks sweet but will stick with my R15 for now.

But they don’t have to play the newest equipment. They just have to show the newest head cover.
Spieth was playing the 910 when the 913 was out, just had the 913 cover on his driver.
Justin Rose still plays the tour preferred MB irons. Rsi’s are their newest sticks.

if this is the driver… – don’t like the head shape
During Morning Drive interview, they asked Rickie what was the most important factor in putting a new club in his bag. #1 how the club looks, #2 how it performs… (The cobra LTD looks much nicer)
probably because according to the article on center of gravity you can only move it around within an area the size of a micro sd card… segway… if they do add a chip to the driver that would be interesting… on the golf range… imagine the people who break out their phones after every drive on the course…
People don’t realize pros are getting stronger and fitter and club fitting (best shaft, launch angle, spin) is getting better. Maybe the club head isn’t that important…

What I get from the commercial is,there’s a guy at the tee box on a par 4 with a brand new M1 and he tells the ground keeper , ” go ahead sir ,keep filling divot holes, don’t worry about me,because this new driver is guarantee to reach every par 4s”.
The ground keeper ,knowing he’s safe in the middle of the fairway, keeps doing his work.A few seconds later he hears the shot, looks back and then looks at the green to see if the ball lands near the green, which is the “unexpected”,then just as he “expected”,no ball near the green.
At the end of the commercial with a gentle smile the ground keeper thought was
” I knew he would sliced it 17 more yards in the woods”.
