Top U.S. Golf Courses By Region – Midwest

Top U.S. Golf Courses by Region

Fundamentally, ranking golf courses is a subjective exercise. Better players often prefer more challenging layouts. Less skilled golfers might appreciate wider fairways with fewer forced carries.

That said, the validity of any individual review isn’t tied to whether that golfer has a degree in golf course architecture or a preference for certain types of grasses.

If you’re a golfer, your opinion matters.

To build our list of the best golf destinations, we turned to TheGrint and to real golfers just like you.

ABOUT THEGRINT’S RANKINGS

To generate our rankings, we leveraged data from TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat-tracking service that also allows golfers to rate the courses they play. Think of it as something similar to Yelp for golf courses.

Here are the pertinent details:

  • Ranking derived from more than 300,000 golf course reviews from golfers just like you.
  • Only reviews from the previous year (2020) are used.
  • Only considered courses with a minimum of 50 reviews.
  • Golfers considered course conditions and overall experience as ranking criteria.

Based on reader feedback, we took the data for all courses in the United States and broke it down by region. Over the next several weeks, we’ll work our way from the Pacific Coast Highway to the Eastern Seaboard.

Nothing in the Chicago area? The Glen Club, Mistwood, Cantigny and Stonewall Orchard are all outstanding. Yes, Dubsdread is over rated after the last renovation. And Ravisloe, the old Donald Ross course in the south suburbs is a personal favorite.

Pfau in Bloomington is going to get a major tournament played on it in the future. Put that on your radar. Incredible course that opened last year.

I don’t envy the list maker here. Tough job that no one will agree with. Surprising that no love for Ohio on here. The new American Dunes in Michigan will be on here after it gets more play. Forest Dunes? Bay Harbor? The Loop? This is a great list but mine would look different.

TPC Deere Run is a really nice course, but 10 miles across the Mississippi is a much better layout, the Davenport Country Club.

I live in the back yard of TPC Deere Run. Locals can play there for $55 in the afternoon and can have membership with cart for $1900…crazy deal for a TPC course. It’s fun.

Hmm. I guess the really great courses in the Midwest like Chicago G.C., Victoria National, Crooked Stick, and Canyata are not on here because they are private and don’t have 50 reviews by the service you are using.

Please add the states these top courses are in. Otherwise the over-whelming majority of people have no idea where the courses are located.

      Thank you

Well Dean, I bet google would tell them. Or they could use the interactive map at the top of the page, and zoom in to get street addresses for each one. For those too lazy to do either,
they are in order from 10 -1, MN, MN, IND, IL, MI, WI, MN, WI , WI, WI, WI, WI.

Interesting that 2 courses that have held PGA and LPGA tournaments, including a Major, didn’t make the list. Crooked Stick in Carmel, In and The Brickyard Crossing GC at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Friends of mine have played the Boilermaker course. It’s definitely deserving of being on the list. Hoping to play it soon

Crooked Stick is private and quite exclusive. I’d put the Pete Dye course in French Lick above anything in Indiana, personally.

Agreed, think of all the courses that didn’t make it, French Lick, Classic at Maddens, Forest Dunes and Loops, Sentry World, Lawsonia,, Bay Harbor and a couple other top 100 courses that didn’t make the list. Dubs is up there but it becomes sort of a toss up given this list. 3 of the courses on this list are not on the top 100 so there is room for change in theory but its a solid list. Better then the west and southwest versions of this list. These are tough to argue IMO besides Boilermaker but its a great course too.

Why did they build all the good courses east of The Dells? The FIB’s will only drive so far probably.

Love seeing Purdue getting some love. Going to school there and being able to play at a reduced rate was awesome. Kampen is still the toughest/best course I have ever played. Ackerman Allen is a great course in its own right also.

No Links at Lawsonia? Not much of a list. . .

I agree whole heartedly that with links of lawsonia being a very good and a pleasure to play. And if I were doing my personal wisconsin rankings it would be ahead of Erin hills and the the group in Kohler. (And doesn’t cost a mortgage payment to play) but these are just online reviews and I tend to see people rave about Erin hills and the straits course after playing them not entirely cuz they liked them but almost as a brag that they went out to play them. So I think famous big name destination courses will almost always be higher on a list based on online reviews than gems like lawsonia
