FIRST LOOK! – Taylormade Stingray Putter

The “Ghost” club or white paint job…is a love or hate type of relationship with most golfers.  And many would agree that if any company other then Taylormade had launched this type of product (or paint job) they would have failed dismally.

But like we have expressed before much of a products success is due to the “Pyramid of Influence“.  Basically a products success starts with the “tour” players and trickles down from there.  So if you have enough money to have multiple players on tour bag your new stick…more then likely that product will sell fairly well.  NO MATTER WHAT COLOR YOU PAINT IT.  In fact the old saying in golf club design went “If it doesn’t sell…paint it a different color.”

So with that being said Taylormade looks to be launching a new “ghost” putter to their line-up and this one is called the Taylormade Stingray Putter.  It popped up on eBay just the other day.  Wonder if the original Stingray designer sold the rights to the name ;)

So…what I want to know from the readers is this:

  • 1. Do you like the new Taylormade Stingray putter?
  • 2. If this putter had the name Wilson engraved on the bottom would you pay it any attention?

Let us know what you think!

Taylor Made White seems to be currently RIGHT –

I think balance, feel and other design characteristics are key to “better putting” which is why someone would reasonably buy a new putter – therefore, White may not be Right! (Maybe there should be a palette of colors for the club maven and fanatic – begging the question that White may be/not be Right after all!)

Of course, impulse buying is many times how Pro Shops stay in business – relying on their “Display and Marketing Consultants” to provide irresistable collections of clubs, apparel and other golfing paraphernalia that the latest guru recommends – based on his/her well paid for expertise and “On-line MA or Ph.D” supporting his/her Golf Digest “recommendations.”

Good point about the Wilson name. The Stingray looks a little like the Wilson Vizor putter which has a very good feel and rolls the ball exceptionally well……however because Wilson is battling hard to regain it’s reputation the Vizor doesn’t sell nearly as well as it probably would if it had a Taylor Made or Odyssey name stamped on it.

So, I guess the new strategy for TM is to paint it white then sell it. I guess if people buy it, they why not. I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but I did hit the R11 and found the white distracting in sunlight. It almost glows. So, I can understand some white to help frame the ball, but the whole damn thing is going to burnout some retinas.

Does anyone know the design specifications for this putter, the Stingray? What is the balance bias? What is the head weight? What is the insert made of? Is the head stainless steel? Etc.

Wow i like the back and forth but really BLU do you have to try and hijack a tread to promote the manufacture that you are in bed with. The STING RAY Looks good to me but it would look good even if TM didnt make it. But heres the deal the scalloped sole does nothing and that is the design.
The design of a driver sole is advertising space for the OEM on the PGA tour hence the wold coloring over the past few years. Now the putter sole not so much. And the TECHNOLOGY that is launching the TMaG BRAND to the head of the line this year is the “COLOR WHITE”, WOW (sarcasm). Whats next for TMaG Purified air injected during the clubhead making procedure? TM PURE WHITE CLUBS. The longer shaft in TM is the only reason the testing shows any amount of added distance to the DESIGN. I currently play a TM burner superfastwith a custom fit shaft and its not the mile long shaft that was OE. Its just under 44.75 and its still works and its not even white. I think im losing 20 yards. BLU dont quit your day job TM eeds you.

I agree everthing that goes UP must evetually come down. I would rather come down from a market share of 62% than say 15%.

Titleist brought their own peril on by LOUSY MANGEMENT. LAW SUITS came from bad decisions. Like STEALING BRIDGESTONE ball compound. Just a $5 billion dollar bad decision. That MSG is a lousy business plan. Stealing gets nobody anywhere.. Future brands got tired of all the lawsuits that Titleist caused itself. Another ban mangement – bad business plan. MSG maybe that is what you call a great business plan. I can it FAILURE looking for a spot to happen. It did at Titleist. You can yuk it up when Taylor has their great fall..until.. join the flow. I knopw you have a big read hard on for TM.. but a good journalist doesn’t let his biased ass over load his brain

Just what long term plan did Titleist have that was so great MSG.. please do explain this great plan they had? Just what company has this great plan? just what is your great business plan for taking a company chapter 7 -11 0r 13 MSG. I say TM has the right stuff.. you have a job censoring a half assed blog? lolololololol

TM is the top dog. until somebody replaces them.. and their model is the right model until proven otherwise. So far you have been wrong.. dead wrong.. I won’t make your words either. I prefer making money.. not losing money

I agree TM right now is top dog…never claimed they weren’t. All I have said is their business model is not substainable.

But I would like to see where you have ever seen Fortune Brands state they are tired of dealing with lawsuits. Patent litigation is so common in the golf industry now that it is not only expected they actually set a side yearly expense %’s for it. It happens with every large golf company. Not taking Titleist side on any of their legal issues. But the facts are the facts. Every god damn one of these golf companies has stolen something from one of their competitiors.

Also I have no biases towards TM, Titleist, or any other company…I think that is quite evident by us still after all the BS TM has said and done we STILL offer them ample opportunities to be a part of what we do. I also think it is quite evident by us being the ONLY and I mean ONLY large golf site that actually does not except any ad dollars from ANY large golf company.

Now you go ask GolfWRX, TheHackersParadise, TheSandTrap, GolfDigest, etc or any other large golf forum/blog/magazine if they have are willing to leave all that money on the table in exchange for having their credibility back. Every single one of them suck from the power teet of golf OEM’s…and it effects every single word they write.

So you can continue to be a part of those corporate run affiliations if you would like. However I started this site for exactly the opposite reasons. Take it or leave it.

Well Said, exactly why I read this blog, good unbiased info here. The golf industry is notorious for handing out “free” stuff to get biased opinions from writers and bloggers. Doesn’t Nike’s secon coming of golf viral campaign show that. Don’t get me wrong, I think I am converting to nike golf based on that campaign, but it is a fact that many other entities involved with any golf company are motivated by money over integrity.

Well said and well done MYGolfSpy.

Hmmm… BLU sounds to me like a TMaG employee. So you like selling gimmicks over real game improvement? I know, I know… it’s about making the SHAREHOLDERS happy, not the golfers. People are catching on to the gimmicks. It’s just a matter or time before TMaG’s downfall starts. Maybe Earl’s House of Sports can snatch them up when the time comes.

I see why there are so many lousy golfers in the world. The posting here remove all doubt. I hate the putter because Taylor makes it. Makes a lot of since. I hate the color even though it works. I mean what does Dave Stockton know? I do agree looks are major part of liking or disliking a product.. but plain out right biasedness is ridiculous of the maker. I use whatever preforms the best. If that happened to be a Adams. I would play it. If Callaway I would play. I always thought LOW SCORE WON!!!

NEWS FLASH.. lots of inside industry BUZZZZZZZZ..
Titleist is going to be soon owned by Adidas(look for the anouncement very very soon) Nike has an outside chance(very outside)

WOW what a bombshell this would be. Both want the ball patents.. FJ could be intigrated in the shoe line easily.. The golf clubs get spun off to Golfsmith. the graveyard of iconic golf brands(MacGregor) I say good ridence to the worst run golf company on the planet. Hey golfspy.. what about the great business model you were chirping about a year and a half ago. Seems Taylor has the business model of sucess and Titleist had one that failed and Callaway is next big one that will have problems! You need some ears in the board rooms MGS.. who cares about pics.. lets get to the juicy stuff in the golf industry

LOL…Titleist being sold off has nothing to do with how the company is run. Fortune Brands has been pretty vocal about their lack of interest in remaining in the golf business. This is because the lack of growth the industry has seen and they predict will be seen in the years to come. So they want out. Titleist has no say in being dealt. But if you look at the numbers and know the individuals involved in this industry most will tell you that Titleist is one of the best managed golf companies in the business.

Just because Taylormade is growing in sales does not mean they will sustain this growth over the long haul…and I predict they will not…something Titleist has done for many many years…just at a slower and steadier pace. Titleist wants nothing to do with the business model Taylormade currently incorporates. When you look back at the history of long term viable business models…oversaturation is not one that sticks around for centuries. Taylormade got an influx of money and they did what they thought was best. But mark my words…it will not last.

Besides, the “a” in TMaG stands for adidas, who owns the company… what does Nike Light know? Not a great comparison, I know, but I’ve always wanted to use that (“Nike Lite” is also acceptable).

Regardless, Titleist has been around the block. They formed in ’32; TMaG, ’79. That sustained viability is something to be commended. TMaG sells their products with gimmicks- the only feature I’ve seen that made any sense is the exchangable face. Weights, lie/loft-changing adaptors, that bumper thing, white paint, clubs that are too d@mn long for the average golfer*- all can be taken care of with a proper fitting. And people want to pay through the nose so they can tinker? It does say something about the lemmings in todays society, though…

      * I don’t care how much a club weighs, or what it’s swing weight is… if a person doesn’t have the hand-eye coordination (like the majority of amateur golfers) to make it work, it won’t work. Look at the PGA Tour: Tiger was a driving BEAST in 2000, gaming a 43″, steel-shafted driver. He’s switched to a 44.5″ model. The Tour average is 44.75″ (44.5″ or 45″, depending on who you ask, so I’m going with the average). If the top 1% of ALL golfers don’t think they can handle a 45.5″+ driver, what gives us mere mortals hope, or the OEMs the audacity to sell them? It’s about making money- not actually helping us get better.
