A Little Background

First and foremost, we want to begin this article with a little background. TaylorMade used to be a company that gave their clubs a shelf-life of around 2 years, similar to most manufacturers. Sometimes it might be a year-and-a-half, but for the most part, it was two years between major club releases. This gave golf retailers around the nation the opportunity to keep prices normal on all TaylorMade products, and then, before the launch of a new product, could lower prices, or even do deals on pre-owned (trade-in) clubs.

Fast Forward To The Present

Fast forward a bit to now. As you probably know if you frequent this site, TaylorMade is now releasing clubs at a feverish pace. What used to be a 2 year life-cycle has very quickly been replaced by clubs that are changed out and updated every 5 months. We had a poll up for awhile here that asked how you all felt about how frequently they were launching new products and not surprisingly, 81% of you believed it is far too often. The product life cycle of TaylorMade clubs doesn’t just affect you and your opinion of the company, it also affects golf retailers.

TaylormadeGolfPreOwned.com Launched

Just how bad it effects the retailers was up for debate recently, but TaylorMade’s news today could prove to be extremely damaging. This is because TaylorMade has just launched a new website, TaylormadeGolfPreOwned.com. So what, you might be asking? Here’s the so what: When TaylorMade inevitably releases a new product 5 months after the launch of a previous product, golf retailers that have stocked up on these clubs, are loaded down with extra stock they purchased at a higher price, and are instantly forced to lower the price on the previous model to make room for the newest model. With the launch of this website, however, people can now buy older modeled TaylorMade products directly from TaylorMade, cutting out the golf retailers.

Speak Up…And Be Heard!

TaylorMade is not the only golf company to jump on the “pre-owned website” bandwagon as Callaway has joined the fray too. They are still out of our crosshairs though, as their products maintain a healthy product life and allow their retailers to not absolutely lose their shirts over deals.

What are your thoughts on this? 81% of you already were upset enough with TaylorMade and their frequent product launches to discourage you from patronizing them, so tell us how you feel about there new site?

My name is Adam Beach. This place, this site, it’s more than just a business to me, it truly is an expression of who I am and what I believe in, down to my core. I feel the work I do is a reflection of who I am and the idea behind the work I do is more important than the work itself. You see, I don’t actually see myself in the golf business at all, I am in the business of caring. I am a guy who wakes up with one goal: do the right thing.

You seem to dislike Taylormade, whatever, that’s your opinion.

The market will punish or reward them on their product strategy.

Most of the golf stores around me (in Baltimore/ DC area) do not sell used gear so I’m not sure what the fuss is all about. The best deals are on ebay….

The one thing that Taylormade or Callaway used gear sites have going for them is that your assured you’re not buying counterfeit clubs, this is a big plus.

All companies have to distinguish themselves to the target consumer, this is true whether it’s a manufacturer, a store front merchant or pro shop.

We are not your typical news site…99.9% of golf news sites and news sites in general simply PUMP UP every single thing that comes across the wire….that will never be MYGOLFSPY. We are hear to speak our minds about our experience in the industry.

And this actually has nothing to do with whether we like TaylorMade or not. It has to do with in our opinion what will end with a failed business model which will hurt both the retail market and the end user.

I don’t dislike Taylor Made other than the fact that I cannot hit them as well as other manufacturers. In Texas, almost every golf shop that is not located on a golf course sells used equipment. This includes the major chains, such as, Golfsmith, GolfGalaxy and Edwin Watts. They almost all have a trade-in program. You are correct that you can be taken by purchasing used and some new items on ebay. I purchased a new Callaway driver on ebay that turned-out to be made in China. However, Callaway did accept the serial number and officially registered it with their warrenty coverage. I get the feeling that some enterprising young employee over there made himself a few extra bucks on the side. Generally, I have been happy with the ebay products, but it can be difficult to tell exactly what you are getting.

There prices are ridiculous though, 10 min on google and you can beat there prices with brand new sticks on closeout. They’ve put themselves into a corner by releasing some many models. y the time they get them onto there preowned site other retailers are still trying to blow them out the door cheaper brand new

There is an interesting problem here. A good and bad side. If Taylor Made can actually produce a product that is technologically different every five months, then that is probably a good thing since it brings new technology to the market. If the new products are mostly cosmetic changes, then they will destroy their own business. I do not know enough about their products to make that judgement. Most individuals cannot afford to pay $400 every six months for a new driver even if that wanted to. In most cases, their spouses will not let them. TaylorMade will either be forced to lower the price to sell two or more drivers per year per golfer or deal directly with the consumer and eliminate the middle man mark-up, the pro-shop.
