The Most Underrated Golf Ball of 2024

Q: What do you think is the most underrated golf ball?

It would definitely be Maxfli golf balls. That’s an interesting thing.

So Dick’s Sporting Goods actually makes Maxfli golf balls. It’s a house brand. And over the years, house brands haven’t been that great. But in this case, Maxfli is as good as almost any ball you’ll buy, and it’s under 40 dollars.

I mean, Maxfli was super popular back in the day. They came back out under Dick’s Sporting Goods. No one really heard of them and took them serious. But when we did our golf ball robot test, it got our attention for sure.

And then when we brought it back to the ball lab for quality control, not only is it one of the best performing balls, it’s also some of the highest quality control balls.

I think out of our top 10, Titleist makes up 70 percent of those. And Maxfli is one of the only other balls in that top 10, which is pretty phenomenal for a brand you can buy at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

You can shop Maxfli Tour golf balls now at Golf Galaxy or DSG.

Tried the Tour X this year and they have become my favorite ball. These and the Vice Pro Plus are the best options compared to ProV1x and Chrome Tour X. Wedges and putting feel are the biggest factor in my ball choices. MaxFli also seem better at taking a beating and unless I hit a cart path, they are good to go.

I am just going to have to buy a dozen because I have never found one, outside of an old waterlogged Maxfli Distance ball.

Maybe they’re not popular where I play. I find just about everything else.

I have played the Maxfli tour and tour x. Good balls. HOWEVER, the SNELL golf ball is in my opinion a better golf ball and is listed at the same price level. Try the Snell, Dean Snell makes the best balls on the market. Spin much better than the Maxfli around the green, just as long and now are much more durable.

I’ve tried just about every ball from the Pro V1 to the Kirkland, and I’ve concluded that the difference in performance does not justify the difference in prices. I’m a 6 handicap, and I’ve had just as many low rounds with the Kirkland balls as with the Pro V1s. I like the premium balls much better, but not 4 X the price better. There are some great deals today on Amazon (thanks to MGS for the email!) and I’m going to jump on them.

My buds and I have been playing this ball the last 2 years. It is money !!!!!!! As a matter of fact the last dozen of ProVs i purchased was about 2 years ago. Dicks has great deal like the cube.. which is a 48 pack for $112.00 UNBEATABLE !!!!!! If you dont want to jump in the deep end just grab a dozen to try out. If you play in Corpus Christi and see me i will give you a couple to try. This ball will not let you down!!!!!!!!

I worked at DSG as a golf club tech (clubfitter) when they first acquired Maxfli. They gave me a sleeve of each new ball (circa 2014) to try out. Shot 75 first time out with their tour ball. I was a 4 then. It performed well. I’m a 0.2 now and slightly curious if this lower cost tour ball would give me what I want for performance. I’ve been looking for lower cost alternatives. I’ve been playing the Srizon z Star XV ball lately because of great deals on it. I prefer Titleist, but even though EVERY other piece of my equipment is Titleist, the ball has priced me out of their brand.

The MGS staff can give me all the grief they want but for a 10/15 HDCP and up any Tour quality ball will work. That the Maxi is at a good price point is a bonus. i will admit the only Maxflis I have played have been found ones. I have played those that look good and they play as well as anything else. I am old (don’t ask) and at my last driver fitting less than a year ago my swing speed was low 90’s. If you can tell the difference between a 2021 and a 2023 Pro V1 without looking at the side marking good for you. Now don’t get me started on fast food hamburgers.

I’ve been playing them for about 2 months. I really like them and prefer them to brand new Calloways and srixons I find. My favorite ball is the Pro V1 left dash but for the price difference am perfectly happy to play this ball.

The Maxfli is a good choice but frankly so are a number of others. Once you get decent, a urethane cover is a must. I play a number of different balls but they all have urethane covers and I don’t notice the difference. Also don’t play too firm a ball if you don’t have a really fast driver swing speed. Follow those 2 rules and there are lots of options for you, including the Maxfli.

It’s a very good ball, but I would not say it’s underrated. MGS has been highlighting its price/performance for at least the last several years. Said another way, the cat is out of the bag as it’s no longer a well-kept secret.

I found one xs tour while I was looking for one of mine, it was old with lines drawn all over it.
It was the best two rounds of golf I have ever played,I threw it away because it was getting scuffed up pretty bad.
I thought I was just luck.
Now after reading your report about it, I totally agree it is indeed a great ball.

Been playing the Maxfli tour for several years and find them to be an incredible bargain. I’m a 14 handicap and I like the prov1 slightly better, but not enough to justify the price. One time the titleist rep was down doing ball fitting and asked me what I played. I told her that for tournaments I played the prov1, but for every day use Kirkland, because you know Costco is the number 1 name in golf. The look on her face was priceless.

Another advocate here for the Maxfli tour balls. Not a bad thing to say about them. But because I like to explore options, I tried out the Wilson Triad for a couple of rounds, and I like them just as much if not more. At $34.99 / dozen they’re a great value. I’d recommend giving them a shot.

I have used maxfli tours since reading about them on MGS. I still use ProV1’s. My plan is I get the 48 pack of Maxfli’s in September to minimize the pain of losing a ball in leaves. Titleist usually runs some type of ProV special on multiple dozens in spring. I’m an 8.9, and don’t notice drop-off when I switch, but know there is slight advantage to titleist, and want all the help I can get / willing to pay difference during the spring/summer.

Been playing the Tour and Tour S for the last year and they are great, especially for the price at GG. I also did the salt water balance test on 2-dozen Maxfli and 2-dozen TP5x…Not a single Maxfli was out of balance. HALF the Taylormades were off balance.

Found the same. TM hangs their hat on being the only 5 piece ball but it’s much harder to maintain concentricity with 5 layers than 3. Stop using TP5’s 3 years ago when I did the salt water test. It’s hard enough hitting a ball straight when the are in balance let alone when “lopsided”.

I love the Maxfli Tour balls and have been using them for several years now. I’m surprised I never find any at my golf club. I see a lot of people using Vice and I like those too, but I find the Maxfli just as good and a bit less expensive even if you only buy 2 or 4 dozen. The Tour X is a bit firm feeling now, but so is the ProV1x. Both balls work well for me and so does the softer Tour. I have not tried the Tour S yet, but if it’s like the TM Tour Response I might like that too.

I kept trying out the TourX. If I buy 4 dozen they are half the price of ProV1x. I am a single digit index. They fly as high, stop as quickly, are equally as durable. I’ve switched.

I can’t imagine using a different ball. As a ~16 handicap there is zero reason I should spend $5/ball for better performance. These balls are consistently consistent. Thanks MGS for turning my head this direction. And thanks Dicks sporting good for putting these things on sale consistently.

Love the Maxfi Tour and Tour S balls. Tour X just feels to hard for me. I’d love to play the ProV1 but the price tag is just not justifiable. This ball is closest thing to ProV1 at a savings that is not a small amount.

Realistically, it’s the factory that makes the balls that really matters. Taiwan’s Foremost factory is the best outside of the USA and that is where the Maxfli Tours are made. The Korean factory that made the first Kirklands is excellent as well but then Kirklands were made in China for a year and now Vietnam (which isn’t too bad.)

Switched to Maxfli TourX last year after playing Titleist Pro V1x for years. I may feel a little more inconsistent in shot length but the Maxflis noticeably tighter in the overall dispersion department. Let’s be real here. I’m a mid 80’s player whose not joining the PGA Tour anytime soon. At half the price (4 pack) of the Titleist Pro V1x, it’s a great deal.

played the the Maxfli DDH-HT balata in the early to mid 90’s. It was so much better in the wind than the Titleist Tour balata back in those days. Have played the Pro V1 for many years now, may have to look into this new Maxfli just for beating around rounds and practice.

I have played Pro V1’s for years. I’ve dabbled with a few other balls comparable to Pro V1’s, but never changed. I just bought the Maxfli Tour yellow balls. I am a 14 handicap, going up, as I will be 70 in a week. But, my first 2 rounds I shot 77 both times, and as added excitement, I just got my second hole-in-one on a 165yd par 3.
Is it a fluke, I don’t know, but I am liking the ball so far. It is comparable to the Pro V1 in distance, spin and check into the greens with a good feel off the putter face. The finish seems to be durable with only slight blemish off of a rock.
The best thing is, I bought 2 dozen for $64.95 + tax with free shipping.
I am going to keep playing them for now!

Very good deal (4 dozen for $100) and results.
Low spinning to keep drives in play.
Enough spin to stop approach shots on the green and decent feel for short game.

It is durable enough for most players (who lose at least one ball a round).

They also come in both white and yellow.

I’ve tried both Tour X and Tour balls. I think I prefer Tour X.

Great golf balls, until you try to play with one for more than 3 holes and see the finished, chipped all over … to say nothing on the discoloration.

I’ve now tried them 3 times over the last 2 years, always with the same result.

Agreed. I find them to be almost as durable as a ProV1 / V1x…I’ve found balls I know I lost last year (because of my markings), and the ball itself cleans up and plays just as well as new ones. Are they JUST as good as a ProV1 / V1x? Maybe / maybe not, but my 2 lowest rounds of the year were shot w/ a Maxfli Tour X as my primary ball that was used throughout the round.

I disagree, durability is great on at least the TourX. I have brand new MG4 wedges and they dont seem to have any more impact on the Tour X cover than they did on the Pro V1x I played prior. I actually think they are more durable than the Pro V1x. If I manage not the lose one or come down on a cartpath hard, the ball still looks playable for another 18.
